Jacksonville fans alienated from team

We know that even the drunk white fans are finally beginning tobe turned offby the endless epidemic of serious crimes being committed by black football players.

Another possible hopeful sign is that the Jaguars are having a difficult time selling tickets despite showing improvement in the Del Rio coaching era with two winning seasons out of three including a 12-4 mark in '05 followed by a one and out in the playoffs.

The team hadveryloud and loyal support when Tom Coughlin ran the team. Coughlin's teams, which routinely had 9 and 10 white starters, were phenomenally successful efforts for an expansion franchisethat nearly made it to the Super Bowl in just its third season of existence.

When theJaguars fellto mediocre status after a few seasons as a top AFC contender, Coughlin moved on anda young master of Caste System politics took over named Jack Del Rio. Despite Del Rio's impressive turnaround of the team, the city doesn't have the same passion for theJaguars that it did before. What other reason for this could there be than the fans are not in tune with the organization's seeming determination to employthe blackest team in NFL historyon a yearly basis. Can it be that the fair-minded white sports fans wholove to root for black athletes and even teams that are predominantly black, change once a team becomes (minus the kickers and long snapper) in the area of 90 percent Negro with only a rare white or two visible on the field of play during games, that a tipping point is reached wherebymany white fans become turned off or at best tepid supporters of the team?

The answer would appear to be yes, especially when none of the few whites are stars. Only Matt Jones has the potential to be a star, but working in an overwhelmingly hip hop environment with four black quarterbacks, three of whom throw poorly with only Byron Leftwich occasionally able to muster some streaks of accuracy, it will be nearly miraculous if Jones can thrive in such a situation. Further, the Jags are reminiscent of the coal black Saints under Jim Haslet -- the Saintshad some definite offensive talent but rarely could put it together, especially in important games and important individual drives. They were the least disciplined team and the one that regularly choked under the "leadership" of Aaron Brooks.

NFL teamsmodeled almost exclusively after the demographics of Grambling and Howard are doomed to failure, and they also turn off their home fans, who expect at least some whites on the home team to root for.

From Draft Daddy:

Not too long ago the Jacksonville Jaguars were insanely popular in Northern Florida, but these days they are struggling to fill the seats at an already significantly downsized Municipal Stadium.

DD.Comment: The Jaguars are suddenly so cold in the city of Jacksonville that the ownership can't even sell the naming rights to Municipal Stadium, now that Alltel's lowpaying deal (by N.F.L. standards) has expired.

interesting article don. i remember back in the 90's when the Jags became an expansion team they had some whites on the D- line. not anymore. heck they were even interesting to watch then because of Mark Brunell. He could scramble well back then and gain yards with his feet. not anymore.

Don,

This is quite interesting because of the avvid support of coal black SEC teams in the south. After experiencing an Alabama game , I realized this is more than cheering on individual players or even the team that particular year, but it represented more of a cultural/historical identity of an area and people over generations. In other words, the fans WERE "family" and the team(Alabama in this case) was ONLY the medium that started the "family" conversation!

What really consolidated this for me was the silence when Bear Bryant's recorded voice came over the loadspeaker to start the game and hush that went over the previously delirious crowd.

Back to your original point, the caste system shouldn't expect such devout loyalty as it seems to enjoy in college because of the glaring differences in player behaviour-most notably the millionaire status of pro players which causes them to be viewed as greedy narcissists.

It is interesting you mention this because my local team , MN Vikings, is not going to sell out for first time in 79 games!(something like 10 years) There is going to be a blackout on opening day!! Hmmmm, I wonder if they want to rethink Tavaris Jackson as the "leader" of the franchise. I think whites are slowly but surely waking up.

I think Jacksonville will end up moving to Los Angeles. The league never wanted a team and Jacksonville to begin with and the only reason they got one was because the other cities in the running seriously botched their bids. I say good riddance!

as long as Shack Harris will never work in NFL again, i'd be more than happy to see them fold!

i am not a big fan of Del Rio, either.

I was just looking at the 1998 Jaguars roster, and they had over 20 white players that year. Brunell and two white backups at QB, an almost all-white o-line (including Tony Boselli who would have been a Hall of Famer except for the injury problems that prematurely ended his career), Pete Mitchell at TE, and a bunch of white defensive players -- NT John Jurkovic, DE Jeff Lageman, DE Joel Smeenge, DT Seth Payne (still in the league), LB Brant Boyer, LB Jeff Kopp, LB Bryan Schwartz, LB Tom McManus, LB Bryce Paup (who was a terror with the Packers), LB Erik Storz, and S Blaine McElmurry.

With the Giants, Coughlin still has white QBs and o-linemen, but has gone the all-black route on defense, a trend that started when he was still with Jacksonville.Edited by: Don Wassall

Don, if I recall correctly there were several white starters on the defensive line. Also they averaged more white starters on defense than many other teams. This was the past however. Things are terrible now. Leftwich is a poor example of a quarterback. I am sure Couch could do a better job.

I heard someone on ESPN the other day bemoaning the lack of decent QBs in Jacksonville and how Matt Jones needs a QB who can get the ball to him on a dependable basis.

He'll probably be fired for stating the obvious. From what I've been able to see, Leftwich has quite a few critics in Jacksonville but has pretty much gotten a pass from the national media, which, as even Rush Limbaugh knows, has a vested interest in rooting on black quarterbacks and seeing them succeed. But I think Leftwich will finally be under the kind of scrutiny this season that white quarterbacks are under every game of every season.

I find it pathetically amusing how many black QBs have terrible throwing fundamentals. Leftwich is supposed to be a pure "pocket passer" yet has this slow-motion delivery that all but guarantees failure. Receivers with bad hand-eye coordination, quarterbacks who don't know how to throw, ya gotta love the Caste NFL.

I have a nephew, age 9. His favorite NFL team is Jacksonville, and he says his favorite QB is Byron Leftwich. At least Michael Vick isn't one of his sports' heroes.

Also note how they went from teal tops to all black uniforms. In fact, many teams (college and pro) have been going dark in the uniform category. I wonder if it's to blend in the uniforms with the skin underneath. The uniforms originally designed for mostly white teams are being traded in, across the board, for darker ones. (Patriots, Broncos, 49ers, Falcons, etc.)

Somehow dark uniforms = "tougher". I wonder how much this "psychological" effect is really attributable to the thuggish behaviors of some (most) members of darker ethnicities.

I have family that live in Jacksonville Beach, and I go there every so often. In my opinion, the White people in the Jacksonville area are very much into things like NASCAR (The Daytona Speedway is pretty close) and country music. Therefore, they are the kind of White people who get fed up with bad black behavior AND bad black football teams as well. That could be the reason for the poor fan attendence at home games.

The northern half of Florida is a great place. That strong Southern White spirit is still very much alive down there. Every time I go to visit my cousins down there, we go to Daytona Beach to hit the bars, and the inside of some of these places look like "NASCAR Mecca". They have the racing numbers of all the drivers on the walls and actualy stock car hoods are hung up too. People still wear lots of Confederate Flag paraphenalia around (shirts, hats, etc.) too. I can't wait to go visit again.

You are absolutely right about Northern Florida still being a place where whites are more prone to being proud of their heritage and ethnicity. I am from a small town between Gainesville and Jacksonville. My town has a festival that celebrates a Confederate victory with a parade and reenactment. Black people are also more apt to be respectable and have a better work ethic than many of their own.

Florida's white culture is said to be reverse of the rest of the country as far as geography and culture go. northerners ("yankees") go further south, while
southerners ("rednecks") go north.

Pensacola is also a very culturally "southern" Florida city. Tallahassee is the capital and a college town, so I don't know. I've only been there once.

When the heck is Jacksonville gonna crank out some good ol' bands like they did back in the day with .38 Special, Skynyrd, and The Allman Brothers. I miss that southern rock sound(I just despise country).
