Godin

From T&F News
Curtis Godin's meteoric rise as the fastestteenager in California was validated on an overcast, unusually cool Saturdayafternoon at the Southern Section track and field championships at CerritosCollege.
A former baseball player at Santa Ana MaterDei who joined the track team last year as a junior, Godin has dominated hiscompetition this season. The pressure was on to show he could deliver in hismost important races yet, and he won the Division 2 100 in a wind-aided 10.34seconds and the 200 in a season-best 20.90. Next up is the Masters Meet onFriday, then the state championships in two weeks in Clovis.
"He's the hardest worker I've seen in my20 years' coaching at Mater Dei," Coach Rick Martinez said. "We knewhe'd be good, but because of his work ethic, he's spectacular."
Godin's sudden success is unusual for thesprint scene.
"It's surprising, to say theleast," Godin said. "I'm pretty excited with what I've done so far.I'm still looking to drop my times more."8
He finished third in last year's Division 3100 final in 10.79 seconds in his first season of track. Now the UCLA-boundsenior has his sights on the state 100 record of 10.25 seconds set by HenryThomas of Hawthorne in 1985.
In the pole vault, Luigi Colella of ThousandOaks became the first high school athlete to clear 17 feet at Cerritos, settinga Division 2 record at 17-0 3/4, only to be eclipsed later in the day by a 17-1achieved by Ventura’s Jake David, though that achievement was in Division 1.
"I felt 100%, gave 100% and Iflew," he said.

This is the text of the article link I just posted.
But the link has a video that shows his race, which is quite impressive!

a few performances of note from recent days:

9th-grader Kolby Mendenhall won two Oklahoma 3A State Championships, in the 100-meters (10.89) and the 200-meters (21.92). he followed that up in the Oklahoma Meet of Champs, again taking gold in both the 100 (10.82) and the 200 (21.85), albeit with impressive black 200/400 runner Tyler Jackson (a senior) absent from the meet. he ran a 10.74 in the 100 in the semifinals.

again, he is just a freshman in high school and already is a two-time state sprint champion. his future appears very bright.

***************************

Alexa Efraimson, a junior from the state of Washington, ran the fastest EVER 1600-meters by a high school girl. she blazed to a 4:33:29!

**************************

an all-White quartet of sprinters, including two brothers, re-set their all-time state record in Oregon in the 4x100 relay, cruising to a time of 41.19.

- Mitch Horning (a two-sport athlete who we've talked about briefly before), Tyus Kuykendall, and brothers Adam and Nathan Starnes stripped nearly a quarter second from the all-time state best. for Sheldon, that's the fourth best relay time in the country outside of Texas (which has 16 of the top 20). the guys had previously broken the record at the Jesuit Relays with 41.41 this spring. Horning proved to be the state's best sprinter, as he won the 100 (10.77) and was second in the 200.

you can see a video of the race here: http://www.dyestat.com/gprofile.php...nt_id=118&year=2014&do=videos&video_id=116023

***************************

the next elite decathlete has emerged. Tennessee's Harrison Williams is a true phenom. Williams won five individual events at the 2013 Tennessee Division II state championships: the decathlon, 110 high hurdles, 300 intermediate hurdles, high jump, and pole vault.

when competing in actual multi-events, he won the prestigious Arcadia Invitational decathlon and New Balance Outdoor Nationals octathlon. he's also the #4 pole vaulter in the country.

Williams’ personal bests are 10.98 (100), 22-2 (long jump), 46-6 (shot put), 6-8 (high jump), 49.82 (400), 14.46 (110 hurdles), 115-5 (discus), 16-8 (pole vault, established last month in Reno), 144-11 (javelin), and 4:41.91 (1,500), and he is currently ranked as the #1 decathlete in the nation. he will be attending Stanford on a track scholarship.

Curtis Godin continued his undefeated 100m season today, winning the 100m at the California CIF Southern Section Master's Meet, which determines qualifiers for the State Meet.
His time was 10.55 into a strong headwind (-1.9w). That's a good time given the wind.
I watched the race live on the internet. Godin was behind in the first half of the race, but gained the lead at about 60 meters and hung on for the win.
He will be the favorite going into the State Finals.
Fingers crossed.

In the 200m, he came 2nd by 3/100ths, in 20.85 wind legal.
I think that's a personal best.

Another smoking fast youngster....
Hannah Brier of Wales, who just recently turned 16, ran 11.57 at the Welsh Championships.
She broke her own under-17, Welsh 100m record.

Garrett O'Toole, a high school senior from Maine, ran the mile yesterday in 4:01.89. that's #1 in the US and #12 all-time!

he's also got a 3:45.55 1500-meters (US #1), a 1:50.16 800-meters (US #5) and a 8:19.17 3,000-meters (US #4). he'll be running at Princeton next year.

********************************

the California CIF State Track Meet is today and tomorrow, featuring some of the best high school athletes in the country. a few items of note …

Curtis Godin (10.36) is the clear favorite in the 100-meters, though there are at least 3 other White athletes who are in the mix: junior Joey Souza (10.72), sophomore Sean McGrew (10.67), and senior Dale Stoller (10.90).

in the 200-meter, Godin is in the mix, though it's not a given as he was nipped the last time out by 3 hundredths of a second by (negro) Michael Norman. it should be an exciting race.

in the long jump, Joey Souza is amongst the nation's elite (24-feet 10-inches, US #3, CA #2), with a windy 25-7, which is the #1 all-conditions jump all-time in the US. not bad for a kid who is only 5-foot-7, 135-pounds.

Godin was the fastest qualifier for the final by more than a full tenth of a second!
Sophomore football star Sean McGrew also qualified for the final.
So 2 white boys in the California 100m final!

Godin should win it tomorrow. Fingers crossed
McGrew should win it 2 years from now. :)

Excellent news jacknyc. Hoping he wins the state title over both distances like Matt Bruno did. I also hope he breaks both of his personal best times while doing so. He is going to be fun to watch in college. I can't wait!

Just watched Godin win his heat of the 200m in 20.93.
Again, fastest qualifier!
His stride isn't as long as some of these other kids, but his turnover is fast.

Saw him in the 100m last night. He didn't qualify for the finals, but he was a bullet out of the blocks. If it was a 40 yard race, he would medal.

as a final follow-up before the Finals of tonight's CIF California State Championship Meet, the fastest boys 4x100 relay team in the prelims was Woodcreek, which has been amongst the nation's elite relay teams all year long. that's "weird," though, since two of their four 100-meter sprinters are White: Alex Rotteveel and Colton George.

also in the meet, several White athletes qualified in the boys 400-meters, and a non-black runner (Joe Herrera) is the class of the field.

i've not seen the footage, but i would guess a similar trend held true in the 4x400 relay …

best of luck to our kindred in tonight's Finals!

California has a very white showing at this year's state champs despite being a minority majority state. This means the lack of white sprinters in Florida is caused by something other than a lack of talent.

i agree completely. please read my thread "Just run, baby!" i detail the obvious in it, pointing out the absurdity that is the lack of White participation in US (especially high school) sprinting. that, in turn, causes a dearth of White sprinters at the higher levels.

******************

on another note, is there a link so i can watch the CIF Championship Meet online?

thanks, Vanilla_Sky.

Woodcreek is the team i mentioned earlier. they have two White runners on their 4x100, and their time of 41.20 is top 20 in the nation (if memory serves).

Madeline Price just took second place in the girls 400-meters with a sparkling time of 53.42 (US #4). it took the nation's fastest female 400 runner this year to beat, with an amazing 52.52.

a hat tip to Ms. Price. well done!

a slightly windy 10.31 for Godin as he wins, running away. he overcame a poor start to blow past the crowd and cruise down the final 40 meters.

edited to add: sophomore Sean McGrew finished with a very nice time of 10.68. his future is very bright.

It's only Godin's 2nd yr running track.
And he only turned to track after failing (so to speak) at baseball.
How many other talented white sprinters are undiscovered - playing soccer, baseball, video games, etc.?!
