Michigan State has taken two key steps toward securing an
impressive recruiting class. Yesterday it was tight end Charlie
Gantt of Brother Rice who selected the Spartans; today it was
linebacker Eric Gordon of Traverse City West High School.
The 6-foot-0, 220-pound Gordon camped at Michigan State
yesterday and was offered a scholarship after his strong
performance. Gordon is ranked the #5 player in Michigan for
the class of 2006 by SpartanMag.com and the #6 player in
Michigan by Rivals.com.
Gordon selected the Spartans over offers from Missouri,
Indiana and Central Michigan. He had plans to attend a few
other camps, but decided that the opportunity to play for the
team he grew up rooting for was the right choice. Gordon's
primary recruiter from Michigan State is Coach Jim McElwain.
Gordon burst on the recruiting scene earlier this spring after his
NIKE Camp performance. At the Ann Arbor NIKE, Gordon
showed speed, agility and explosiveness. His overall
performance placed him in an elite category of athletes.
Gordon runs a 4.5 forty-yard dash, benches 320-pounds and
has vertical jumped an impressive 38 inches.
Though Gordon will play linebacker at Michigan State, it is
likely his work with the defensive backs at camp that sealed the
deal for his scholarship. Gordon spent time working with the
defensive backs and showed the hips and speed needed to
blanket receivers when dropping into coverage.
Gordon's ability to support the run is already a known
commodity. His desire to step up and put a helmet on someone
is well documented in his Rivals.com video clips. Combine that
with his cover skills, and Gordon is an excellent candidate to
play the bandit linebacker position for Michigan State.
