Browsing through UFC upcoming fight nights and I see that Alexander Gustafsson is fighting Werdum at heavyweight. I do not know if this is a smart fight for Gustafsson. Even though werdum is pretty well washed up he still has heavyhands and will likely outweigh Gustafssdon by 15-20lbs. I know that Gus can stand with most as evidenced by his fight with Cormier. If he wins he beats an aged heavyweight on the downward slope of his career, if he loses then Gus will be looked at as a flash in the pan with no real future.

Thoughts?

No idea how the move up to Heavyweight will affect an already somewhat depleted Gus! Recently C level fighter Gian Vallante moved up to Heavy as well as Former Vol football OSP, both lost in fights I saw. That being said Gus is much better than those two. Heavyweight is also weak, not much depth there so if he could string together a couple of wins he'd be in the mix.

Gustafsson will have to be at the level of fighter he was when he fought Jon Jones the first fight. Werdum is on the downside of his career but still might be to much for Gustafsson. I will be pulling for Gustafsson to pull out the victory.

Gustafsson was no match for Werdum once it went to the mat. I don't where Gustafsson goes from here. Retirement maybe?

He’s fine, he looked good. He just got caught with an armbar. A flukey thing that can happen to anyone

Unfortunate result but Werdum is a stiff HW debut fight to be fair even at his age after many fights and very strong in the ground, what upside said could be true. It may not be unwise to stick around for another opponent to see if he is competitive in HW since Gus is only 33 which is not old at HW at all, depends on how Gus takes the loss.
