the return of high-flying All-American candidate, Josh Heytvelt, to the Zags line-up will be delayed another 4 to 6 weeks...

a stress fracture was found in his foot, and two screws were inserted. ouch.

This team is back and is led by top tier white talent. They've blown out their last 2 conference opponents, scoring 90+ points in each game.

After watching the pitiful Pitt-Georgetown game earlier this week, and seeing nothing but balls clanking off the rim in miserable fashion,(honestly, neither team could come close to making a 3 pointer, it was horrible to watch even one half of that game) it is quite refreshing to watch a basketball game that features balls actually going in the basket.

And again, Gonzaga's best players are white.

I agree that Heytvelt and Bouldin are their best players but Pargo(black)is pretty good too. The scouts come into look at Heytvelt but Pargo gets their attention as well.

Pargo has fallen off as the season has progressed... i don't know why, though. meanwhile, Bouldin has quietly emerged as the team leader, or so it looks on the floor.

Heytvelt is also starting to get in game shape. i just hope he's close to 100%, though he didn't play well their last time out.

the Zags have a HUGE game against all-black #1 Memphis on ESPN tomorrow.Edited by: Jimmy Chitwood

Looking forward to watching that one. Heytvelt needs to dominate defensively and offensively for the Bulldogs to have a good chance in this game. He needs to stay out of the typical "white man foul trouble" as well.

Gonzaga played VERY poorly today, yet still came within a couple of missed opportunities of beating Memphis.

the Zags looked very sluggish and intimidated. the first could be explained by the early start time, but the second is unforgiveable. Pargo began the game looking awful, but turned it on about midway through the first half and ended up being Gonzaga's best player today.

Heytvelt was solid and flashed the all-around skills that have pro scouts salivating, though he didn't dominate like he is capable of. instead, he spent most of the game floating on the perimeter... and he did pick up several cheap fouls.

Micah Downs had a solid game, but he had too many turnovers.

Bouldin and Pendergraft might as well have slept in. they played terrible, as did Gray, Day, and Kuso. all in all, an UGLY game from the Zags' standpoint.

however!

playing as poorly as they did, they still had a chance to win. and hopefully that will make them hungrier as the season ends and the postseason begins. i would like to see a re-match in the NCAA tourney with a fully healthy Heytvelt.

as i suspected, Heytvelt is still not fully recovered from his injury. although his coaches insist the break in his foot is healed, he's been dealing with a lot of swelling and pain since his return.

he might not be 100% until next season.

also in Zags news, did anyone else see Micah Downs' dunk as the #1 play on Sportscenter yesterday? it was pretty wicked.

see this video link to appreciate it.

while we primarily focus on men's athletics on these boards, i thought i'd point out that Gonzaga's ladies team has quietly had a nice year, as well.

they are currently 10-1 in conference play (19-7 overall) and have done it without a single mention on Sportscenter or a single violent/drug-related off-court incident by any of the players.

and it's a nice bonus that the talented student-athletes are also not hard to look at.

I'd forgotten Tiffany Shives played there. She was a McDonald's All-
American, but didn't work out at hometown Michigan State.

Heytvelt is a great talent. He has great leaping ability and the media even gives him his due for this. One of the few "athletic" whites guys out there.

Gonzaga is peaking at the right time...

despite an often frustrating season due to injuries (especially Heytvelt's), Gonzaga is back in the Top 25, once again won the WCC regular season championship outright, and is playing tremendous basketball. simply amazing after some of their ugly games early in the year.

Heytvelt is showing flashes of his old self, Bouldin has again resumed his all-around excellence, Downs is an almost impossible match-up when he is on the floor and getting touches, and Pendergraft should be given a lot of credit for keeping the ship afloat until the younger guys got back in the groove.

it should be said the Pargo is playing better, as well. though he's certainly not the superstar everyone makes him out to be, he isn't hogging the ball as much of late and making fewer stupid decisions. so here's hoping the Zags make a deep run in the Big Dance.

As I watch Gonzaga play, I fail to see what all the hype is regarding Pargo. He misses virtually all of the shots he takes, and is frequently out of control when handling the ball.

I can't believe this guy was the conference player of the year.

Hey, I'd love to see this team go deep into the NCAA tournament, but I think they're a year away. Heytvelt hopefully will be fully healthy and they do have that freshman Day who looks good.

We'll see.

Down with Few. I don't understand this guy. He's darkened his program by bringing in Pargo and that African who starts over Heytvelt. In the victory over Santa Clara, Few was visibly angry at Heytvelt after he made 2 threes. That's more 3 pointers than Pargo or any of the other black players make. This team is not the team that drew the nation's attention back when Dan Dickau was the team leader.

Very frustrating to watch this team lose to a virtually all black San Diego team. Heytvelt needs to transfer. He'd be a great fit at Notre Dame, with his superior explosive, athletic ability and his prowess on the boards.

To me, Mark Few is a sellout.
