Well deserved Italian defender and World cup star Fabio Cannavaro won the Golden ball for best soccer player in the world. Great athlete, great leader, great heart.

no wonder i'd never heard of another one! i only came to appreciate the beautiful game about 5 years ago.

it makes his accomplishment even more special. it's too bad so many American pundits, even many worldwide, tried to blame racism for the success of the proud white Italian team.

Chalk up another huge award for Fabio as in Fabulous. He was just named World Soccer magazine's Player of the year trouncing the competition. He is only the second defender to win the award in the mags 25 year history. The other defender wasn't too shabby either: Fellow Italian Paolo Maldini -1994.

Hat trick--FC won the FIFA Player of the year-which leaves not one ounce of doubt as to who was the best soccer player in the universe in 2006. Triple congratulations.

what an awesome prize! he is the FIRST defender to EVER win the award, to my knowledge, anyway.

what i don't understand is why Brazil won Team of the Year instead of the Italians, who came in second...
