Golovkin had an impressive amateur career. Won the 2003 World Amateur Championship in Bangkok by beating the 2007 World Champion Matvey Korobov 19-10 then Defeated Andy Lee 29-9. Knocked out current IBF supermiddle champ Lucian Bute in 4. And then defeated the Cuban Yordanis Despaigne who would go on later to defeat Jean Pascal. He caught up with that track runner Andre Dirrell and beat him 23-18 in Athens.

I've been a bit disappointed Universum hasn't kept Gennady more active this year.

An interesting fighter Sean. Good to you for posting him here. I have watched some of his fights. He has a nice, slip and roll defense and keeps his hands up. He is a hot prospect. He has that electric knockout power that so many of the top white boxers have. He is a climber and we should expect to see him in the top 10 in 2 years if he is patient. Anyone with that kind of an amateur pedigree is like a rocket taking off. I would not make too much out of his amateur wins over Pavlik and Bute though -professional fighting is a big step up.

Hot middleweight prospect Gennady Golovkin blitzed former Felix Sturm opponent Javier Alberto Mamani in the very first round of their ten round special attraction. Golovkin dominated the contest with his speed from the get-go and finally connected with huge hooks and uppercuts nearing the end of the first. He pinned Mamani in the corner, unleashing brutal shots to floor the Argentinian just before the referee decided he had seen enough and called a halt to the action. Time was 2:52 minutes. A very impressive Golovkin moves to 15-0 with 12 KOs and has a bright future ahead of him. Mamai falls to 35-8-1 and suffered the quickest loss of his career.

Golovkin will face American Tarvis Simms (24-0-1, age 37) on the Universum/Spotlight card Apr 25. Simms has appeared on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

It's good to see his promoter is finally getting him a recognizable American opponent.

I don't like seeing talent like Golovkin's go to waste.

Unbeaten middlweight contender Gennady Golovkin scored a second round TKO over Brazilian John Anderson Carvalho. Golovkin is now 17-0, 14 KOs and he has also acquired the vacant WBO Intercontinental middleweight belt. Carvalho, who was down in round two, dropped to 19-4, with 11 KOs. Golovkin is ranked #3 by the WBC/WBA and he is also the fourth-ranked boxer in the WBO rating.

In a clash for the vacant WBA middleweight title, unbeaten WBA #1 ranked Gennady Golovkin (19-0, 16 KOs) needed less than one minute to annihilate #13 Milton Nuñez (21-2-1, 19 KOs) in the first round.

For a few years now I've considered Golovkin to be probably the best middleweight, likely better than Korobov and perhaps Pirog too (although Dmitry has improved since his amateur days).

He KOed Lucian Bute in the 2003 world amateurs. He has amateur wins over Andy Lee, John Duddy, and Matvey Korobov. Golovkin defeated Andre Dirrell in the 2004 Olympics to win the silver medal at middleweight.

I was concerned Universum may have ruined him with inactivity and mediocre opposition, but he looked great last night in Panama.
