this is why I don't think footballers can be described as low 10s 100 metre runners.

Negative wind but the first three guys ran 11.10s and could be expected to break into the tens with a bit of dedication.

Note that is is football season over here so they are quite bulked, most probably over 95kgs which works against your speed but is great for powerful breakbusting runs with a football under your arm.

The winner, Lachie Turner, was given training tips by Matt Shirvington for the past week, third placegetter a day or two by Usain Bolt who is out here at the moment.
First and second are both Rugby union players, Turner plays on the wing for NSW and Australia
the race

Except for the extremely rare exception flat 11 100 meter times would be standard for 200 to 220 pound men with the kind of speed wingers or running backs or wide receivers have in the NFL. Most can have decent starts but fade late due to their bulk.

yes true.
I guess it's safe to assume anybody majoring in another sport, being fit and fast means running 11 or so. After all, most decathletes run about this time and they actually practise sprinting;
only the absolute elite are much better than that.

This is a really interesting video showing Cristiano Ronaldo - one of the fastest footballers - running a 25m sprint, and being timed against the Spanish 100m Champ, Angel Rodriguez.
Rodriguez is faster and you can clearly see his superior technique makes a big difference.
But! even though Rodriguez has faster straight line speed, in the zig-zag sprint, Ronaldo is faster. Because these short quick, change of direction movements is what he does on the soccer field.
Very interesting.
And even more interesting when you think about American football. The emphasis at these combines, is a player's 40 yd dash time (straight line speed). But how often do football players running a 40yd straight line?! On kick-offs maybe. WRs might once or twice in a game. What is really much more important is this change of direction speed that Cristiano has. But American Football coaches and the media are under the mis-guided idea that straight line speed is what counts. Just more stupidity from the American football establishment.
