I can understand you being annoyed at Australians of Croatian descent for preferring their old country...

However the impression is that these "ethnics" were really the only ones who cared about football Down Under while the Anglo-Saxon element snubbed that sport alltogether (and continues to do so, by and large). Now that the ethnics are out of the picture, the stadiums are hopelessly empty.
Even the supporters I see look mostly like emasculated left leaning "metrosexuals" for whom "soccer" is fashionable. Probably the type of "fan" Lowy and his ilk are trying to attract, now that they sent the working class the way of the dodo. We have some similar yuppie fans here in the US (Portland / Seattle come to mind).

By the way - the Australian Team that eliminated Croatia from the 2006 World Cup read almost like a random page from a Zagreb phone book - Culina, Popovic, Viduka (captain and one of the best players ever to come out of Australia IMO), Skoko, Covic, Kalac... All Croatian "traitors"...

Rebajlo, How do the English and French leagues compare in Rugby?

Europe - That depends on which version of rugby we are talking about. In the case of Rugby League (the code I referred to in my above post and the most popular "winter" sport in New South Wales and Queensland) the English competition is unquestionably far stronger. The otherwise all-English Super League actually includes one French club, Catalans Dragons (similarly, the Australian NRL includes the Auckland-based New Zealand Warriors).

In the more widely popular Rugby Union, however, things are a lot more even. If we use performances in the Heineken Cup (which may be viewed as the European rugby equivalent of the Champions League) as a yardstick, English teams have won six championships to the French teams' five, but the French have the edge in runners up poistions to the tune of nine to four.

As things go, the Irish sides Leinster and Munster have been dominant in recent seasons, winning four of the last six Heineken Cup finals...

There is no doubt that the mainstream Australian media displays a blatant anti-soccer bias, largely based on a determination to protect the primacy of the “native†sports of Aussie Rules, rugby league, rugby union, and cricket but part of which also stems from the popular notion that the sport in this country was established, developed and supported exclusively by non-Anglo-Celtic “ethnics†of Balkan / Mediterranean provenance. This, of course, isn’t completely true as soccer was always popular among English, Scottish and other northern and central European migrants.

The majority of the Australian team at the 1974 World Cup was British-born or “Anglo†Australian, especially the players who actually received game time. Peter Wilson, Ray Richards, Adrian Alston, and Peter Ollerton were born in England while Jack Reilly, Jimmy Mackay, and Jimmy Rooney were born in Scotland. Colin Curran, Johnny Warren and the aboriginal Harry Williams were Australian-born. The only non-Anglo-Celtic players to see any match time were Dragan “Doug†Utjesenovic (Serbian), Branko Buljevic (Croatian), Manfred Schaeffer (German), and Attila Abonyi (Hungarian). Looking at the entire picture, only four of the 22 man squad were of “Yugoslavian†extraction. :lightbulb:

Plenty of “ethnicâ€-based football clubs were established in Australia during the post-war migration period and - contrary to popular belief - not all of them were founded by Croatians, Serbs, Greeks, and Italians. For example, there were also Dutch, Hungarian, Polish, Czech, and German clubs but, with the passage of a relatively short period of time, these people and their children assimilated with Anglo-Celtic Australians, consequently weakening their organisations, often to the point of extinction, and thus relinquishing their visible influence on the sport.

The Greeks, Italians and “Yugoslavsâ€, however, generally took the opposite path and actively maintained “separate†identities. A clannish attachment to their clubs meant that these organisations possessed a steady stream of income and outlived their “northern†European counterparts, eventually becoming the face of top-level Australian club football.

There was, of course, an ugly side to this face. Old World hatred and rivalries, such as those between Croatians and Serbs, were transplanted to Australia, manifesting themselves in brawls between mutually antagonistic sets of supporters. Such ethnic violence did more to damage soccer’s reputation in Australia than anything else and provided a conveniently easy excuse for the media to belittle the sport. Clubs like Sydney Croatia, Melbourne Croatia, South Melbourne Hellas, Sydney Olympic, Preston Macedonia, Marconi, Brunswick Juventus, and Heidelberg Alexander became symbols of social dissonance, monuments to the worrying existence of virulently unassimilated ethnic enclaves whose allegiance to Australia was at best questionable. Australians saw people dressed in the colours of other nations, proudly waving foreign flags and rabidly singing the praises of these countries in alien tongues – all in all, a public relations disaster for the sport (and also, I may add, for the nationalities involved).

If we are talking attendance figures, Perth Glory joined the NSL in 1996 and attracted the largest and most vocal crowds in the competition, the overwhelming majority of their support being drawn from “Anglo†Australians and British ex-pats. This was due in large part to the club’s meticulously cultivated “non-ethnic†identity. In fact, the 1999/2000 grand final held at Perth’s Subiaco Oval, which the Glory lost on penalties following a 3-3 draw with the Wollongong Wolves (my now-defunct local club which, incidentally, was also “non ethnicâ€) set the all-time NSL attendance record of just over 43,000. The North Sydney-based Northern Spirit, another “non-ethnic†club which entered the NSL in 1998 also drew huge crowds by Australian standards before financial trouble set in, which caused them to fold at the end of the old competition’s final season.

Not quite true, mate. :icon_wink: The Australian team which played Croatia in the 2006 finals started three “Croatian-Australiansâ€, viz.: Mark Viduka, Jason Culina, and goalkeeper Zeljko “Spider†Kalac (who’s characteristically bumbling error gifted Croatia their second goal). The other “non-Anglo†starters were “Macedonian-Australian†Mile Sterjovski, “Italian-Australian†Vince Grella, and the half-Samoan Tim Cahill. The remaining five players were Harry Kewell, Scott Chipperfield, Craig Moore, Brett Emerton, and Lucas Neill.

If You wish to employ the phrase “Croatian traitorsâ€, how about raising the case of Josip Simunic, Croatia’s centre back in the abovementioned match? The Canberra-born Simunic was the beneficiary of a taxpayer-funded soccer scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport, yet showed his gratitude by opting to represent Croatia.

But wait, there’s more, for the Croatian squad contained an additional two so-called “Croatian-Australiansâ€: Geelong-born reserve goalkeeper Joey Didulica and Sydney-born defender Anthony Seric, the latter having also benefitted from a taxpayer-funded AIS scholarship. Yes, very nice...

If we wish to dig even deeper into that particular Croatian squad, we can point to three other sons of Croatian immigrants who also displayed an admirable loyalty to their country of birth, in this case Germany: Ivan Klasnic and the Kovac brothers, Niko and Robert.

Towards the end of his time with Croatia Zagreb (that’s Dinamo Zagreb under one of its 1990s aliases) Mark (or Marko as he now called himself) Viduka was constantly booed by the fans because he had originally been personally recruited by the then-Croatian president Franjo Tudjman, whose popularity had subsequently plummeted. This expedited his transfer to Celtic. I recall seeing an interview with Viduka on Australian TV in which he discussed his shock at the constant heckling and stated that this was a shattering experience because he had grown up as and remained a “very Croatian oriented person†and “loved Croatiaâ€. That’s all very good, but it’s not what one wishes to hear from an Australian international...

Remember Ned Zelic? Well, when he was in dispute with Socceroos coach Frank Farina (a right tactical mastermind if ever I saw one...) before eventually refusing to play for Australia ever again he made many references to his “Croatian bloodâ€, the inference being that he would have preferred to play for Croatia. Yet again, that’s not what one expects from an Australian international. Now that he is retired, Zelic is a TV football pundit who conveniently acts the patriotic Australian (at least in front of the cameras...).

In conclusion, let me repeat that it is not my intention to offend anyone. If my words have offended anyone, well, please accept my humblest apologies...

Just a little tip for everyone..

As You may have noticed, my post above was quite long and, part of the way through, I got up to, er, answer the proverbial "call of nature" and took some time to have a drink and generally stuff around.

I returned after a while and finished the post, the little yellow "auto saved" notice kicking in regularly. When I clicked on to "Submit Reply", the system informed me that I had been logged out! When I logged back in again, my post had disappeared and could not be recovered. Thankfully, I had copied and pasted the thing into a Word document prior to the attempted posting (which is a habit of mine), so I simply pasted it back in (after unloading a bucketload of imprecations and shaking a fist at the computer, of course).

So the tip is: if You are composing a post and feel the need to wander off for a while, always copy what You have written into a Word document - just in case things go awry...

Rebajlo and friends: Excellent thread on the tragedy of English football. Before about 1980, I would race to see an English football game, when available on pre-Cable and satellite TV. Now the UK teams are so filled with Negroes that it's just not English anymore. The quality of play certainly has declined.

Now I race to see any Irish hurling match I can find, because those teams are largely devoid of Negroes. Funny how Irish hurling is practically banned from the sports airwaves.

rebajlo, you mentionned twitter in the "happy hour" section, and look at this:

A Liverpool statement read: "Following today’s game we were made aware of an image being circulated on social media relating to an incident at this afternoon’s FA Cup tie.

"We are now working closely with Merseyside Police to establish the facts of what occurred and identify the individual involved.

"We would urge any of our supporters with any information to contact either the club or the police."

nationality shouldn't be determined by the country of birth, except for countries of the "new world"
a croatian born in germany is a croatian in my opinion
an italian born in france is an italian also, according to me

jus soli didn't exist in germany until 2000, it's a total nonsense and an insult to the local people

it doesn't mean that they can't live there, but they shouldn't have the same rights than the local people

victory 3-0 of liverpool, with a goal of carroll, against wolverhampton
meanwhile, chelsea did a disapointing draw against swansea
so liverpool is now 4 points away from the 4th place

the next matches will be crucial
the next 4 matches will be against tottenham, manchester united, everton, and arsenal

i think suarez will be back for those matches (he will make his return in the next match i think)

also, gareth bale scored his 9th and 10th goal in premier league this season, impressive
it seems that he really plays as a middlefielder now (assou ekoto is the fullback i think)

In any case, I only raised the issue of integration as Porthos posed a question about the compulsory removal of "ethnic" components of clubs' names in Australia and the relevant fans' subsequent reaction...

Queens Park looks to be the most heinous squad in the Premier League. Their manager must be snorting the cocoa powder and buying into the black athletic superiority myth. Too bad his squad is a bottom dwelling, talentless bunch. If the team is to struggle, then why not fill the roster with English players in an English league?

Anyway, they are tied with the far Whiter Blackburn and Woverhampton for the final relegation spot. Let's hope they receive it.

regarding QPR, they blackened even more during the winter transfer window
they bought 2 big failures, taiwo from ac milan, and cissé from lazio
in his second match with his new team, cissé made his team lose thanks to a red card for grabbing by the throat one of his oponents:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/16890908

it was against wolverhampton, so they gifted 3 points to an important rival, it could be costly for them

Here is Wojciech Szczesny's penalty save from last week's match against Liverpool. Phenomenal stuff!

Note Luis Suarez's initial dive to "win" the penalty...
