the Blue Devils have the darkest overall roster that i can remember in recent years, but the frontline is packed with exciting White talent.

if the season began today, 3 White athletes would be in the starting lineup: 6-10 power forward Mason Plumlee (perhaps the most athletic big man in the country), sharp-shooting, shot-blocking 6-11 forward Ryan Kelly, and 6-8 freshman small forward Alex Murphy.

6-11 freshman power forward Marshall Plumlee will come off the bench.

Mason Plumlee

everyone who follows basketball should know all about Mason Plumlee, as he is a highlight reel attacking the rim. Plumlee is a player of the year candidate, and if he translates his talent into production then Duke should have an unstoppable post presence. additionally, he and Kelly are the unquestioned leadera of this year's Blue Devil team.

Ryan Kelly

Ryan Kelly has quietly had a strong career for the Dukies. a tremendous 3-point shooter, Kelly is also a good rebounder and shot blocker. he is a matchup nightmare.

Alex Murphy

the one White starter that is new to the collegiate scene is Alex Murphy (whose older brother plays for Florida). a slasher at 6-8, Murphy played for the Finnish u-20 national team in the FIBA u-20 World Championships, where he led his team in scoring, rebounding, and shot blocking. a solid perimeter shooter, Murphy prefers to attack the rim, both to score and rebound.

Marshall Plumlee

Marshall Plumlee is the final in the trio of brothers who explode with athleticism. he should get a lot of minutes off the bench behind the two senior big men.

Duke was picked #8 by Associated Press in the preseason poll.

just a quick update:

Marshall Plumlee will miss a few more weeks with a stress fracture in his foot. when he comes back, he should log big minutes.

Alex Murphy has apparently fallen out of favor with Coach K for some reason ... although, it's not like the "phenomenal" affletes who are getting his minutes are doing much. combining for 21 minutes-per-game in the early going, Amile Jefferson and Josh Hairston are averaging a combined 5 points and 4 rebounds per game. ouch.

hopefully, Murphy will re-emerge soon.

in the meantime, Mason Plumlee has been completely dominant. always terrifically athletic, Plumlee has now become terrifically productive. he's averaging almost 22 points per game, to go with 8.7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2.7 blocks per contest. oh! and he's shooting over 77% from the floor AND from the free throw line (where he has been a HUGE liability previously in his career).

Ryan Kelly has been solid, but he still hasn't become the big-time scorer i think he's capable of being. still, he's averaging over 10 ppg to go with 5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks.

Mason Plumlee had a BIG game today in a surprisingly tough contest at home against Santa Clara. the Wooden Award candidate finished with yet another double-double (he leads the ACC in that category): 22 points (on 6 of 10 from the floor), a game-high 15 rebounds, a game-high 5 assists, and 1 blocked shot.

fellow multi-talented big man Ryan Kelly had a solid outing, as well, also garnering a double-double. Kelly totaled 10 points (on 3 of 8 shooting) and 11 rebounds while adding 1 blocked shot, a steal, and 2 assists.

on a side note, this may be the last year i cheer for Duke for the foreseeable future. Coach K has apparently decided that he is no longer interested in recruiting White athletes. Duke has 3 commitments for 2013, zero are White. Duke has extended targeted 5 athletes for 2014 ... and zero are White. after recruiting zero White players for 2012, Coach K will only have two White scholarship athletes on the roster for next season: the so far seldom-used Marshall Plumlee and Alex Murphy. ugh.

JC, don't give up just yet. Maybe Coach K is just having mental lapse. He may need a reminder of what happened to the 1998-1999 team that was littered with mostly black players, 3 of which became pretty good pros, Shane Battier, Elton Brand and Corey Maggette.

With Battier, Brand and Maggette, they also had Nate James, Trajan Langdon, William Avery, and Chris Carrawell, but couldn't close the the deal in a final loss to Connecticut.

In 93-94, when they lost Leattner and Hurley, Grant Hill couldn't give Duke their 3rd Championship in a row, losing to Arkansas with a 10 point lead with 5 mins. to go in the finals!

He Coach K will come back to his senses at some point, maybe, I hope!

I'm a lifelong ACC guy, so I'll always have some love & respect for Coach K (& Duke).. they've been the 80s Celtics of the NCAA off & on for a long time.
I watched the Duke-Santa Clara game today, and got to see two good young White guys (in Plumlee & Kelly).
But i think, their high profile has put them under the P.C. microscope, so Coach K will pro-actively continue to die-versify his program to prevent criticism. Curry is a good mulatto player, he played well today...etc.
but Duke is probably gonna pass the mantle,.. the next Duke will probably be a smaller school, that starts to consistently win in the tournament.. that can quietly & effectively develop a clean-cut, predominately White program wihout prying, and critical eyes trying to shame their identity.

a program like Butler with their recent success comes to mind, they were a mostly White squad no (?) maybe someone like them..

Thought the same thing when I saw Duke on TV yesterday. Two whites on the court with - apparently - a third who sees decent time. So, better than average, but nothing great. Would still cheer for a lot of teams like Indiana, BYU, Butler, Notre Dame ...etc over them.

How soon we forget, or many here may be younger than me and don't remember that DUKE and Coach K have been one of the most pro-white big time NCAA Basketball programs EVER!

From Mark Alarie....to the current Plumlee's (all 3), I can't name another coach who has given more white players an opportunity to play for one of the greatest programs of all time; given the current racially-biased pro-black society we live in. If someone else can, I'll stand corrected!

Sure the rise of Butler and the recent surge of Indiana has been great for them, but Duke and Coach K have always been there. Indiana under Coach Knight made there runs in the 70's and 80's, but Knight had his share of affletes too. See also, Dean Smith (UNC).

Recently, schools like Butler, Creighton, etc. may have taken some of the better white recruits Duke has targeted, making the pool of white players a little more sparse lately.

Coach K will recruit the white players that are there and want to play for him, but if they are not available, there's nothing he can do.

It's almost like the New England Patriot situation, when we sometimes get after Belichick for not playing Woodhead more. I would love to see DW starting and playing more, but we can't abandon Belichick and The Patriots for having 9 white starters on offense instead of 10-11!

I have nothing but respect for what Duke and Coach K, given the amount of pressure he's under, have done with their recruitment and support for white BB players over the last 32 years and I will not abandon them just yet.

I wouldn't tell you who to cheer for. You can cheer for whomever you want. Please re-read my previous posts, but to answer your question: you should cheer for both ND and Duke, because they do recruit white players and until they quit, we should go on cheering for all schools that go after white players.

I cheer for Notre Dame as well, but I grew up a Duke fan and there's been little reason for me to change. They have always recriuted white players, but they can't land them all!

How long have you watched Duke basketball?

I simply stated the facts about Duke, that they always recruited white players above and beyond any other top program. I asked to name another; and no one has! If they can, I stand corrected. Until I see a drastic change for a few years, I want just abandon Coach K.

He starts 2 white players now, with another getting ample playing time, and another top white recruit apparently is not living up to expectations at this time.

Coach K will always recruit white players IF THEY ARE AVAILABLE. If they are not there for a year or 2, I guess he could just quit or he can go on doing what he enjoys and is excellent at. If there were not as many whites in the current class, what is he to do? I must admit, I don't track high school basketball as much as I do HS football, but if it's the same as football, I can tell you this, the white kids have to show up to get recruited.

Duke is still on a good run and has been as long as I can remember, except a couple of years in the early 80's, from the 1960's until now. As long as Coach K is there they will continue to be on a good run.

The Harbaugh from Stanford to the 49ers is a different situation.

I thought I'd put this here about Duke. The Blue Devils have been going to a nearly all-black roster in recent years, and it will be even more so with Plumlee and Kelly gone this year. However, Marshall Plumlee and Alex Murphy should still see time, and they finally have another highly rated white recruit - at a shooting guard too!!
