The man is a legend. He is so good, he should be inducted in the Hall of Fame while he is still playing. I'm serious. Way to go Dirk!

Was at Mavs/Pistons game, clinching shot in the fourth quarter over Ben Wallace fully extended was very, very, very tough. Seeing Dirk fullcourt and close up though, his D is an embarassment.

And Dirk's defense has gotten much better over the years. However, he still takes nights off, which he apparently did last night. It was the second game of a back to back tandem. Dirk is a fantastic player, a unique offensive player who basically cannot be guarded without a double team. However, reading this thread I see some contend that Dirk is better than Bird. That's a bit hyperbolic. Bird's all round game is better than Dirk's, and Bird shot just as well. Plus, Bird had that something extra, a persona that raised him to the highest level. Dirk doesn't appear to have that - few European players do. For instance, I can't see Dirk walking into the locker room before the three point contest, looking around, announcing he was just trying to determine who was going to finish second, and then going out and winning the contest going away. Or telling someone like Xavier McDaniel just where he was going to hit the game winning shot, and then draining the game winner from that exact spot on the floor. I think it would be hard for a European player to come to the U.S. and just take over like that. We haven't seen it yet.

Alworth No.19, I won't speak for the others, but I would never compare Dirk Nowitzki to Larry Bird anytime, there's just no way to compare the two.

Larry Bird is just not of this planet, he is from another universe, or another dimension. Bird had both the game and the personality that separates him from most players (white or black). Dirk is very special in his own way, one of the most unique players ever to step on an NBA floor. There are many things Dirk lacks from Bird, and that's normal, no two individuals is ever the same. Dirk let's his game do the talking, it's a typical blue-collar personality. Bird was blue-collar too but, with uncanny swagger. Larry could do anything on the floor (offense, defense), he was just that phenomenal of a a player. Dirk can do only half as many, and is often unspectacular in most occasions but, at least he gets the job done. In the end, the one thing I'm so proud about Dirk is this....he is the best white player since Larry Bird in the clutch, and is the best European ever to display such an uncanny ability. He's no Larry Bird....he's Dirk Nowitzki!!!Edited by: j41181

By hitting that gamewinning shot vs. Milwaukee, here's the list of gamewinners Dirk has done over the years:

vs. Phoenix (2005) - road
vs. Spain (2005) - neutral
vs. Toronto (2005) - home
vs. Clippers (2006) - road
vs. Phoenix (2006) - home
vs. Utah (2008) - home
vs. Philadelphia (2009) - road
vs. Indiana (2009) - road
vs. Milwaukee (2009) - road

Way to go, Dirk!

Whoops! Almost forgot, Dirk numbers on that spectacular OT game:

32 points (12-25 FG's, 1-2 3pt's, 7-8 FT's)
11 rebounds
3 assists
2 steals
1 block
ZERO TO's

Dirk will NEVER be a great defender, but he's greatly improved that weakness of his, and plays respectable defense in most occasions.

Which is more than good enough. Actually the German SF who was a bit like Bird was Detlef Schrempf, a damn good player for a long time. But there should be 5 or 6 Dirks playing in the NBA. That's what so maddening. I can't believe that Dirk, or Bird for that matter, is genetically unique.

Ditto here. Dirk's a top 2 or 3 NBA player & a stud on the court. However, Larry Bird is the best player to ever step on the hardwood....ever. He had uncanny eye/hand coordination, killer instinct & a radar for the ball. MJ had all the hype for his highlight reel & scoring...but Bird bested him in 4 of 8 major stats (they were tied in two). Dirk will be a HOF'er, but Bird is the best of all time.

I'm still irked that Larry Bird finished with 8,974 rebounds... I would have played crippled just so I could get 26 more boards!

According to Bird's haters, the "bruhvahs" allowed Bird to become an elite rebounder, especially for someone his size..

Deadlift is referring to DWF's on other boards who are constantly dissing Bird's legacy, since a white guy couldn't possibly have been that good. Bird was a physical specimen, but also had great skills in regards to shooting, and yes, jumping. But, like most white players, and Dirk Nowitski, was a really, really smart player. He knew what had to be done, when to do it, and how to do it. The typical black afflete just relies on his "skeels"

Gentlemen, let me put it straight and simple for all of you:

Larry Bird is the BEST EVER in all of basketball (along with Magic & Jordan). I wish there was some way to copy and duplicate that brain of his, because he's just from a parallel universe. The best there was, the best there'll ever be.

Dirk Nowitzki is the best white player since Larry Bird, the best of the so called "Next Birds", and the best European ever to play in the NBA. Steve Nash deserves much mention too, with his 2 MVP's. But Dirk is better by a slight notch, because of his amazing durability, consistency, and countless clutch performances. Nash too has great durability, consistency, and many clutch moments.

Let not forget John Stockton, who without doubt, is one of the best ever to play in the NBA, regardless of position. His numerous NBA records (including 15,806 assists, and 3,265 steals) will stand the test of time. We all should at least be glad when, the moment Stockton hanged his sneakers, Dirk and Nash were on their way to NBA superstardom.

Since Dirk and Nash are both in their 30's now, the question arises now, "who will succeed them as the next white superstars of the NBA?" As of now, there are several young and promising white prospects in both the NBA, NCAA, and International scenes. Only time and opportunities will tell which of these young-bloods will become the next white superstars of NBA basketball. I would love to see an Asian superstar too (if it ever happens), Yao Ming is very good, but I think there's lots of room for someone to top him someday. Anything that will bust the NBA's Caste System, and balance it's demographics once and for all. Edited by: j41181

Hey J41181, your assessment is brilliant. Like I mentioned in an earlier football-related post, the start is in the youth leagues, high school, and then D1 programs here in the US. Fortunately, the Europeans don't realize that only blacks are any good;-) I look at the recruiting forums, and the overall content of many teams, and the "blacklete" problem in basketball is identical to football. Many outstanding high school white players are given zero to three stars where an afflete with lesser stats is worshipped as a basketball god.

I honestly think Europe is laughing at the U.S "sports system". This is the only nation I can think of- where people can take a site like CaucasianRivals.com seriously. Are people really stupid enough- with all the great white WRs playing right now in the FBS- to believe Rivals top 100 WR prospect list with 1 white on it is legit? Rivals is clearly in bed with the United Negro College Fund, it's owned by cultural Marxist Yahoo after all. Their list is so black that even the most drunken of fans should be scratching their head and wondering about a caste system.

LOL!!!! WL, thanks! You beat me this, and I appreciate your passion!!

That's no doubt one of the best games I've ever seen Dirk perform live, in person!! I will treasure this for a long time!! Way to go, Dirk!!

Oh, if anybody wants to know, that's 40 pt. game No. 19 for Dirk! Everyone can rave about Kobe Bryant's 100 forty point games, I'll rave about Dirk's 40 point games, and he has 19 of them and counting!!!

I want a title for Dirk so bad. I felt so bad for Stockton and Malone with Utah when they retired. Dirk deserves a ring. I wish Stern and Cuban didn't hate each other so much. I belive that could bring a few more calls against the Mavs in the playoffs. That may sound crazy but I still swear that the Mavs vs Heat Series was a fix. The Mavs were up 2-0 and looking good in game 3 until the refs turned against them. The whole team complained that they couldn't even look at a heat player without them going to the line. D.Wade shot more free throws than any player I have ever seen in an NBA Final. He literally won the Nba Finals for the Heat from the foul line. Look it up if you don't belive me. That should have been the year for Dirk and the Mavs. Still hoping they can get it done this year.

WL, The 2006 Finals was one of the best and most disappointing outcomes I've ever seen in all my times of following the NBA. Dirk came very close to lifting both the NBA and Finals MVP trophies, only to be denied by some of the worst officiatings ever in Finals history. I once saw video in YouTube, were the Finals match was in Miami, and I saw it at dead-ball, and the clock kept running down for 5-10 seconds (WOW), and nobody took notice of that. One of the big reasons Dallas lost all it's games in Miami.

Regardless of how Dirk's career ends, I'll be forever grateful for the many wonderful moments I got to see of him, in those live televised games.

I never saw Bird in a live televised game, I was way too young to know anything them.

There's little doubt that the Mavs were hosed in the 06 finals by the refs. Badly hosed. In game 5 of that series Wade shot more foul shots by himself than the entire Mav team combined - and even then the Heat was bailed out at the end of the game by three non-calls on Wade, followed by phantom call to send him to the line to win it. Given that the Daugherty Scandal broke the very next year I think many fans have mentally conceded the title to the Mavs, and the Heat title is sinking down the Memory Hole. Dirk went into a funk in the latter part of that series, and stayed in it through the playoffs the following season. I'm concerned that he is putting together all these excellent games this early in the season; true, he took the summer off and didn't play for his national team, but there is a long way to go in this season. The NBA season is much too long - it should be reduced by twenty regular season games - and Dirk is going to run out of gas in the playoffs if he keeps these heroics up. He's 31, with a lot of mileage on his wheels. If he keeps clocking 39 minutes a night - he played 45 tonight - I can see that chronic ankle problem coming back - and then the Mavs are screwed.

Well, we know who it won't be: it won't be Darko! The European pipeline does seem to be running low- I haven't heard of any exceptional talents coming from that direction; plenty of good ball players, but no one a cut above. But, really, this is missing the point. The decline of white American basketball talent is simply a disgrace. There is a mild uptick this season, but overall the situation is beyond dismal. For every white foreign player in the NBA there should be two Americans. If MLB can fund a program to get more black Americans in the big leagues, a similar program for white players in the NBA should perhaps be explored.

That will never happen. The NBA doesn't want more whites in the league. Sad but true. They should because it is the only way that they can get better ratings. They always say diversity is a good thing. So get more whites, asians, and some latinos in the league. We really need alot more whites period. Alot of the white stars in college never even get drafted. What a joke!

As for Dirk. He is a legend. I liked what they said in tonights game. He is simply the best shooting 7 foot player ever. High praise and he deserves it. What a stud!

I watched that game last night. Dirk was unstoppable! If he keeps playing like this he'll surely be a two time MVP

Was Duncan guarding Nowitzki the majority of the game? I remember watching a Spurs-Mavericks game a few years ago and the announcers were saying Dirk is way too quick for Duncan.
