Remember the high school Billy from the movie White Men can't jump said he played high school ball in Louisiana, Country Day ? And Wesley Snipes said that is a code word name for a little white private school. Well the school actually exists two blocks outside New Orleans. Its a tiny rich kids school.

The 1A school recently shocked the city in winning the CYO tournament which featured all the cities premier 5A teams. It was their first time to be invited to the annual event and they destroyed many black powerhouses. They feature a 6'9" kid in the paint along with a few sharp shooters.

Feel free to check out their web site, "country day metairie park" search and/or nola.com sports section.

Matt Stone scored 20 points to lead Country Day to a 58-50 victory against Karr to help the Cajuns claim the 53rd annual CYO Basketball Classic on Saturday night at Jesuit.

Country Day (6-2), a Class 1A school, was participating in the classic for the first time and defeated five teams that play in higher classifications to win the championship.

Stone's 3-pointer gave the Cajuns a 44-31 lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars (9-2) chipped away at the lead.

Ian Charles' basket trimmed the Cajuns' lead to six points with 5:19 remaining. Jon Anderson's basket gave Country Day a 51-42 lead with 2:58 left. However, Darnell Williams 3-pointer and a basket by Jared Berry cut the Cajuns' lead to 51-47 with 1:29 remaining.

On the ensuing possession, Eddie Ludwig rebounded his own shot to score and extend the Country Day lead to 53-47.

The Cajuns outscored Karr 5-3 in the final minute to secure the victory.

"Karr picked up its intensity in the final quarter," Country Day Coach Mike McGuire said. "We had three critical turnovers that let Karr back into the game, but we made our free throws late in the game."

Charles' steal and layup gave the Cougars a 9-4 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Cajuns went on an 8-0 run, including a 3-pointer by Ludwig, to take a 12-9 lead.

The Cajuns did an excellent job of defending Cougars leading scorer Kedrick Hogans.

"We could not get the ball to Hogans," said Karr coach Bill Robinson. "They did a good job of defending him. Their post defense was excellent."

Stone had four 3-pointers and 11 assists to lead a balanced scoring attack. Ludwig and Anderson scored 14 points apiece. Parham Motaghedi scored 10 points for Country Day.

Anderson was selected the tournament's most valuable player.

"We played hard to the end," Stone said. We proved we can play with the big schools, but we are not where we should be as a team. We have to decrease our turnovers and do a better job of blocking out."

Wow, all that vital info strung along for days! How many times must I stress the utility of the edit button before someone actually uses it? Oh well, you can't blame me for trying.
