ESPN's website is currently featuring the top high school recruits for 2005 as decided by Tom Lemming. Lemming is one of those relatively unknown but influential people whose rankings of high school football players all over the United States figure strongly in which stars go on to be recruited and developed at the big I-A programs, and which are fated to be small college players and I-A walk-ons.

Here is his list of the 25 top wide receivers: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/news/story?id=1827 354

Of the 25, looking at their names and the schools they're going to, it's possible that #6 and #14 are white, but maybe not. None of the top 25 tailbacks would appear to be white, big surprise there.

From the link above you can click to Lemming's top 25 at the other positions. We need to learn a lot more about these individuals and "services" that rank high school football players and the criteria they use to compile their rankings. We also need to get to the point where we can compile our own list of high school stars from the 50 states, both white and black, and then systematically track what happens to them after high school.

That would be great, Don. To know what happens with these
players throughout their collegiate and professional careers
would be great. And it would be great to know how the white
high schoolers stack up with their black counterparts in terms
of level of competition that they face, stats, etc.

Trey Stross is the only white receiver I think. David Nelson is
black. It Is a pretty black recruiting class. Get this,
Alex Kanellis, white recruit at guard is faster than DJ Hord, a black
recruit for WR. They were both in the middle of the top 25 at
their respective positions. Kanellis is being screwed by the
system I think. A great athlete like this will be cut because of
his size(255 pounds). He runs a 4.65 so shouldn't he play TE.
