Arizona Illegal-Immigrant Law Draws Strong Opposition

By KEVIN O'LEARY Kevin O'learyâ€" Fri Apr 16, 7:40 pm ET

The toughest anti-illegal-immigrant measure in a generation passed the Arizona legislature this week. If signed, as expected, by Republican governor Jan Brewer, the law will give local police sweeping new powers in regard to undocumented workers. Currently, immigration offenses are violations of federal, not state, law, and local police officers only can inquire about a person's immigration status if that person is suspected of another crime. Under SB1070, however, Arizona police will have the right to stop anyone on "reasonable suspicion" that they may be an illegal immigrant and can arrest them if they are not carrying a valid driver's license or identity papers.

Passions about illegal immigration run high in Arizona, a point of entry for thousands of undocumented workers going to the U.S. from Mexico, and tensions were heightened by the recent murder of a rancher in a remote border area where illegal crossings are rampant. With 6.6 million residents, Arizona's illegal-immigrant population is estimated to be half a million people.

All 35 Republicans in the lower Arizona house voted for the bill, while 21 Democrats voted against it. The bill passed the state senate earlier. Law enforcement in the state is split over the legislation, with rank and file supporting the measure and the Association of Chiefs of Police in opposition, saying it could hinder investigations by making the immigrant community hesitant to speak with police.

Appalled at the bill's harsh sweep, immigrant advocates are promising court challenges. "This is the most far-reaching anti-immigration bill in memory and it turns the presumption of innocence on its head," says Alessandra Meetze, executive director of the ACLU of Arizona. "It singles out the failure to carry ID as a reason to believe you are an undocumented alien. What this means is that citizens will need to carry papers with them at all times. It means people like my mother, who has brown skin and an accent, can be arrested and detained until it is confirmed that they are legally in the country."

"This is the most anti-immigrant legislation the U.S. has seen since the House bill of 2005 which set off huge demonstrations across the country," says Newman. "The sheer breadth of this bill is going to alter the national discussion." He says the bill does four things: criminalizes undocumented status, enlists local police in illegal-immigration enforcement, allows citizens to sue police departments if citizens think the police are not being sufficiently vigilant in enforcement and forbids any city from ignoring the state law and becoming a so-called sanctuary zone. "That's before you get to racial profiling," says Newman, "because anyone who looks Latino or has an accent can be swept up, arrested and detained while their immigration status is verified."

Can the law stand up to scrutiny? "There are some things that states can do and some that states can't do, but this law threads the needle perfectly," says Kris Kobach, a University of Missouriâ€"Kansas City School of Law professor who helped write the legislation. He believes it will withstand constitutional challenge. "In the bill, Arizona only penalizes what is already a crime under federal law," says Kobach, a Yale Law School graduate and onetime counsel to former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft. "That constitutes concurrent enforcement in legal terms, which the courts have said is permissible." Says Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, a conservative think tank in Washington: "The rhetoric that this bill will create a police state is ridiculous. What this does is give police officers an extra tool in their tool kit."

"Enough is enough," says state senator Pearce, speaking about the increased violence along the Arizona border with Mexico. "One family has been burglarized 18 times and a number of officers have been killed and maimed in the line of duty dealing with illegal immigrants who are criminals. Our message is very clear," says Pearce. "Illegal aliens should find another state besides Arizona to visit."

April 19, 2010

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Three national Jewish groups urged Arizona's governor to veto a bill that would force local authorities to enforce federal immigration law.

If passed, the bill "would make state and local law enforcement officers' jobs nearly impossible, and would bring us further from, not closer to, the goal we all share of making our communities safer," said the letter sent Monday from the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, the American Jewish Committee and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs to Gov. Jan. Brewer, a Republican. "It would also cause hardship to countless Arizona residents -- U.S. citizens, legal immigrants, and undocumented immigrants alike -- who if this law is passed will live under a cloud of suspicion and fear."

The legislation, which becomes law unless Brewer vetoes it in the next five days, would require police to ask those suspected of being in the country illegally to produce documentation. It also would ban soliciting work from people on sidewalks if it slows traffic.

Brewer has said she has reservations about the bill, which would be the toughest such measure in the country.

Opponents are concerned that it could lead to racial profiling and inhibit undocumented workers from reporting crime.

AZ House: Check Obama's Citizenship

POSTED: 7:15 pm MST April 19, 2010

PHOENIX -- The Arizona House on Monday voted for a provision that would require President Barack Obama to show his birth certificate if he hopes to be on the state's ballot when he runs for reelection.

The House voted 31-22 to add the provision to a separate bill. The measure still faces a formal vote.

It would require U.S. presidential candidates who want to appear on the ballot in Arizona to submit documents proving they meet the constitutional requirements to be president.

Phoenix Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema said the bill is one of several measures that are making Arizona "the laughing stock of the nation."

Mesa Republican Rep. Cecil Ash said he has no reason to doubt Obama's citizenship but supports the measure because it could help end doubt.

That lying , crooked, little weasel McCain is trying to con the people into thinking he's seen the light. Too little too late. He must believe his Senate seat is in jeopardy.

John McCain Tacks Right on Immigration
Kasie Hunt, Politico, April 19, 2010

Sen. John McCain praised a tough Arizona anti-immigration bill that will let police arrest people who aren't carrying identification, the latest move in McCain's rightward shift in advance of a tough Republican Senate primary this summer.

"I think it's a very important step forward,"Â McCain said Monday. "I can fully understand why the legislature would want to act."Â

It's a dramatic switch for a senator who supported comprehensive immigration reform with Democratic lion Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) just four years ago. McCain is facing a primary challenge from the right in former Rep. J.D. Hayworth.

{snip}

Immigration reform advocates were bewildered.

"He risked his political career for immigration reform, and now he is compromising his principles to fight for his political life,"Â said Frank Sharry, executive director of America's Voice and a longtime immigration reform advocate.

{snip}

The bill passed the state's House on a largely party-line vote last week, and is set for a vote in the Arizona Senate Monday.

McCain's comments to reporters came as he and fellow Republican Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl unveiled a 10 step plan to secure Arizona's border with Mexico. McCain and Kyl want to send 3,000 National Guard troops to help an overstretched border patrol curtail increasingly violent incidents along the border, among other measures.

McCain said the plan did not need to move in tandem with a potential federal immigration reform bill.

"The lesson is clear: First we have to secure the border,"Â McCain said. "If you want to enact some other reforms, how can that be effective when you have a porous border?"Â

"So we have to secure the border first,"Â he said.
McCain asked the federal government for more National Guard troops last year, but the request was not granted. The National Guard has been deployed to protect the border before, Kyl said, but troops were moved out as the war in Iraq escalated and their capabilities were needed elsewhere.

Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) are writing a bipartisan immigration bill the administration says it wants to push through Congress this year. Lawmakers have been meeting with business and labor interests to try and hash out an agreement.

{snip}

McCain was a key author of immigration reform during President George W. Bush's second term, and has previously championed many of the border security measures included in the package he unveiled Monday

"I don'.t see any people from other countries rushing to become Mexican citizens.

The grave yards in France, Britain, and Germany are full of dead American soldiers who fought for rights.

Here are the fundamental differences between European and today's immigrants.
1. European immigration was legal; today's immigration is not.
2. Europeans worked; today's immigrants live off of welfare.
3. Europeans assimilated; today's immigrants balk at the suggestion to learn English and want everyone else to learn their language.
4. The children of European immigrants became lawyers, doctors, scientists and leaders; the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of today's immigrants are still doing the menial, janitorial jobs that they did.
5. American benefited from European immigration so much so that people like Mexicans wanted to live here; show me ONE US city built by European immigrants that has benefited from today's immigration.
6. Europeans came here to work for better life; today's immigrants come here for an easy life.

I live in the valley. I've been to North Hollywood. I've been to Van Nuys. I've been to Panorama City. Sorry folks, but the only person experiencing racism is me, a white guy. Drive to the valley. look around. Not just inside shops, gas stations, laundromats, restaurants, and liquor stores..... Look around(careful not to wreck now though) at the other cars as you are driving. I'll go 8 blocks, yes EIGHT blocks without seeing one white face. If an illegal Mexican goes to Malibu or Santa Monica, yeah maybe they experience some looks or disapproving gazes. But when your an illegal Mexican in the valley, you are amongst friends. All the signs are in spanish. Everyone around you is Mexican. Please stop telling me about their poor plight and how much racism they experience. Los Angeles has the 2nd largest population of Mexicans in the world. Guess who's number 1? Mexico City. So L.A has more Mexicans than every other city in Mexico except for Mexico City..... Nah, there is racism in the valley. But I, am the only one to experience it.

I don't trust MOST mexicans because they approve of illegal immigration. I have asked them.

They steal. Taking peoples identities and jacking peoples @#$% ain't cool

They have too many babies. Then taxpayers have to pay for their trash children. That's not cool either

Their first exposure to America was illegally crossing the border. Their first step in America was against the law. My first step in America was being born in a hospital to legal parents who spoke English and were prepared to teach me values. Ya know, things like, I dunno....stealing is wrong. Lying is wrong. Education is important. Respect is important. Ya know, the basics.

They are racist. I have never felt welcome in Van Nuys, Panorama City, Arleta, or Sylmar. I get looks. I get hard stares. Nobody speaks English. yeah, that's pretty much racism. When you walk into a gas station and some gang-banger wannabe stares you down, yeah, they don't like you very much. That's pretty apparent.

They join gangs
They spray graffiti
They don't flush down toilet paper with @#$% on it. They throw it on the ground
They send much needed funds from their cash under the table jobs to Mexico
They take jobs Americans used to do but wont do anymore because digging ditches for $3.50 an hour used to pay $12 an hour. Of COURSE it's jobs we won't do. Mexicans do it now, but I don't admire them for doing so. I look upon them with shame for taking a once $12 an hour job and driving down wages so that greedy bosses can pay them a 5th of what they'd pay"

"All you need to do to understand Mexico's attitude toward illegal immigration is try being an illegal Guatemalan in Mexico. I wish we would adopt the measures Mexico has in place against illegal immigration. For example: no bank account in Mexico without for non-citizens without a visa. That alone would make it much more difficult for people to remain here illegally.

The plain fact is that most of the Mexican migrants are the poorest, least educated Mexicans. Mexicans I know are astounded at the stereotypes that we have in the States about them. Then, when they see their compatriots that have immigrated to the US, they understand. It is an ignorant stereotype; but it is understandable. That is contrasted to European and Asian immigrants who are generally middle class or above with above average education levels. The racism is ignorant but being anti-illegal immigration is not racist. We used to call it "law and order". I have worked and lived in Mexico and love Mexicans in general and I wish all legal immigrants the best. My wife is Hispanic (Venezuela) and she immigrated legally. Those that are most harmed by illegal immigration, amnesty or citizenship are those that have gone through all the trouble to do it legally." - Geoffrey Edited by: j41181

What about a national ID card. I know people don't want the gov't bugging them, but at this point what do we do when the gov't doesn't do anything about immigration. I look at it as protecting us. When I was is France, the police came up to me and asked me for my passport. I wasn't doing anything. We are going to have to do that in this country. If you are legal, you have nothing to worry about if you have a national ID card. If you don't have an ID, pack up your things and get on the bus out of here. Also, jail for anyone hiring someone without a national ID card of green card. No executive will risk that.

Victory in Arizona
Apr 24th, 2010 by Hunter Wallace

The Governor of Arizona has finally signed the toughest anti-illegal immigration law in the United States. Barack Hussein Obama, the President of Blue America, has strongly denounced it. Jews, Liberals and Hispanic groups are expressing their shock and outrage. Cardinal Mahoney of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has likened it to "Nazism."Â￾ I'm loving every second of it!

The new Arizona law would essentially criminalize all illegal aliens in the state. It gives the police sweeping powers to detain any Hispanic lawbreaker they suspect of being in the country illegally. Illegal aliens will be forced to provide documentation which they don't have. Most of them will be forced to self deport to Mexico or other states.

In related news, J.D. Hayworth is mounting a strong primary challenge to John McCain, and actually has a good chance of winning. It has forced McCain to endorse militarizing the border, supporting the anti-illegal law, and vowing to filibuster his very own "comprehensive immigration reform"Â￾ bill. Liberals are screaming betrayal.

The immigration debate in Arizona has shifted dramatically in our direction. Hold on a minute "¦ the Southwest is not lost. Whites in Arizona are rejecting Aztlan. The fight has only begun.

The 3 Jewish groups who were against this wonderful law, are anti-Jewish as well as anti white.

What do these fools think will happen if or when blacks and hispanics are the majority?

The professor at UAlabama Huntsville incident will happen much more often.

As I've said, I admire many Jews. But many very liberal Jews have some type of subconscious death wish. Also very liberal Jews care nothing about their fellow Jews. Being against this law is a primary example.

I'm a member of the best anti-illegal immigration group: NumbersUSA.

They use what sounds like a very effective system to fight amnesty for criminals who have trespassed into our country and other laws such as in state tuition for the criminals who entered our country illegally.
(Imagine that a criminal or offspring of a criminal who broke into our country is reward with lower tuition while out of state white Americans are charged much more )

They send out e mails alerts to their members if a certain bill is coming up for a vote. They have a system where each member can easily send a fax to their congressman , Senators, or others. The NumbersUSA member only has to go to the home page and they are redirected the fax page. The fax page has a number of options . There maybe 8 different faxes that can be sent ,not only on a particular bill but on other bills or other issues. The member constructs a fax stating their opposition to a particular bill to their member of congress. There are several options of what the fax will say. At times , all I did was pick one version ,click, and the fax is sent from NumbersUSA but I assume appears as if I sent it from my own fax. For any castefootball members who really want to fight illegal immigration I recommend NumbersUSA

Maybe a system like this could help fight the caste system in football. From what I've heard it is very expensive.

Jan Brewer at age 66, knows her remaining political career probably will not be a long one. The typical politician is totally obsessed with one thing : staying in office or advancing to a higher office. Brewer's
current office is likely to be high point of her career. She has less to lose following her true beliefs.Edited by: jwhite96

As Don said, this website has brought more attention to the caste system. There could be ways to make the opinions of members of caste football heard more often and heard by others who can help our cause. There are many potential supporters , IMO, here in BAMA.Edited by: jwhite96

My initial entry above was cut off because we lost internet connectivity (due to thunderstorms coming thru NW GA).

I'm also a member of NumbersUSA and believe it's one of the best pro-American, anti-invader sites on the web (right up there with VDARE). I send friends & family articles from #sUSA all the time. The good thing about #sUSA is they're against the illegal invasion...and the "legal" one (H-1Bs, etc.).

Regarding the Jewish communities, one word: Hypocrites!<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

The Jewish communities I know of are gated and some have their own Jewish police patrol. Seems to me that Jewish thought would want a more lawless USAto increase their feelings of being "the other." Once the law is in effect, they should just go to the next "rally" and arrest the whole lot of them seeing as they are probably mostly illegal. From what I hear many legal Hispanics are against illegals as well. It is a slap in the face of anyone who legally immigrates here (going through many hardships no doubt), obeys the law and pays taxes.

Let's hope that Arizona is the first domino to fall in the state led battle against illegal immigration.

As much as I love this new law in Arizona, I fear it may speed up Democrats trying to railroad and ram through a amnesty bill before the November elections. They will use reconcilation and any other trick to get the amnesty bill passed before the elections while they still have the numbers to do so. I have become a Tea Party Activist in the last six months or so and it occupies alot of my time and I can see a sea change among the rank and file average tea partier on the illegal immigration issue and we are already emailing, calling, faxing and demonstrating on the issue and I encourage others here to be vigilant whether it's through the Tea Party or through other things like Dixie and JWhite96 are doing through Numbers USA. There are also plenty of states rights and soveriegnty groups to work through as well. Choose to be a part of something that is making a difference.

I notice in these stories it talks about how the noble protesters have defaced property, and it's reported without condemnation, because these hooligans are "justified" in their outrage. Imagine any so-called "right wing" protest or gathering doing these things and the response from the media.
