An article entitled "About that Mayan calendar"

The Maya, like the Aztec, were savage civilizations with robust populations numbering well into the hundreds of thousands. In the end, they were vanquished with relative ease by only a few hundred Spanish conquistadors.

I simply have a hard time believing that such a primitive society would have been smart enough to predict the end of the world for the rest of us when they couldn’t see it coming for themselves.

Another End of the World Prediction! This one based on the Mayan and other ancient calendars. Several ancient calendar seem to end at around this time, which is interesting in how these calendars are in sink when they weren't suppose to be in contact with each other, but on to the end of the calendar, more likely than the end of the world the calendar ending is the end of an age a measure of time no more significant then going from December 31st to January 1st. Some do believe that an age signifies a change either for the better (a golden age) or worse (a dark age) but the world and time continues either way.

Interestingly, the Mayan civilization collapsed long before the Spanish arrived, and the people living around the ruins may be no more connected to them then the many Arabs are to the ruins in much of North Africa and the middle east, or the blacks in Haiti are to the 18 century ruins, who may have built some of them as slaves.
