A fantastic showing by a number of white athletes so far in this tournament, as pool play is officially over. My all-Olympic team so far:

1st Team
C - Ehadadi (led tourney with 13 blocks and 56 rebounds, while pouring in 83 points for woeful Iran)
PF - Scola (96 points on 62% shooting, 31 rebounds)
SF - Kirilenko (79 points, 32 rebounds, tourney-high 13 steals, 11 blocks, too bad Russia sucks otherwise)
SG - Ginobili (tourney-high 98 points, also 25 assists and 7 steals)
PG - Spanoulis (77 points, 16 assists, 8 steals)

2nd Team
C - P. Gasol (97 points on 70% shooting, 35 boards, 6 blocks)
PF - Nowitzki (85 points, 42 rebounds, robbed of win over China by refs)
SF - Nocioni (65 points, 39 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 blocks)
SG - Fernandez (57 points, 21 rebounds, 14 assists, 5 steals)
PG - Jasikevicius (53 points, tourney-high 27 assists)

Honorable mention
C - Bogut (72 points on 62% shooting, 21 rebounds)
PF - Kleiza (69 points, 29 rebounds)
SF - Newley (66 points on 65% for the Aussies, 5 steals)
SG - Delfino (53 points, 18 rebounds, 11 assists, 7 steals)
PG - Rubio (tourney-high 13 steals, 16 assists, in only 15 minutes per game)Edited by: 89Glory

Read the Team Iran thread. Iranians are tan skinned Aryans and they are officially classified as Caucasian. They are not black, not Asian, not even Arabic or Semitic, so what is left, you tell me?

Also, their language is Indo-European (related to Latin, English, Russian, etc.), which is not a specifically Caucasian thing, but it is something most Caucasians have in common.

Iran is not in Europe and Iranians are not white. I try to avoid the "who is white" argument as much as I can, but this one is a no brainer.

Hamed Ehadadi might be Persian, he might be Kurdish, he might be one of several ethnic groups in Iran. It doesn't matter though, because none of them are white.

Great list I agree with it almost 100% exept for the fact that pau Gasol clearly is the best center.Edited by: white tornado

Thanks, W.T.

Center was definitely the toughest call, but Ehadadi led by a large margin in blocks and rebounds, and his scoring was not far behind, which is doubly impressive considering the team he had to do it on. You gotta admit, Gasol racked up tons of dunks and easy layups because his supporting cast is so good.

Pau is awesome, no doubt, and he played against tougher competition in his pool, for sure. His domination of Yao was sublime, and he is a much more polished player than Ehadadi.

But I think just going by the numbers, Ehadadi gets the nod. Effective does not have to be pretty, you know what I mean? That is the whole Caste Football argument, isn't it? Guys who earn it on the numbers, but get put down because of "intangibles". Anyway, I hope he makes it to the NBA.

Two questions:
- Are Caucasians (i.e., people from the Caucusus region) "white"?
- Are Aryans "white"? (The name "Iran" is related to "Aryan".)
- Are Caucasian Americans "white"? (They are not European).

I'm not being facetious. Rather, from my years watching this website I think there is just below the surface cultural --- but also religious --- identities that everyone seems to not want to touch for fear of breaking apart the good thing that is this website. Yes, there have been many tough online discussions, but I have seen no one really discuss the issue of what has historically defined Western Europe, and why the other areas are "the East". So "white" becomes a tag that is used as a glue to hold it together; but it is a fragile glue.

I will say no more, because I also do not want to light dynamite among brothers.

I probably should have searched more and found a different thread under which to post this.

I think you make some great points, Observer. Historically, Iranians were part of the "East", which causes confusion. But in the context of modern America, Iranians are white. That is how they are classified in anthropology, as one of the three main white groups, Germanic, Slavic, and Iranian. White is what they fill out on the census. Look at some pictures of Iranians, like this lady.

In the context of this website, it also makes sense to think of them as white. Iranian athletic success would help break down pro-black caste prejudice, it is that simple.

The guys who continue to divide whites along ethnic and religious lines are part of the problem. That was all fine and dandy 100 years ago when whites made up over 33% of the global population. Now, we are below 10% and shrinking. United we stand, divided we fall, and whites have to start standing together.
