I watched the fight today. Cortez worked more than Floyd did. Thank you, Mr. Cortez, for preventing Hatton from fighting his fight.

That point deduction was bogus too. Hatton didn't connect the punch!

I agree!

Despite his idiotic premise about Hatton not actually losing and getting his thread locked, Weretard has provided irrefutable proof that Cortez was payed off by Mayweather. Yep. Because people who have formed a secret deal to fix a major sporting contest always embrace and gloat about in front of thousands of people in the building and millions watching on ppv.

But seriously I, like many people are unhappy Ricky lost but this conspiracy theory bullsh*t has to stop. He was outclassed and stopped. I can think of umpteen examples of terrible reffing in big fights.

White fighters had a great year in 07 but Hatton was outclased and stopped. This was the same Joe Cortez who broke Hatton and Castillo up very quickly as well and took a point from Castillo but since Ricky won Cortez was straight apparently.

I think the fact both of them are completely bald is suspicious, I have always mistrusted completely bald men like Yul Brenner, Telly Savalis, and Micheal Jordan!

Bald white guys always are evil men that try and dominate the world. I've watched too many James Bond movies....

This has been an interesting thread. Some humor, anger, and sarcasm all thrown into the hopper. But the questioning of the ref is not something confined to disgruntled Hatton fans alone. No, no, no. A column by a well informed boxing writer touches on the subject.

The fight was very entertaining and was fun to watch. I felt that Hatton was doing everything he needed to to come out with a win, but Mayweather proved a little too fast and too big for him to overcome. I also strongly believe that referee Joe Cortez helped Floyd by constantly breaking them apart AS SOON as the fight went close. This was clearly an advantage to Mayweather. I think he over-refereed this bout and as he and Floyd posed for a picture, the smile on Floyd's face as he looked at Cortez proved to me that Mayweather too had appreciated the referee's actions.

Even Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley commented on the referee's behavior during the fight...

There's an interesting story in the British media. WBC and WBA cruiserweight titleholder David Haye was very critical of the referee, and said Hatton would have had a good chance of winning if he had been permitted to fight on the inside! So there you go, Werewolf - you're being supported by a black man. He said Cortez was doing it because of a unfair, preconceived negative image he had about Hatton being a dirty fighter (Hatton had actually never been deducted a point before in his professional career, so this "dirty fighter" label had been created by the media).

i just saw a replay of the fight. its now clear that the ref was "bent". he over-refereed for the first half of the fight, and this lead directly to the judges giving rounds to mayweather even though he was clearly the inferior boxer. like for example. the one round where mayweather hit hatton in the eye and opened up a cut. theres no way mayweather should of gottencredit for opening that cut.after all, maybe he didntcut hatton, maybe hatton just started bleeding.maybe hehas stigmata and it didnt show up in the pre-fight physical. i agree with doghouseboxing.com, that round should have gone to hatton. its clear he was"the aggressor". the replayclearly shows his eye "agrressively" hittingfloyd's fist. not a bad strategy considering floyds history of handinjuries. but the crooked jews...uh..i mean judges gave the round to mayweather.goddamn them!!!!
smiley7.gif

just kidding guys!! in all seriousness, hattons chances would have been significantly improved if the ref would have allowed him to fight on the inside.......and by "fight on the inside", i mean. hit mayweather with a bat.

does anyone know if Jason Litzau is still fighting? i think thats his name. i saw him on an espn fight years ago, and he looked good but i havent seen the guy recently. is he still boxing? has anyon seen one of his fights recently?

cheers & merry christmas to all..except Joe Cortez

"Over-refereed" is the mildest way to put it. The columnist was being very diplomatic.

It's the honest Black men who often will be the only ones to support you when you try to tell it like it is. Meanwhile, all the little well-trained White boys, like those that you see infesting most of these boxing forums, will be busy doing their mocking and name-calling act. There was a Black guy on one of the old boxing forums who was my ally, too. In fact, the ONLY American boxing announcer of the contemporary crop that I had any respect for was George Foreman, at least until he sold out in order to get his job back (He was fired when he told it like it was when the crooked judges awarded one of their crooked decisions in Byrd vs. Oquendo).

What's with the sarcasm? Your comments are ridiculous. No one is saying that Mayweather didn't fight a good fight- only that the ref may have been over zealous in breaking them apart. Lampley and co. as well as several boxing columnists have concurred with our criticism. There are so many trolls on this board it's becoming a chore to refute all of you. Edited by: Alpha Male

I'm not going to reject the possibility that the referee botched his job
a little (though I still think Mayweather won however you slice it), but
the idea that this photograph proves Hopkins and the referee were
in cahoots is about as credible as saying those souvenier pictures
retired old women on Vegas bus tours take with Chippendale's
dancers prove the old hags are having affairs with the dancers.

Wow, you're throwing the troll word around a bit liberally. I'm
responding to the nature of the post title, which says "a picture is
worth a thousand words."

Perhaps the title should be changed to "a picture is worth a thousand
words but none of them absolute.

The connotation is very clear -- that the referee and fighter were in
league with each other.

Possible, though unlikely.

I simply stated that the picture doesn't support this suggestion, let
alone prove it.

Not a good analogy. I'd be willing to bet it's happened more than once, even in Vegas. Sex tourism among women is a thriving industry.

On the contrary, it supports the suggestion, but does not prove it. Edited by: White Shogun

The picture is not proof. Did anyone conclude so? Is it suggestive? Of course it is SUGGESTIVE. Certainly Mayweather appears unusually happy with the official.
Who embraces officials anyway? That certainly begs the question. What athletes in any sport EMBRACE officials??

Now don't bend over or you'll drop your nuts...
