Since 2005, the Tar Heels have had 9, 8, 5, 7, 4, 5, 4, 3, 6, 8, 10, 6, 4, and 5 white players, with no write-up done in 2013. The team projects to start 5 again this season.

Mack Brown is at the helm in his second stint with the Tar Heels. The team has renewed some enthusiam under Brown after miraculously not getting the death penalty in 2013 for the widespread creation of imaginary classes to put on black players’ transcripts. North Carolina has a history of prodigious white receivers but is unfortunately quite bland at most other positions. The 2021 team returns 18 of 22 starters and will likely be successful, potentially propelling QB Sam Howell into Heisman consideration.

Howell is the story of this team at quarterback. He’s a potential top pick in next year’s draft after a huge 2020 campaign that garnered a sea of awards. Howell apparently has an Asian grandparent, for the record. There is a sophomore black quarterback behind him as well as five-star true freshman Drake Maye, the younger brother of former UNC basketball legend Luke.

Super senior receiver Beau Corrales missed time last year with injury but will play a big role as a target for Howell. Sophomore Justin Olson seems to have worked his way into a rotational role.

At tight end, returning starter Garrett Walston will look to build on last year's 255 receiving yards.

Slim pickings on the defensive side of the ball: senior returning starter Raymond Vohasek is an intriguing prospect on the interior line. He has amassed 44 tackles and 12 TFL in two seasons with UNC. Freak athlete Val Edwards is not projected to see the field as a sophomore.

I like Howell a lot - fun player to watch. He should be the top college QB this season.
