I'll keep the forum updated when I see some form - but apart from 16 year old Riley Day and Ella Nelson (I haven't heard her mentioned yet this season) I have no high expectations.
Jack Hale is inconsistent and very small. He seems to be the same size as when he was 15/16 and has great turnover but needs power. Can he get it? I don't know.
New Zealander James Millar is better than any Aussies at this stage. So I'll certainly include him.
Haven't heard hide nor hair of 10.15 sprinter Joshua Clarke who got injured a year ago and had't improved enough to take his place at the Olympics 6 months later. Maybe he's going to be continually injured.
Melissa Breen is nothing - feuding again with Aths Aust who she feels doesn't appreciate her (I'm on their side - 11.76 in Rio was a joke). She has the snots that they didn't want her in the Nitro Athletics squad just passed. Which is great - it gave the chance for youngster Riley Day to beat them all over 150 on Saturday..

My son-in-law and I WILL be going to the Sydney Track Classic on 25th of this month and since it is a part of the 3 day NSW T&F 2017 championships I may get a 3 day pass. I'll keep my eyes and ears open and report back.
Aust Champs are 4-5 weeks later on the same Sydney track. I'll be at those too and there should be some form showing by then.

actually, I just found out Joshua Clarke IS back and ran his first race of the season on 4th February. Won a 200 in 20.88. So if he is not nursing injury any more he could run a decent 100 in 2/3 more weeks. That would a 3 week block of training since that 20.88 till the NSW champs and a further 4/5 weeks till Nationals.
Fingers, toes crossed for him. He's 180 (5'11) and 85 kgs (187 lbs) so he has filled out nicely. Obviously done lots of other work while giving his hammy time to heal properly.
I'm cheered up somewhat now ;)

Australia's fastest man last year with a near still wind 10.15 before injury. A nice size for a sprinter at 180 cms and 85 kgs. He's also smart and dignified.
He wouldn't accept an Australia ticket to Rio since he felt he was underdone on his comeback and wouldn't do us proud.
This is his 20.88 comeback run from weekend before last

meanwhile down here in the antipodes, at least 2 Aussie men ran legal 10.20s this weekend already.
Trae Williams did a 10.27 while Josh Clark had his first 100 of the season and did 10.22 in a preliminary - didn't run the final so I hope his body held up

Nice early season times for these guys. Both of thees sprinter have a powerful build and good genetics. Hoping for some sub 10.10's this year from several Aussies but I know I'm asking alot.

Any word when Jack Hale will race? I know he is not the ideal build but man can he run. Hoping he like Gemeli and others is just a physical specimen with such great turnover that his lack of height will not be an issue.

Some exciting sprinting and hurdling news from Poland and Germany:
https://www.iaaf.org/news/report/siciarz-world-indoor-record-u20-60m-hurdles

Klaudia Siciarz from Poland, set a World under 20yrs record in the 60m hurdles, 8.17.
Polish sprinter, Ewa Swoboda, also a teenager, ran a very fast 7.15 60m.
German hurdler, Pamela Dutkiewicz, ran the 60m hurdles in 7.79, the fastest time in Europe in 9 yrs.
And a quartet of German women sprinters broke the 7.20 barrier in the 60m - Gina Luckenkemper, 20, won in a lifetime best of 7.14 ahead of Rebekka Haase (7.16), Lisa Mayer (7.18) and Alexandra Burghardt (7.19).

Andy Pozzi continues to dominate the hurdles this indoor season. Today he ran 7.43 to win the 60m hurdles in Birmingham. This make him the seventh fastest European indoor all-time. Plus he has the 3 fastest times in the world this year.

And he starts like a flash for a man his height. Hopefully his injuries are behind him and we'll see another genuine contender at "Worlds"

Just checked the entries for the 60m at the European Indoor Championships.
Great Britain has sent 4 entrants, and 3 of them are white - Richard Kilty, Andrew Robertson, Kyle De Escofet.
These 3 sprinters, along with the 4th entrant from GB, are the only entrants that have run sub 6.60 this season.
So it's conceivable that Kilty, Robertson and De Escoft, could take all the medals in the 60m.
That would be great!

i really would love to see Kyle De Escofet medal. It's his first major champs as an adult. If his injury is healed and he can control his nerves, he just may make the medal stand. It would be a good spring board for the summer season. He is only 21 years of age!

phew! Kilty gets a reprieve. He's gotta hold it together at that start. De Escofet is interesting as a 20 year old - nothing better than 10.45 for 100 yet but he may trash that this year

Robertson and Kilty both qualified in the heats, but De Escofet did not run.
So we're down to two medal possibilities.

Kilty again in season best , after Robertson DQ'd this time.

Slovak Jan Volko motored for 2nd in yet another PB. His PB as of end of last season was 6.82 and now he's high 6.50s - he's just turned 20 in November so new to senior ranks, 75kgs and 179cms tall. What a way to start your senior path.
Will be another one to watch outdoors in the near future

Congrats to Richard Kilty yet again. One of the best indoor sprinters in the history of track & field due to the amount
of major medals he has won. Incredible acheivment yet again. Congrats to the youngster Jan Volko as well. Hopefully he can become the next Matic Osovnikar! He was very good for a long time but this kid may go above and beyond before it's all said and done.

I think Kristoff Hari might have made the medal stand. If not Andrew Robertson would have most likely completed the sweep but it's a great day regardess. I'm so excited about many of these young sprinters from around the globe!

One thing I would really like to see is for Richard Kilty to join the sub 10 club. Like Reuss he has been so close so many times yet it is the one thing that eludes him. He is married and a father now. His wife is a pro track athlete too. Those kids should be amazing some day down the road. With a family now and extra motivation, this summer it should finally happen. No one deserves it more than Kilty. He has worked his butt off and I'm sou proud of the kid. Congrats once again to the "Teaside Tornado".

here is the link to the Euro indoors if anyone wants to look. I've noted many smaller countries are winning events. Romanians, Bulgarians, Slovakians are all in the mix and pushing some bigger nations like France back at these championships. The men's long jump was won by a 23 year old Albanian guy. All these little countries need heroes so it's good to see.

Some thoughts on the 60m Finals....
Great that Kilty got the win. He solidifies his reputation as a great short sprinter who comes through in the clutch.

Jan Volko of Slovakia who took the silver, is a big find!
As Mastermulti mentioned, his best time 60m time last year was 6.80, and today he ran a national record, 6.58. A huge improvement! His best 100m time is 10.33. That should come way down this season.
I watched his final and semi-final races, and I was glad to see that although he wasn't a great starter, he was a good closer. I hope that translates well to the 100m. Also, I have to say, his running style reminded me of Valery Borzov.

Andrew Robertson false started unfortunately, but I'm not sure he would have medaled. He seemed a little off from his recent form.

It's worth noting that the 60m and 6om hurdles were both won by white Brits.
Meanwhile, Sweden, a country with no colonial legacy, had 3 black guys in the 60m finals. Multi-culturalism in full effect up there.

  • I said that same thing to my son. Something about his style reminded me a little of Borzov though not yet as smooth

Another nice surprise was the long jump winner from Albania.
I never heard of him before - Izmir Smajlaj - but he jumped 26' 6" to win the gold.
23 yrs old.

In the womens 60 meters our girls took 2nd and 3rd. Povh took the silver and Swoboda the bronze. They both
had incredible times of 7.10! Povh is 29 but Swoboda is only 19 and is in her first year at the senior level.

I'll probably make the trek to Canberra ACT this coming weekend with weather predicted at 28/29C for both days at 600 metres elevation so a faourable wind would see some potentially good times.
The Summer of Athletics features among other things a very decent 100 field as follows. Avid followers will recognize many of the names; I'm really excited to see some formidable Japanese sprinters there.

MENS OPEN 100m

5 Rohan Browning NSW

6 Joshua Clarke NSW

8 Tom Gamble QLD

9 Jack Hale TAS

10 Shota Hara JPN

11 Alex Hartmann QLD

15 YOSHIHIDE KIRYU JPN

16 Joseph Millar NZL

21 Aaron Stubbs QLD

24 Trae Williams QLD

25 Ryota Yamagata JPN

a great reason for a motor cycle ride with a tent on board

a wind assisted 10.11 for Joseph Millar (nz) on the weekend at sea level. It was a healthy +3.4 but maybe still equates to around a legal 10.20 or so.
He ran well in the Nitro series and seems to have stepped up this season
