2014 U.S. Open

As the 114th U.S. Open begins I would like to start the thread by giving my top 5 of whom I hope wins.

1. Jordan Spieth. 20 yrs. old. If anyone is ever going to chase Jack or Tiger's Majors, they're going to have to get them early and often.
2. Rory McIlroy. Possibly a third Major at 25 years old!
3. Phil Mickelson. Could complete the career slam with his 1st U.S. Open and 6th Major.
4. Adam Scott. A win would go a long way to tightening his hold on number 1.
5. Patrick Reed. I like his confidence.

Nice to see Martin Kaymer leading after the first round at the U.S. Open, shooting the lowest ever U.S. Open Round at Pinehurst (-5). Perhaps he can continue his “comeback seasonâ€￾ by winning his second Major?

I’d like to see either Kaymer, Mickelson, Stenson, or Spieth win the tournament.

The only non-whites in contention after the first round are Asians: Kevin Na (-2), Hideki Matsuyama (-1), and Seung-yul Noh (E). Hopefully they begin to fade away today or Saturday.

Masterful performance by Martin Kaymer, going wire to wire and winning the U.S. Open by a thoroughly dominant 8 strokes. He finished 9 under, with only Ricky Fowler and Erik Compton also under par at -1. Huge congrats to Compton, who has had two heart transplants and at age 34 was playing in just his second major.

Kaymer also went wire to wire at The Players last month. He's only the seventh golfer in the last 40 years to win at least two majors before the age of 30 as he won the PGA in 2010 before going into a slump. Adding The Players (the "fifth major") to his two majors is quite an accomplishment. Martin obviously has the mental toughness to go with the talent; now we'll see if he can keep this level of play, or something reasonably close to it, going.

Kaymer’s fantastic play aside, he exhibited astonishing amounts of class, humility, graciousness, and articulacy in his post-Open interviews. His handle of the English language is impeccable, even for a young German (nearly all Germans born in 80’s, 90’s and 00’s learn English from an early age). Interestingly, the media doesn’t seem to dislike Kaymer in any way. Normally, white men from Germany and the Southern U.S. are the most detested of all. I heard nothing but praise for his play and personality. He’s already equaled the major championship victory total of his legendary mentor, Bernhard Langer, but let’s hope this talented young man raises a few more trophies in the coming years.

Notice the revolting contrast in Kaymer’s “victory celebration” of his dominating victory when compared to Woods’ wild, manic, immature, overanimated, high-pitched, imbecillic celebration of his last (and hopefully final) U.S. Open victory back in 2008…

Another positive from Sunday was that the founder, president, and CEO of the “I Want to Sodomize Tiger Woods Fan Club,” Johnny Miller, will never call a U.S. Open again, as Fox has bought the rights to televising the tournament for the next 13 years...
