here's Prisco's article about his view on 2008 draft, it includes 8 whites in first round: Brohm at number 1, Sam Baker T at number 3 and several others: Laurinaitis, Dan Connor, Chris Long (Howie's kid).

There's a lot of potential for some white superstars next year but what white DBs or WRs will be out there? I know of Blythe and Zbikowski, who else?

It looks like Charlie Weis is turning Notre Dame into "Tight End U" and even though Anthony Fasano was a 2nd round pick in 2006 it looks like Carlson is an even better pro prospect. A great athlete who even saw some action for the Irish basketball team early in his college career, Carlson has ideal size and is coming off a junior season that was as good as any tight end's in the nation. There is a good chance that he will be the top target in the Irish passing game in 2007 and if that is the case look for him to have a terrific senior campaign. He is no Kellen Winslow or Vernon Davis but Carlson may ultimately stack up real well with guys like Todd Heap and Greg Olsen.</TD></TR></T></TABLE>

i added the above emphasis, but how can he measure up with phenomenal athletes who are also top-notch players like Heap and Olsen, but not be as good as the underwhelming duo of winslow and davis? seems to be a very odd comparison. *nudge nudge, wink wink*

this is caste speak at it's most blatant.

exactly... so is it a compliment, because we don't need him to be "as good as" Winslow or Davis (wtf) but i'd love to him to be "only as good" as best TE in the NFL, Todd Heap!

Scott Wright who runs nfldraftcountdown is a pretty big caste whore with his descriptions and his descriptions of white players are very much etched in caste terminology. Winslow and Davis can't hold Heap's jock to this point.

yeah, this site is almost as bad as nfldraftblitz in being a hard core caste proponent.

I figured this was as good as any thread to ask my Draft question.

When was the last time 10+ Whites were drafted in the 1st round?

Double-digit Whites' in the 1st round seems like another Caste barrier that needs to be shattered.

The first day of the draft is very telling. They want people to continue to think of White athletic talent as such a rarity.

1st round of '01 Draft --- 6 Whites

Pick 4 -- DE Justin Smith
11 -- LB Dan Morgan
17 -- G Steve Hutchinson
18 -- OT Jeff Backus
20 -- SS Adam Archuleta
31 -- TE Todd Heap

1st round of '02 Draft --- 5 Whites

Pick 1 -- QB David Carr
3 -- QB Joey Harrington
14 -- TE Jeremy Shockey
29 -- OT Marc Colombo
32 -- QB Patrick Ramsey

I wrote the above because I have it written down on a paper. The first day of the '02 Draft was "won" by black O-Linemen. It was a major push by those aiming to darken NFL O-Lines even further than they already were.

Onto the '07 Draft, I believe it was only 5 Whites again.

(Alphabetical order)
WR Anthony Gonzalez
TE Greg Olsen
QB Brady Quinn
OT Joe Staley
OT Joe Thomas

As for '08 and how the system is operating, I'm not optimistic. I predict 5 or 6 Whites will be taken in the 1st round, AGAIN...

there will be at least 5,6 whites in the first round. Jake Long, Brian Brohm, Sam Baker, Chris Long, Matt Ryan, Dan Connor should all go in first. Laurinaitis and Henne, possibly John Booty will have a good shot as well.

i think 6 is a realistic number. 7 or 8 a possibility.

Is there a White TE that should go in the 1st, but won't? It doesn't have to be a Senior, maybe a Junior?

Jason Witten was the 5th pick in the 3rd round afterall.

Absolute beast, DE Jared Allen was the 30th pick in the 4th round.

BTW, those first 6 guys should be first rounders.

We'll see if they dare take 2 White LB's in the first round; Laurinaitis or maybe someone else.

That is definitely "caste whore speech." Heap and Winslow both run the 40 yard in around 4.6 (as does Jeremy Shockey and Dallas Clark; I believe Witten is 4.7) and Heap certainly is ahead of Winslow in ability at this point in his career. So how does Carlson not measure up to Winslow, but he does to Heap?

It would have made more sense if they said Carlson doesn't quite measure up athletically to Olsen (runs a 4.49) or Vernon Davis (runs a 4.38), but is still a good athlete and a good TE prospect none the less. These sites should hire me as their scout. And there's more to success than athletic measurables; Vernon Davis hasn't become a pass catching star yet! Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Five of the top seven players on theOctober 24thupdate of Mel Kiper's "Big Board" are white -- Jake Long (#2), Matt Ryan (#3), Chris Long (#4), Brian Brohm (#6), and Dan Connor (#7). However the rest of the 25 players listed are all black except for USC OT Sam Baker at #19 and Texas A&amp;M center Cody Wallace, who is #25.

Don,

I think I read somewhere that the last time at least 10 White's were taken in the 1st round was 1991 or '93.

Do you know the year?

Of course, double-digit White's being taken (in the 1st round) is another hurdle to overcome in this "modern" era of football. Edited by: Deadlift

1989,the last year the first round featured a double digit white total. At a quick glance, I count 12 listed below. Interestingly enough, the next year (1990) featured only 2 white first rounders, I believe. That was the year Jeff George went #1.
