The Rams drafted defensive tackle/end Adam Carriker out of Nebraska with their first pick in the 2007 Draft, then followed that up by taking tailback/"fullback" Brian Leonard in the second round. They also signed free agent WR Drew Bennett during the offseason.

Though Carriker would seem to be an almost unstoppable force at end, he is starting at tackle to plug a glaring weakness there.

As for how Leonard and Bennett are used, that remains to be seen. Leonard's career at Rutgers was closely followed by many due to the school's relative proximity to New York City and its sudden rise to prominence. He is a nice-sized running back with good speed, vision and hands who went from being the team's best rushing threat to mostly blocking for tailback Ray Rice his senior season in 2006. Much like Matt Jones two years ago, who the media wanted to annoint a "tight end" rather than a wide receiver, Leonard has struggled with being typecase as a fullback rather than the tailback he obviously is suited to be.

Indications thus far are that Leonard will be used at both fullback and tailback. He may be used to receive more than run, and he is the clear backup to Steven Jackson, a talented workhorse back. With Mike Alstott's career almost certainly over, Leonard now becomes (possibly along with Heath Evans of New England) the only white man in the NFL who may get more than a token carry. The list of talented white running backs who didn't even got a token rush is very long; whether Leonard will eventually be the one to end the NFL's generation long ban on whites being featured runners only time will tell.

Bennett was the number one receiver on the Tennessee Titans the past two seasons; unfortunately the quarterbacks attempting to throw him the ball were washed up Steve McNair in his current dink 'n dunk stage, and scatter-armed (and scatter-brained) Vince Young, which made for pedestrian receiving statistics. Bennett's ability shone through in the second half of 2004 when McNair was injured and Billy Volek played pitch and catch with Bennett as effortlessly as two kids in a pickup game. In several games with Volek at QB, Bennett shot up the receiving charts and ended up second in the AFC among receivers in '04.

At 28, Bennett should be in his prime years. However he is currently listed as the third receiver behind Torry Holt and "highly respected" 34-year-old Isaac Bruce. One can only hope that the Rams utilize the 6'5" Bennett as the weapon he is as there's no reason he can't blow past defensive backfields with Marc Bulger throwing him the ball the same way he did with Volek.

Bulger is finally being recognized for the superb quarterback he is. Bulger can't run around like a deer as soon as he sees a pass rush, all he does is read defenses and make accurate throws. You know, the kind of things quarterbacks were supposed to do before the NFL's ridiculous experiment with "affletes" at the position began.

14-year veteran Gus Frerotte backs up Bulger.

There are three white starters on the o-line: RG Richie Incognito, C Brett Romberg, and LG Mark Setterstrom. All are young players in their fourth season or less. 14 year man Andy McCollum is still around as a backup, as is Adam Goldberg.

Second year tight end Joe Klopfenstein is now listed as the backup to newly acquired Randy McMichael. Aaron Walker is also a backup at TE.

Veteran Dane Looker remains on the team as a wide receiver, but last year during head coach Scott Linehan's first season was used solely as the holder on kicks and as a White Special Teams Demon. Looker has hands of glue but in a league that clearly values hands of stone more as long as those hands are black, is not likely to be on the field much as a receiver.

Carriker is the only white starter on defense. SLB Brandon Chillar is of American Indian descent. Tim McGarigle, in his second season, is the second string middle linebacker.

Safety Todd Johnson was signed in the offseason as a backup.

NUMBER OF WHITE STARTERS: 5

APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF WHITE PLAYERS ON 53 MAN ROSTER: 18

GRADE: D

In several games with Volek at QB, Bennett shot up the receiving charts and ended up second in the AFC among receivers in '04.

And both of those guys end up traded. The Titans couldn't afford a quarterback controversy with Young in town. Is Volek even a backup now?

I was hoping the Rams (recently a very fair team to white players) would start 9 or 10. Very disappointing.

The injury prone Orlando Pace is over-rated, but the two sumos the Rams have starting now at offensive tackle are terrible. Bulger's getting no protection and the run blocking is bad and the offense stinks so far. Could be a long season in St. Louis.

If I'm not mistaken Steven Jackson only averaged around 3.0 yards per carry. THat's awful. How much was it him sucking and how much of it was the Sumos on the O-Line?

I think a lot of it is the line. Plus Bulger is all beat up, he played Sunday with two cracked ribs and a sore knee. Right now they have the look of a team that's on the verge of having a terrible season unless they right the ship quickly. It would be great if Leonard can be instrumental in a turnaround; if he can average even4.0 yards or better running the ball during his time as the starter that would be outstanding.

This is the first time since Brock Forsey in 2003 that a real white RB will be starting as the featured runner. Heath Evans did it in 2005 as a FB.

Profootballtalk.com reports that Marc Bulger will be benched in favor of Gus Frerotte this week.

It makes a lot of sense. Bulger just signed a long-term deal and he needs the organization to save him from himself. Presumably, he can get healthy and return a better player while Frerotte tries to improve the offense in the short-term. Scott Linehan is also reportedly demoting offensive coordinator Greg Olsen. Frerotte makes a fine pickup, while we'd hold on to Bulger until more news is known.

Drew Bennett will finally start this week as Isaac Bruce will be out with a hamstring injury.

Another jumbo gone, this time a backup LG.
HOUSTON (AP) â€â€￾ The St. Louis Rams on Tuesday released offensive lineman Claude Terrell following his arrest for allegedly assaulting his wife at a suburban Houston hotel.
The Rams announced Terrell's release in a brief news release. A spokesman declined further comment.

Terrell was arrested early Tuesday. Police in the Houston suburb of Webster said they found a woman with "obvious signs of physical injury" after responding to a disturbance at a Hampton Inn. The woman, who said she was Terrell's wife, told police he had assaulted her.

Terrell was found at another nearby hotel, where he was arrested and charged with assault-family violence, a class A misdemeanor, according to police.

The 6-foot-2, 330-pound Terrell has appeared in six games with three starts for the winless Rams this season.

Terrell was already on probation from a 2006 assault causing bodily injury to a family member charge, according to court records. He was given a $1,000 fine and two years probation for that charge in February.

The 25-year-old was taken in the fourth round of the 2005 draft by the Rams out of New Mexico. He started 10 games as a rookie but missed all of last season with a wrist injury.

The Rams did not immediately announce who would fill the roster spot. The Rams (0-7) host Cleveland Sunday.

Snippet from an article I found about Jackson's likely return this week.

Rookie Brian Leonard has had the bulk of work at running back in Jackson's absence. But he hasn't lived up to the numbers Jackson put up last season, when he led the NFL with 2,334 combined rushing and receiving yards.

I'm speechless!

Don't worry, Jackson is black, when things aren't going his way, which they won't, he will fold up like a chair after a hotel convention. Leonard will get another shot this season, its just a matter of when.

Peter King, SI columnist/analyst, has the Rams picked to beet the Browns this weekend. His quote:

"This Ram team has the feel of a sinking ship, while the Browns are headed in the right direction, rested, coming off a win and a bye, with a quarterback, Derek Anderson, who can throw for 350 yards on any given Sunday. But sometimes veteran teams get mad as hell, rise up and are sick of being embarrassed. Marc Bulger and Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt will do that this week, and rookie runner Brian Leonard will help."

Rams 27, Browns 20

Brian has done more with less than Jackson did. the o-line, quarterbacks and receiving corps all got even MORE injured and STILL he put up better numbers.

without a doubt, he should be given more touches. that he isn't getting them, makes you scratch your head.

FOX gimp network gimped Bennet yesterday. Bennet let a catchable ball thru his hands for an int, and after the play gave him a closeup and a smackdown from Moose. Later in the game a pass went off Bruce (I think) for an int, no closeup, no smackdown. Other than that it looked like Bennet had a good game, but since that team sucks all around I'm sure the brothas are looking for the white scape goat to sacrifice and the gimps are reaching for the grease.

I remember before the season started, a lot of us were looking forward to following the Rams. But Linehan turned out to be no different than the rest, minimizing the roles of Bennett and Leonard. To not be using Bennett, a proven deep threat,as the number two receiver and Bruce as the slot receiver is so ridiculous as to not need any comment. As for Leonard, I see a weight gain over the offseason as he isfully transitionedintoa fullback. Turns out senile old Dick Vermeil was right after all. . .

Linehan is a lame duck. If they retread Haslett its over for Brian. There are fewer good head coaches than good starting quarterbacks, and to tell you the truth I think only Belechek is top of the line. Only he can put in a white running back to score a td without the brothas going on strike.

From this week's Sporting News: "There were indications WR Isaac Bruce, 35, might be released, but now it looks like he may be demoted to the No. 3 role. If so, who's No. 2? Drew Bennett certainly hasn't shown he can handle that role. Expect the Rams to look for receiving help in free agency and the draft."
