STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback Josh Riddell (white) tore an anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during Saturday's loss to South Carolina and is out for the rest of the season.

Bulldogs athletic department spokesman Mike Nemeth said Sunday that Riddell will have surgery, probably next week. Riddell was 9-of-21 for 101 yards and an interception before leaving the game. South Carolina won 38-21.

The injury puts the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-2 Southeastern Conference) down two quarterbacks. Starter Michael Henig (white) broke his hand during Mississippi State's 24-16 win over Auburn on Sept. 15.

Riddell had been splitting playing time with Wesley Carroll (white), a freshman, who is expected to take over behind center at least until Henig returns in several weeks. His backup will likely be another freshman, Chris Relf (black).

Unfortunately for coach Sylvester Croom, this is familiar territory.

Last year about this time, Henig was out with a broken collarbone, backup Omarr Conner (black) was out with a severe right groin strain and Tray Rutland (black) was out with a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee.

The Bulldogs play UAB at home Saturday.

Nick Turner, who played tailback and was a record-setting return specialist for the Mississippi State football team in 2002-03, was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder in DeKalb County, Ga.Turner, 24, is alleged to have facilitated a drug deal that went bad and cost the life of Dermonde Broadus, according to J.T. Ware, a public information officer with the DeKalb police. Ware said Turner is cooperating with the investigation.

Turner signed with Mississippi State in 2002 out of Atlanta but was dismissed in February of 2004 by then new coach Sylvester Croom.

Turner was a Parade All-American out of Washington High, considered one of the top prep running backs in the nation. His freshman season in 2002 was cut short by injury and then an arrest. He was suspended for the final five games by then coach Jackie Sherrill after he was charged with passing five counterfeit $100 bills at a Starkville nightclub.

Turner received three years probation and rejoined the team for the 2003 season. He finished his career at Murray State.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Two Mississippi State players have been kicked off the team and dismissed from the university after their arrests Thursday night.

In a statement Friday, the university said that the dismissals of starting left tackle Michael Brown and backup defensive tackle Quinton Wesley are pending a campus judicial hearing.

The two were arrested in what was described in the statement as a "campus incident involving two handguns."

No one was injured and Dean of Students Mike White said in the statement there was no threat to other students.

Police recovered the guns and charged Brown with possession of a firearm and Wesley with aggravated assault, both felonies. It is against state law to carry a firearm onto a college campus. White said additional charges are being considered.

A spokesman said coach Sylvester Croom had no comment until he learned more about what happened. A Mississippi State police department employee referred questions to the university and White did not immediately return a phone message left Friday night.

News of the dismissals came on the eve of Mississippi State's spring game.

Brown was Mississippi State's best offensive lineman and key to the Bulldogs' punishing running game last season. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound junior from College Park, Ga., had started 18 of 19 games he'd been eligible for since transferring from Florida. He is featured on the cover of Mississippi State's spring media guide.

Brown was an honorable mention pick on The Associated Press' All-Southeastern Conference team after last season.

Wesley, a 6-4, 315-pound sophomore backup left defensive tackle from Atlanta, has played in 21 games with one start, 19 tackles and one forced fumble. He was expected to receive significant playing time in the defensive line rotation next season and was listed on the spring depth chart behind starter Kyle Love.
