100 Meter Training

Does anybody here know of any good books or programs for short distance sprinting. I've heard great things about Charlie Francis' work but "Training for Speed" seems only to be available on his website (as an e-book) and I've seen reviews that complained they paid for it and it never came.

Thanks for the link, Alpha...good stuff on there.

Charlie Francis was a Canadian sprint coach who worked with Ben Johnson when he broke the world record in '88. Johnson tested positive for steroids and, apparently, Francis was guiding him with his usage. He's written several books on sprinting, one of which really gets into the idea that, basically, all elite level sprinters are using a lot of PEDs and that it would be all but impossible to compete at this level naturally.

Looking at Charlie180's website, I don't imagine its the same guy. Also, Charlie180's arguments were weak and untenable. I take Francis to be more intelligent than this and don't see why he would have a vested interest in promoting those ideas. MapleLeaf may be right though. I haven't actually read Francis' books yet and can't say whether his ideas are anything special or if he's just celebrated because of the Johnson scandal.

I'm curious to know though. Hopefully MapleLeaf can chime in.

Charlie180 certainly had a lot of knowledge of sprinters. I assumed when he didn't respond to Maple Leaf calling him Charlie Francis that he was admitting it by not denying it. But you could be right that they're not the same person.

I cannot confirm nor deny that the poster Charlie 180 is the culprit. The writing sounded familiar and having a blog in Charlie's name, while suggestive, is, of course, not proof. Charlie Francis has written in newspapers before, on the web, and his books may also be used to compare posts and draw conclusions from and the real Charlie Francis does have a website: charliefrancis.com. When the poster, charlie 180, did not respond, as Don Wassal mentioned, I thought it was him. As you all know, this site is watched and read and known though many will not admit it. But ultimately I do not know. To my knowledge Charlie Francis has never made the claims that charlie 180 has but one never knows what lurks in these people's heads. Charlie's Space gives me the impression of someone who is a white conservative but his comments here at CF, especially his forthright refusal to consider other arguements, suggests to me that he is someone with a pro-black mindset. I would commend all of the CF posters who took him to task and blew holes into charlie 180's arguement and he with his cultural marxist mindset were left frustrated. You all had more patience than I had.

Charlie180 is NOT Charlie Francis.

Charlie Francis is very knowledgeable; and, in a way, brutally honest about the whole sprint scene. He also seems to be fairly adept at marketing, and so it can be difficult to know what to take seriously, and what is marketing hype.

As an example, Francis was using EMS (those electronic muscle simulators) when everyone else was considering it to be quackery for softies who were too lazy to work. But Francis considered that the EMS could activate the muscles directly, without issues of motivation --- and, of big importance for a caucasian sprinter, without involving the endurance system. I think he may have also endorsed a particular EMS product, but that is where his marketing tricks come into play, and I don't know enough to say whether his endorsements are on the same level as his knowledge.
