    2011 Rice Owls

Andy Erickson will NOT be returning kicks for Rice this year. He has transferred to Texas State and Coach Bailiff has still not given him his release. Off. lineman Cade Shaw has also transferred to Texas A&M Kingsville. Look for more transfers in the future.

    Sam McGuffie

Yes. He was the starter at the beginning of the season but was injured in the second game. He tried to come back a few weeks later and reinjured his shoulder. He now has a clean bill of health and will be the non-wildcat QB as long as he is healthy.

The Rice coaches are really just figuring out how to best use Sam. They do know he is the focal point of our offense and will be until he is gone. They want to use plays and sets where Sam isn't mobbed at the line of scrimmage every play and the offense used against ECU yesterday was a great...

Do not worry about Sam getting less carries as a result of any punishments for mistakes. Coach Bailiff has repeatedly reiterated the need to get the ball into Sam's hands. Sam reminds me of an Indy car in rush hour traffic. Plenty of speed and horsepower, but no room to go. Everyone close to the...

Sam is an electric runner who just happened to learn the hard way about a disciplined defense and containment assignments. That won't be the case all season with CUSA defenses. He has been trying too hard so far and the play calling and o-line play has not been to his benefit. He needs to be...

Sam will do well here at Rice. He loves it here and we love having him.
