Liked them last year, no reason to root for them this year.

It could be worse! Perriloux, at least is gone. But the drunk white experts will call for Jordan Jefferson if Lee and/or Hatch start slow.

LB Jacob Cutrera may not start, but will play a significant number of defensive snaps, as well as special teams.

I'm hoping OT Josh Dworaczyk and DE Will Blackwell get some action.

True frosh, OL Clay Spencer, is a physical specimen and could make noise in the near future.

Indeed. Back to SEC football the way it's always been, boring and offensive. (offensive to anyone with a sense of pride, that is.)

Was fun for that two year run to watch Hester, Tebow and the Arkansas kid, forgot his name

Richard Dickson figures to have a big year, not only because he is a proven go-to guy, but also because the Tigers have no experience at QB. Dickson will be a reliable, safe option.

Dickson has big shoes to fill as No. 18

August 6, 2008

BATON ROUGE â€â€￾ Tight end Richard Dickson is sure his number change will not bring any bad luck.

Dickson has traded his No. 82 for No. 18, which is what tailback Jacob Hester wore last season. Hester led the Tigers in rushing with 1,103 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2007 and was vital in LSU's national championship run. He was then drafted in the third round of the NFL Draft to San Diego.

Before Hester, quarterback Matt Mauck wore No. 18 at LSU and helped take the 2003 Tigers to the national title.

"The number 18 is a special number here at LSU," Dickson said. "Look at the guys who've worn it. Matt Mauck won the national championship. Jacob Hester was a great player here. I hope I can fill the shoes they had by wearing No. 18."

No. 18 is low for a tight end, though.

"It's confusing a little bit," Dickson said. "I walk by the mirrors and don't really know what's going on. I don't feel like myself, but I'm starting to get used to it. I'm thinking about playing quarterback, but I don't think coach Miles would let me do that."

Dickson is a native of Ocean Springs, Miss. The No. 18 has special significance at that state's flagship institution as well. All-American quarterback Archie Manning wore No. 18 for Ole Miss from 1968-70.

No. 82 was not exactly bad luck for Dickson last season. He was fourth on the team in receptions with 32 for 375 yards and caught five touchdowns, including a 13-yard touchdown against Ohio State to tie the national championship game 10-10 in the second quarter. The 32 catches is No. 3 in LSU history by a tight end.Edited by: Deus Vult

Dickson won't go unnoticed in LSU offense

LSU football trivia for $100, Alex: Who was the only LSU Tiger to score two touchdowns in the BCS National Championship Game?
Jacob Hester? Strike one.

Early Doucet? Sorry.

Who had tight end Richard Dickson?

Certainly not the Ohio State defense, which got suckered in by LSU's diamond-shaped receiver formation on the right side of the line.

The Buckeyes left Dickson wide open on the other side as he loped into the end zone with the Tigers' first touchdown, a 13-yard pass that tied the score 10-10 and sent LSU on to a 38-24 romp.

Dickson won't go so unnoticed this season.

With seniors Keith Zinger (now with the Atlanta Falcons) and Mit Cole now departed, LSU's experience deficit at tight end isn't as acute as it is at quarterback â€â€￾ but it's hardly a comfort zone.

Dickson (6-foot-3, 246 pounds) knows he'll be expected to lead â€â€￾ and produce â€â€￾ in his junior season.

"I know I need to perform well," Dickson said.

"I wouldn't call it a burden. I'm confident if anything happens to me they're talented guys behind me. They've come a long way through spring and fall camp."

LSU has one senior at tight end, squad member Caleb Angelle, but he mostly plays on special teams.

Mitch Joseph (6-5, 243), a redshirt freshman from Catholic-New Iberia, is considered Dickson's primary backup. Then there's true freshman Tyler Edwards (6-3, 240), a member of the ESPN.com top 150 this year.

The Ouachita High School graduate is the younger brother of former Tigers tight end Eric Edwards, a starter on LSU's 2003 national championship team.

"I think Mitch Joseph is a quality guy behind him (Dickson)," LSU coach Les Miles said. "Tyler Edwards has got to get some work. But I think we'll be OK there."

Eric Edwards was a four-year letterwinner at LSU, but few tight ends ever had a more productive season in the purple-and-gold than Dickson did in 2007.

As a sophomore, Dickson ranked fourth on the team with 32 receptions, two off the school record for tight ends shared by Malcolm Scott (1981) and Mitch Andrews (1985).

He tied the tight end touchdown record with five, set by Brad Boyd in 1972 and equaled by Robert Royal in 2000.

Dickson said he is confident the tight ends can be as much a part of the offense in 2008 as they were last year as receivers and blockers in single-, double- and triple-tight end sets.

"We won't go away from that," Dickson said. "We don't have the pure blocking tight ends this year, so I have to come out and block and when we throw the ball I have to catch it."

A second-team All-Southeastern Conference pick in 2006, Dickson might be the SEC's best returning tight end now that Florida's Cornelius Ingram has been lost with a season-ending knee injury.

Dickson is embracing the role of being one of the Tigers' elder statesmen now that he's a junior. In the offseason he made the point of trying to help LSU's inexperienced quarterbacks get up to speed.

"They know the plays but not so much what goes into each play," Dickson said, "the types of coverages. If we made a mistake, we'll tell them. They're fast learners."

The Tigers, who take a No. 7 AP and No. 6 coaches' poll ranking into their Aug. 30 opener with Appalachian State (4 p.m., ESPN), will have to quickly get geared up on offense to handle teams like Auburn, Florida and Georgia down the road.

Dickson said they'll be ready.

"I feel we have just as talented an offense as any in the country," he said.

That may certainly be true for LSU's starting tight end.

<H3>LSU holding off on naming QB starter for opener</H3>Associated Press

<DIV =gray_dots>Updated: August 26, 2008, 11:10 AM EST

All signs point to Harvard transfer Andrew Hatch starting LSU's season opener on Saturday against Appalachian State, but head coach Les Miles is not ready to commit to that yet.

"Our quarterbacks â€â€￾ I have great confidence in all three of them, to be honest with you, and I can't tell you today who'll take the field first," Miles said Monday. "I can tell you I'll be comfortable with whoever that is."

<?:NAMESPACE PREFIX = FSTL /><FSTL:EDGEINCLUDE source="/name/public/Topstories"></FSTL:EDGEINCLUDE>

Hatch, technically entering his second sophomore season after getting medical redshirt for a shoulder injury last year, is the most experienced quarterback on LSU's roster â€â€￾ and he's only thrown two passes for the Tigers.

His lone appearance came in mop-up duty for LSU during a blowout of Middle Tennessee early last season.

Neither of LSU's other two quarterbacks, redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee and true freshman Jordan Jefferson, has taken a snap in a game.

Miles and offensive coordinator Gary Crowton like what they've seen from Jefferson, who has quick feet, throws hard, and seems to have the best all-around athleticism of the three quarterbacks. However, he is not only untested, but also has been practicing with LSU for only a few weeks.

Miles said Hatch and Lee are competing for the majority of snaps. They were with the Tigers during last season's national championship campaign and shared all the snaps during spring practice.

However, Lee missed practice and LSU's last preseason scrimmage last week because of back spasms, giving Hatch the inside track to the starting nod.

Miles said Lee's back is fine now and that he would announce a starter later in the week.

"His back is not an issue at this time," Miles said. "I would not be surprised if all three (quarterbacks) played at certain times."

Hatch, who hasn't played regularly since he was with Harvard's JV team as a true freshman in 2005, showed no sign of feeling snubbed by not being named the starter yet, even though he took the majority of first-team snaps while Lee was out.

"Whatever the coach thinks is best, we trust Coach Miles completely in our preparation," Hatch said. "However he's going to handle it I'm sure will be best for the team, and on an individual basis, I'm just focusing on my job and working hard each day."

Miles said he isn't sure if or when he'd name a clear No. 1 quarterback.

LSU's first three games are at home against non-conference opponents that will come in as underdogs. Those games could potentially serve as tryouts to see if one quarterback stands out in game situations.

"I'm not going to make a decision on the season based on two-a-day camp," Miles said. "Obviously, the guys that play best on Saturdays - those are the guys that will get more time."

Nope Ground, the only news I have to reportis that LB Jacob Cutrera has started a couple of the four game so far. He is actually tied for 5th on the team in tackles, so he's seeing the field quite a bit.

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU backup quarterback Andrew Hatch is trying to recover from a leg injury and it is unclear how much action he may miss.

"We are trying to get him back on the field as soon as possible," LSU head coach Les Miles said Tuesday night. "Right now, we are just taking it day by day."

Hatch was injured in LSU's game against Georgia on Saturday.

Hatch, a redshirt sophomore, started LSU's first three games, but was sidelined by a concussion in the Tigers' third game at Auburn and redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee has started since.

Still, Hatch has routinely played in a platoon system since his return from the concussion. He has played in six of LSU's seven games this season, passing for 282 yards and a pair of scores. He also has 129 yards and two touchdowns rushing.

LSU's next game is at home this Saturday night against Tulane.

The future appears dark for the Tigers from Baton Rouge. Les Miles' 2009 class recruits consists of 19 blacks, 5 whites, and 1 mulatto.
