Also Roy Nelson wins the IFL heavyweight title Knocking out the brazilian guy. Ben Rothwell would have won it if not for contract problems kepping him out f he competition.

Quote of the night:

"I have already beaten the Alaskan Assassin, the African Assassin, how many assassins are left?" - Lyoto Machida.

Question of the night:

Why did the UFC put Sanchez v Pelelei on the main card? And the third fight of the night at that? I know why I think so: reaching out to the Hispanic market. There were much better fighters on the undercard in non-televised bouts than Sanchez, so I can't see any other reason why they would do it.

Worst ref move of the night:

Standing up Machida just as he sunk an arm choke on Sokoudjou. It was the exact same submission Machida would use later in the fight to submit Sokoudjou. Everyone at my house started yelling at the TV. Unbelievable.

Gotta love Wanderlei Silva. Still one of my favorite fighters.

Forrest Griffin will beat Rampage, Chuck, and Silva now. He has a better ground game than all three of them, and I think as good as if not a better chin (KO by Jardine was from a knee.)

How did Chuck manage to beat Silva? He must have some gas left in his tank. Seems like most fans expected him to take a beating from Wanderlei.

Superior reach and harder punches. Silva usually wins by strike volume, Chuck wins by strike power. Chuck ran out of gas but by the time that happened he had already rocked Silva a few times. I got the impression that Silva fought most of the second and all of the third somewhat punch drunk.

The problem for a fighter who is stunned or behind on points facing Chuck Liddell is that they have to go after Chuck and chase him down and press the action. This of course also plays into Chuck's greatest attribute - counter punching. Rampage was able to KO Chuck because he made Chuck come after him.

Liddell also took Silva down 2-3 times in the third round. This was unexpected and had more to do with Chuck's being gassed than any desire to submit or ground and pound Silva.

I forgot to mention that in the pre-fight 'text' poll, 60% of the fans picked Chuck to win the fight. Edited by: White Shogun

I enjoyed seeing Clementi taunting Guillard after he choked the sh*t out of him. I am usually not one who appreciates watching one fighter humiliate another one after defeat. However, Guillard has a big mouth and would undoubtably do the same if the roles were reversed. Did anyone else notice Guillard trying to start a fight with Clementi after he was already tapped out?

This was a very bad UFC for all of the "explosive, gifted athletes"
1) Guillard gets choked senseless.
2) Soukajuo Gets manhandled.
And the search for the great black hope continues..............Edited by: aussieaussie31

Yeah I noticed that too. Funny, we see blacks standing over and humiliating defeated competitors all the time but Clementi does it for a split second and Melvin has a fit. What a bunch of hypocrits.

I am glad to see the Iceman back and ready to go for another title run. I agree with Shogun's contention that Forest Griffin is the best light heavyweight and would love to see him be the one that takes out Rashad and Rampage. I was saddened by GSP's complete domination of Hughes and obviously this is just a bad matchup for him. So long Melvin, it's back to the minor league cage fighting for you.

79 was a good show, but there's no need to start up yet again with this absolutely ridiculous "great black hope" stuff when black fighters have belts.

Sorry, but it's just plain stupid.

I wonder how many new fans even know that UFC 1 was almost 50% black and that the first black champion had a belt all the way back in 1997.

Hughes is in a peculiar position. He won't ever beat GSP again. Hughes himself pointed out that GSP is young and will be around a long time. What can Hughes do? He can't make 155, and he'd be too small at 185. Is one of the world's greatest mixed martial artist champions of all time relegated to playing the role of gate keeper? Hughes' post-fight comments showed that he realizes his predicament, which is very similar to that of Rich Franklin. Franklin will never fight for the title again (or shouldn't) until someone else takes it away from Silva.

The only way I see Hughes fighting for the title again is if Serra somehow beats GSP.

I know many fighters battle away on the lower rungs of the various leagues for money, as a career, for fun, etc. But what else is left for Hughes? He has money, fame, storied history.. can a guy who has been at the top for so long stick around on the second tier just to fight? There are plenty of matches I'd still like to see for Hughes - Koscheck, Diego Sanchez, BJ Penn, Jon Fitch, Karo Parisyan, good fights that would sell PPV as well I think.

Can't wait to see what happens!

Hughes/Koscheck, Hughes/Sanchez and Hughes/Parisyan would all be fights I would like to see. I am not one that always feels a former champion should always go out on top. Hughes still has mad game and someone will take out GSP eventually for him. He shouldn't have to retire just because he couldn't get over the GSP hump. Couture is doing just fine now despite his two lackluster losses to Liddell and he is still seen by many as being the baddest man on the planet. All due respect to the largely inactive and below the UFC radar Fedor, of course.

I didn't see the fight, but it sounds like Chuck could have a difficult time late in a 5-round fight.

Liddell also took Silva down 2-3 times in the third round.

I want to see that!

I agree. They have two champs in Silva and Jackson. No need for a "hope." It's the same thing with boxing, where people still use the term "great white hope," as if we need one in that sport. Nope!

Now, the running back position in the NFL, on the other hand....

I also do not believe the UFC / MMA 'wants' an all black or mostly black corps of fighters, unlike the NFL and the NBA and their desire to have nearly coal-black leagues. I do however believe the UFC wants to market black and Hispanic fighters in order to gain more viewers in those demographics. But they won't do it 100% to the exclusion of whites, Asians, or Brazilians, for sure.

There are many white Champions that are currently boxing. However, the term great white hope is still occasionally used from time to time by both fans, and certain sports casters alike. And no Nevada, I am not a new fan of the UFC. You seem to be ever so touchy when commenting on Africant's.Edited by: aussieaussie31

A short list of posts from Nevada include.

A)"Too bad he's a caught and admitted drug using loser.

The double standard continues." This statement was made in regards to Nevada being offended because a white man (Marius Pudzianowski)won the strongest man competition for a fourth consecutive year.

Nevada from the thread cultural genetics

Well, Chagaev is half asian, so I would agree that he's probably not a plain old white guy. Of course on this board he is just plain white, where anybody who is half white is just plain white unless the other half is black, then they are just plain black and we hope that they get injured, lose, and fail.

I don't talk about it though because that topic always goes straight downhill into a big argument about who is white, should we root for half white athletes, how to handle half white half black athletes versus half white half non-black athletes, et cetera.

Slavs are just plain white though. I think there were a few groups in Finland that were proven to be part asian, but I don't know of any research that shows the slavs in eastern europe are not europeans."

WOW! So what I take from Nevada on this senseless post is that A) he has met Chagaev's parents and knows that one is asian. B) All caste football posters wish failure and injury on all black athletes.

The more I read your posts, the more foolishness, and inconsistency I see.

I went on sherdog. Royce Gracie won the first UFC, and of the three black guys on the card non of them came out with a victory.

Gullard got what he deserved for flipping him off before the fight. Clementi also beat Gullard in a grapling match a few years ago.

I think Hughes should move up to middleweight for a one fight deal with Anderson Silva. Hughes could very well win that fight and then retire.

I gotta disagree with you on this one, dkr. I think Silva would KO Hughes. He is too big, has too much of a reach advantage, and pinpoint, powerful strikes.

Do you guys think it's cause Georges is so good, or that Matt is past his prime?

A bit of both, I think. I believe Georges is an outstanding fighter, well rounded in all areas, while Hughes is a great wrestler who has passed his prime years. There are still plenty of guys he can beat at welterweight, but I don't think he will ever beat Georges again.

White Shogun, I understand what your saying. However, I believe if Hughes could avoid the initial onslaught and get Silva down (like Lutter did) he could introduce him to a flurry of punches/elbows from cross side (like he did to Penn)and get the fight stopped via TKO. Hughes has a real talent for damage from side control. Anyway, we'll probably never know.

Yeah, if Matt could get him down I see how the fight could go as you describe. But man, with their height differential a Muay Thai clinch would be brutal!

I think there are more options from side control than mount, and Hughes has mastered that position like nobody else in the business.

But yeah, we'll probably never know.

So you see then, that there were lots of black guys in the sport from day 1. Next you can go to sherdog again and review the results of UFC 14, where you will learn that UFC had it's first black champion over 10 years ago.

So contrary to the sentiment around here that black athletes are new to this sport, they are really just like any other athletes in the game. It is, in fact, guys like aussie who are new to the sport, not black athletes.

The attitude from some of the posters on this board, that blacks are not welcome in the sport at all, and how dare they even step in octagon, as if this were 1947 and Robinson was stepping on the diamond for the first time, is totally disturbing to me. Stuff like that is not why I decided to participate at Castefootball. Rooting for every single black fighter to fail, talking as if they have no business participating in the sport whatsoever, and complaining when any black fighter wins a match, is a huge letdown.
