The only white Canadian female sprinter who has succeeded on the International scene lately is Sage Watson, her times in the 400m and 400mh are the best in Canada but mid level interntionally. White kids are dissuaded very an early age in track&field in Canada, it is such a shame, as a former youth coach and competitive Masters aged sprinter it sickens me to see this happening.
I would say that is bit harsh on Watson as she made two world finals in the 400m hurldes, last season was a poor year for her but she qualified for the Olympics. We shall see if that's a sign she's fading or it was an off year due to the upside down training schedules due to gyms and facilities being closed or limited due to the pandemic.

But she is the only recent woman who hasn't been consistent at the world level. The rest have been as I stated above.

I am not being harsh on Sage Watson, I said she is the fastest in Canada and mid level international, what I meant is she is midlevel of the the top 15 internationally, my mistake as it was it was very early in the morning here when I wrote the post. I met Watson when she was a youth competitor at various track meets in Alberta that my kids attended. As an athlete I admire her as she has a very high desire and fire to compete. Yes the last few seasons she has battled injuries and is rounding back to form well but she needs another 1-1.5 seconds in the 400mh to be top 3 at the big meets against the top 10. Is she capable? I think she can make a go of it but she is not a youngster(27, same age as my daughter) so she has limited time to achieve those rarified times. She is also a beautiful woman and makes many of her competitors look plain.

I remember Purnell well and had often wondered what happened to her, she was a burner....thanks for the update.

A name I had never heard, Chris Mitrevski, ran a wind aided 10.21 (2.5w) in Australia.
That's pretty impressive, given that 1/ he's a long jumper, 2/ he hasn't run a 100m in several years, and 3/ it's very early in the season.

I'm curious to see if he will run more 100m races, and how much he might improve in the Long Jump.

yes, Chris has been a good all around athlete for years. I saw him just shy of 8.00m in Canberra in 2017 at age 20 (didn't get too many on the board as I recall).
He has broken 8 metres in 3 of 4 years since but needs that extra foot to be elite class. Like you say Jack, his extra speed could be the solution.
Personally I think all long jumpers would benefit from racing 60s - then re-calculating their long jump run-ups to suit the extra speed.

I didn't think he was potentially as fast as 10.21 shows. Maybe like others that weird 2020/21 season gave him a chance to do some mixed training he wouldn't have done otherwise.
Anyway, that's 2 guys (he and Aiden Murphy) who may get to legal 10.20s this coming season and strengthen our basic relay squad or even do better.
Jack Hale, Jake Doran et al had better find a new lease of life this season or get swamped.
Chris is a rangy 6'2" so I'll watch his starts this season to see how he gets away

I enjoyed this immensely, the vid and the message. Making the best of what you have! No human has ever reached the 60 metre line that quickly. Imagine Su racing NFL guys over 40 yards
I know you guys will enjoy it too

This was incredible. I will probably watch it again as I love everything sprinting. I love all track & field but the sprints is the ultimate for me! Thanks
for posting this. Su Bingtian is just an amazing sprinter. Every muscle in his body is fast twitch! His length of his career and all his records are inspiring.

I've never heard of Grandine - not too fast but perhaps young. The name sounds like something from the Beverly Hillbillies.
UPDATE: here is an article about those results.
https://www.athleticsessendon.org.au/oh-what-a-night/

Essendon is a nice track club in Melbourne with much history. You'll see the winners in the sprints had no opposition to get those PB times.
Ilana Grandine is actually 30 but didn't start track till she was 28. Her 3 year progression is 12.26 to 12.06 to 11.70 (0.0 wind) so that bodes well for her if her legs are relatively fresh into training (she was probably good at something else before). I'll certainly have an interest into her progress this year.

Jake Penny is 25 and coming along nicely now. I can'r see any spectacular further improvement but who knows? If he can get to a consistent high 10 teens then , along with Browning, Murphy, Mitrevski, and Hale and Doran (if they can get their acts together) a squad of 6 with decent relay preparation should be in the mix to go just sub 38 in the 4x100m.
Our 26 year old 4x100 38.17 record was achieved with one 10.13 guy and three low 10.20s guys. That put us at 8th 4x100 nation in history at the time.
Nowhere now!

performance of the day here in Australia. 16 year old Torrie Lewis today ran 11.33 legal.
She joins Raelene Boyle (number 11) in the world under 18 all-time top 30 and number 3 this year, breaking Sally Pearson's State record

That is really flying for someone that young. It's funny with sprinting as sometimes you fizzle out and peak very young while others develop over 5 to 10 years.
We will see how she does in the future but that's a record I doubt she will lose for a very long time. So fast and so young.

Conor Diffey sets a new PB, trimming 1/100 second off his September time of 20.73 +1.4.

Jacob Despard also a new PB and first time under 21 with a previous PB of 21.26 +1.7 from 2019. Jalen Rucker carves 2 tenths off his 21.28 -0.8 from 3 weeks ago. Oscar Miers gets a legit time beating his only other run of 21.55 +2.1 from 2020.

1 Diffey, Connor 20.72
2 Despard, Jacob 20.94
3 Nasir Taib, Russel 21.03
4 Rucker, Jalen 21.09
5 Doran, Jake 21.15
6 Miers, Oscar 21.44

this chart shows the lack of testing during Covid 2020. No doubt a reason for so many great improvements across the board.
Will be interesting to see if the big improvers in Track maintain their new standards or "lose form". I'm guessing lack of testing is still the case so we may have to wait a while to see a drop off.
