correct me if I'm wrong here, but with the Accu Track electronic timing doesn't .25 second have to be deducted to make it comparable to NFL times?
If so that'd put the first three to that 40 yard mark (3rd, Quinn @ 4.23) into the high 3.9s and substantially faster than the best footballer times

If I understand correctly what they were timing it was to the 40m mark which is farther than 40 yards, so it means their times were significantly faster.

i never did track, how do the different surfaces, shoes, starter blocks make for a closer apples to apples comparison?

Some great results from a meet in France today:

Andrew Pozzi 13.26, European leading time in the 110m Hurdles
Patryk Dobek of Poland, 1:44.76, also a European leading time. Patryk is a former 400m hurdles, who only took up the 800m this year. He's been phenomenal since the switch.

Although it says 40m the commentators mentioned that the distance being measured is actually 40 yards.
But as someone mentioned, they have starting blocks and spikes, so it is not a completely fair comparison.
Also, football 40 yd dashes are hand-timed and these are fully automatic times, so the hand times would actually be at least a tenth or two slower if the timing was automatic.

Anyway, I think we can safely say that Devin Quinn is faster in the 40 yd dash, than any professional football player.

He would have to be as no current pro player is capable of running 10 flat in the 100. I guess if Quinn was an off the pace closer a former collegiate sprinter could be faster over 40 yards but that would be it.

Yeah, if Quinn can run a 43.7 yards in 4.23 seconds, it's safe to say he has a quick start and is faster than anyone in the NFL.

But what I am wondering about, is what happened in the 2nd part of the race?? Where was his, usually there, top speed?

Quinn heard footsteps catching him, most sprinters hear this even though they are focused on the phases of the race. It causes the want to push harder to try to go faster which in fact slows you down...

So true about trying too hard. In sprinting I know relaxation is everything. Alot of sports are the same way. I used to play alot of baseball in addition to other sports. The majority if not all of my longest homeruns were effortless. When I swung for
the fences if I got homers they didn't go as far. Many times I would strike out or pop it up.

that was my thinking too - it's hard to realise how fast really good sprinters accelerate

Quinn's very good - Baker is sensational. But I agree, I would have hoped for 1/10th better.
But I must say, Quinn will be well worth watching in any indoor meet

Don't give up on his outdoors season just yet. It's early and Quinn ran a 10.01 in college wind legal time which is the All Time Big 10 Record for the Mens 100 Meters! This kid is in the sport for the long
haul and I would be shocked if he doesn't go sub 10 many times in his career. He will get there but yes I wish he would have ran a little faster yesterday.

It was good to see Ramil Guliyev put up an ok time for his first 100 meters today in the heats of 10.25. Too bad he was DQd in the finals as I think he would have went alot faster. Guliyev still has a lifetime best
in the 100 of 9.97 wind legal. I doubt he is capable of running that fast anymore but he is the ultimate competitor. Guliyev like Lemaitre has run sub 10 and sub 20 wind legal. and won medals at the highest levels
of competition. He just may be the greatest white sprinter ever to this point.

I agree with you W/L. Guliyev, now 31, has been an impressive athlete on the world sprint scene. Having to change nations to compete, his coach/father dying just as he was in his ascendency ...... he has a lion heart and tons of ability - regarded as a great sprinting athlete regardless of who it is who is critiquing him.
And he prepares so well. I fully expect sub 10.10 if he doesn't get injured and that means a 20 flat 200m

Also don’t forget cole beck .....pb ..10.10 .....great season ....and trey Cunningham in the 110s ....I reckon Cunningham is a guy who will compete for team USA ...either this year or in Paris ...but he is a special athlete .,..tremendous speed between the hurdles ...I would really like to see Cunningham run a 100 m open .....I have seen him in training come out faster and pull away from his compatriots at FSU.....would be interesting ....

Karsten Warholm set a Word Record in the 300 meter hurdles.
I believe the tine was 33.26.

Warholm and Ingebrigtsen are the two best white track athletes in the world right now, and they both come from the tiny nation of Norway. That kind of blows my mind.
If a country of 5 or 6 million people can turn out these 2 superstars, the rest of Europe should be able to turn out 20 times more superstar tracksters.
It just makes me think that there is a lot of untapped potential out there.

Here is Warholm's WR race

He ran a half second faster than he did when he set the WR last year - 33.26 vs. 33.78.
Hoping for a world record and Olympic gold medal for him in the 400m Hurdles.

We are running out of words to describe both of their acheivements. Guys to help pave the way and give higher goals to more of our men and women in Athletics. Amazing Performance by the King Warholm.

Not good conditions for sprinting or other events at the 2nd Day of the 2021 German Track & Field Championships. Cloudy and cold conditions for the summer time. Despite this we had a few close
hard fought finals in the womens and mens 100 meters finals.

Sprinter Alexandra Burghardt was one of many big surprises on the first day of the 2021 German Championships in Braunschweig's Eintracht Stadium. Over 100 meters, the 27-year-old won the title and fulfilled her dream of the Olympic Games in 11.14 seconds. In the men's pole vault, Oleg Zernikel shone with 5.80 meters and the Olympic ticket. In the triple jump, three jumpers thrilled with strong Leistungen.Im finish she could only stagger with joy.Alexandra Burghardt (LG Gendorf Wacker Burghausen) provided in the final over 100 meters for one of the most emotional moments of the first day of the German Championships in Braunschweig. The 27-year-old got off to a phenomenal start and managed to keep the high frequency until the finish. And this despite the fact that she saw Lisa Mayer (Sprintteam Wetzlar) flying in the corner of her eye.11.14 seconds her winning time – gold! And the direct Olympic ticket." I have finally outgrown myself and shown what I am made of," said the sprinter, overflowing with tears.Lisa Mayer was happy about silver in a strong 11.16 seconds ahead of her club colleague Rebekka Haase (11.32 sec).

The victory over 100 meters of the men fought again an athlete of the category of young savages.Marvin Schulte (SC DHfK Leipzig), who has already arrived as the current best of the year, improved again at the decisive moment and threw himself with a determined look and in 10.19 seconds as the first to the finish.Razor-thin ahead of Hamburg's Lucas Ansah-Peprah, who set a new best time in 10.20 seconds.Bronze is shared by Wolfsburg's Niels Torben Giese (10.30 sec) and Joshua Hartmann (ASV Köln, 10.30 sec). Both ran to the thousandths identical 10,300 seconds.

I haven't found his winning race from today yet. Marvin Schulte is the 2021 German 100 Meters Champion. His 10.19 0.4 shows again that he is just about ready to take the next step up. He can run 10.20's all day long with or without
the wind. He has to get his starts more consistant which I believe he will. The 23 year old Schulte has a chance to takeover will Julian Reus left off hopefully. I love the fact that he is so much taller than their other sprinters. I believe with those long strides
and quick turnover ratio he will go around 10.10 at minimum this summer and hopefully next year break through to that final level needed to be an elite sprinter. Here is a video of him from a few weeks ago.

Scotland is another little nation that is killing it on the track.
They have Josh Kerr, Laura Muir, and Jemma Reekie all of whom are among the best in the world in their events.
Eilish McCoglin, Jake Wightman, Guy Learmouth, Beth Dobbbin are not far behind.

Scotland has a population of just over 5 million - pretty much the same as Norway.
And both these little countries have more track stars and superstars than much bigger countries, like Germany.
Interestingly, these Norway and Scotland are very close to each other geographically. Maybe it's something in the North Sea air. ;-)
