At one time in the 90's and early 2000's Australia had a few men that made World Championship 200m finals. You would think one of this cohort could have nipped the record. Patrick Johnson made a final in this event in this time period and he ran sub 10 during this period, yet he never got to a sub 20.

I know Shirvington typified the "lazy" 100m runner as his pb in the 200 was significantly slower than his 100m pb.

In the early to mid 90s Steve Brimacombe and Damian Marsh ran high 20.20's while Dean Capobianco went twice under 20.20 with his 20.18 and 20.19.
Dean DID work hard as his 100 best was only 10.25 so he negative split the 2nd part of his deuce

Yes but never in school. I played sports my whole life but got into track/sprinting after I was out of school. What about yourself?
Thanks for the reply. Yes I ran track in high school and first year of college. I was also in a rock band and I stopped doing track and dropped out of college(big mistake)Band went nowhere....Got back into track when I started coaching kids track in 2006. I had this kid who was a big mouth but fast, he thought because I was at least 25lbs overweight he could egg me on. So one day I said screw it and said lets go over 60m, he laughed and said sure. One of the other male sprint coaches(who was a competitive masters aged sprinter) also wanted to race, so we went: I was ahead at 60m by 3 strides over the 17 yold big mouth and at least 5 strides ahead of the other coach, that's when I realized I was still fast. Well I have been competing ever since. PB's at 18 were 10.5 100m 20.65 200m 4.49 40 too small (5'9" 150lbs) for football, not fast enough to go past college in track lol BUT now fast enough for Masters track lol still the same height but I am abit heavier at 180lbs.

I also have about 30years for martial arts training in Kickboxing, Karate, Tai Kwan Do and Hapkido although haven't trained in years as I started track, it is my passion now.

MasterMulti is or was also a Masters Track athlete if memory serves.

That's a great story. Thanks for telling us more about you. Yes you were fast. I consider any male that runs under 11 seconds to be faster than average. Once you get down to the 10.50's and below then you really separate yourself from the majority
of people. Yes Master Multi has been on this board for at least 10 years and he has been competing in masters track for a very long time on & off. I will let him answer the question better. Good to have you here. I love track & field and especially sprinting!

My first ever post - from January 2006 - so over 15 years ago now.

"Hi everyone..I just stumbled onto this site so I immediately registered.
If I may I'll introduce myself.
I'm a Masters Athlete (Aussie age pentathlon champ last year, NSW state
champ) who was inspired to start athletics again after two slipped discs in
my 40's and then seeing Shirvo run in '98. I've also just qualified as a
Personal trainer/Fitness instructor under the tutilage of Dr Paul Batman
(Daniel's dad).
I spoke at length with his dad (who's my age) at a meet one day in 2001
and I can confirm what a nice and supportive family he has. He also has a
TV career and a luxury car dealership owning father-in-law so it's
probably true that Matt doesn't have an instinct to escape "a lowly rut"
that life has served him, a position which often fuels success. He has
great control over his life without the NEED for T&F success.
I also think he lacks the emotional "head" to deal with the big situations.
But I still think he would like to break 10 seconds. He was promised
$1,000,000 to be the first Aussie (read white man) to do this although I
wonder how it'll be worded now since Patrick Johnson has achieved this.

I'll be going out to Homebush to watch the NSW champs tomorrow where
Matt will try again to qualify, but he has a good field to deal with
including the quartet who ran a 4x1 in 38.32? last year at the worlds.
So he'll be racing
Daniel Batman, Patrick Johnson, Joshua Ross, Kris Neofytou, Adam
Miller, Ambrose Ezenwa, all of whom can beat him on a given day. These
guys can all achieve a legal 10.30 or better with good conditions
tomorrow.
I hope he does it. He did a 10.37 with a -0.6 on Tuesday so what's that
with a tail wind and running into form? Unfortunately Homebush is often
cursed with a negative swirling wind so any prayers out there......get to it.
I'll be videoing the proceedings so I'l have chance to analyse it all before I
report back with results.

BTW, Matt is now coached by the same guy who coaches Marlon Devonish
(good 200 guy) and Tim Benjamin, the young Brit who beat Jeremy W over
400 twice this year, Tony Lester."

I don't compete at all but I still get out there in the park on the odd occasion to throw discus or shot but not often,
After each annual state Masters' Championship I'm inspired to go do throws for a few weeks to see what colour medal I would have won that year LOL.
I work out at home, work with my builder son, climb in mountainous terrain and ride one of my motorcycles solo in order to camp in the wild and just get away from things. Very nice lifestyle framed to keep me fit and stronger than my contemporaries.
Just turned 68 so no time to waste as muscle soon ebbs away otherwise

The biggest obstacle in staying fit for track especially sprinting during your 50/60/70's is keeping the weight off especially around the gut. When I won Silver at the 2008 Canadian Masters T&F Championships in the 100m I was around 175lbs and ripped at 48 years old, no weight training just hard work in training sessions as well as food intake was smart. Being overweight equals: bad core, bad endurance/cardio, sore knees, hamstring issues and the dreaded shinsplints. Love to hear others opinions.

I agree completely. I think staying lean is crucial for not only athletic performance but overall health as you age. Carrying too much weight is just too hard on the body.

Femke Bol of Holland with another European leading time in the (indoor) 400m - 50.66.
I think this is her 3rd PR this year, and also the 3rd time she set the world lead.
And remember, she is a 400m hurdler, not a 400m runner.

you'd have to think Femke Bol is setting herself up to run sub 50 outdoors this Olympic year. At 6ft tall those tighter bends can't be that easy so 50.66 is stunning

Swiety is gorgeous but is stuck in the low 51's indoor and outdoors for the most part. She does however anchor the Polish womens 4x400m relay team that is always very very good.

Some great performances on the women’s side so far this season:

Abby Steiner USA 7.21(60m)/22.52(200m) age 21
Jenna Prandini USA 7.19(60m)/22.55(200m) age 28
Femke Bol NET 50.66(400m) age 21 (is a 400h)
Laura Muir UK 3:59.88 (1500m) age 27
Yaroslava Mahuchikh UKR 2.06m HJ age 19 (from my hometown Dnipro)
Mariya Lasitskene RUS 2.00m HJ age 28
Paraskevi Papachristou GRE 14.60 TJ age 31 ( great lady, was kicked out of Olympics for Political beliefs)

Lots of good 60m times:

1. Ajla Del Ponte SWITZ 7.14 age 24
2. Ewa Swoboda POL 7.16 age 23 ( sexy due to her higher body fat % compared to other female athletes)
3. Kristina Makarenko RUS 7.17 age 25
4. Hannah Cunliffe USA 7.17 age 25 ( my favourite female athlete, ruined mentally by American gutter culture)
5. Lotta Kemppinen FIN 7.19 age 22

I agree with your assessment of Swoboda, I just cant get past the goth/tatted/lesbo look. Cunliffe is a great athlete but like you say hangs with the wrong people.

Kevin Kranz the 24 year old from Germany is now the fastest european this year and his time is also the 2nd fastest time in the world over 60 meters! :) It's also equals the German 60 meter national record of Julian Reus.. Hope he can build on these times later this summer.

Dortmund Germany National Indoor Championships:

Women

60m (20) 1 Amelie-Sophie Lederer 7.12; 2 Jennifer Montag 7.19; 3 Yasmin Kwadwo 7.19; 4 Rebekka Haase 7.20; 5 Lisa Mayer 7.23; 6 Alexandra Burghardt 7.24;

This time by Amelie Sophie Lederer is as impressive for Germany as Kranz time was. Amelie has flown under the radar but she just put herself in rare territory. So happy for her. Montag and Haase continue to improve! Germany has alot of very talented young sprinters which bodes well for the future!
