Alexander Povetkin looks good. He throws punches with both hands from all angles and has a high work rate. He really knows how to finish off an opponent!

Povetkin is one to watch for sure. The only thing that concerns me about him is his size. He is big enough to defeat most if not all black heavyweights at the moment. However, you have some serious beef coming out of Eastern Europe. Dimitrenko, the Klitschko brothers, Valuev, (who is far from finished in my opinion) Lyakovich 6'4, Wladimir Wirchis 6'5.

I was thinking, Povetkin weighs 220 I believe. If he could shed 20 pounds he could fight cruiser where he would have vicious power (his power is good at heavyweight)and be equal to reach with any of the top cruisers. In fact I think he would one scary cruiserweight. Between him and the Welshman Enzo they could rule the division two belts a piece.

Let Dimitrenko, Klitschko, Virchis, Valuev, Lyakovich, and a dozen or so more up and coming eastern euros rule the heavyweight division.

Just think, between Heavy, and Cruiser we could be 8 for 8.

Apparently there is going to be an IBF elimination tournament.Povetkin will fight Chris Byrd, and Calvin Brock will fight Eddie Chambers, and the winners will face off to become the mandatory challenger to Wladimir Klitschko. Very interesting! And certainly better than a Byrd/ Brock eliminator!

Povetkin is so ambitious to do this after only 13 pro bouts. How do you guys think he'll do against the crafty veteran?

Also, this should give Klitschko plenty of time to pursue unification before he's forced to fight one of these guys. Sweet!

And is it too soon to start worrying about a Wlad/ Sasha match-up? Man, somebody is going to get hurt in that fight.Edited by: JD074

I don't know if he can even get down to 200, but why would he bother? He's the same size as Ibragimov and Chagaev.

He's one of the few good athletes over 200 pounds in boxing right now. I say he's the favorite to win the IBF eliminator.

I think you can get a better idea of his skill in this film of his fight vs. Bostice. Very impressive!!!

In his last fight, June 30, 2007, he totally dominated the American Negro, Larry Donald, winning every round on every judge's card - and Donald in his previous fight had just lost a very narrow split decision to Valuev, and in the fight before Donald drew with Ray Austin (who himself drew with the Sultan, heavyweight champ), and the fight before that Donald completely dominated Evander Holyfield.

Povetkin, Byrd arrive in Erfurt!

Povetkin and Chris Byrd have arrived in Erfurt. The two heavyweights
will kick off the IBF elimination tournament with their
highly-anticipated showdown on Saturday night. Byrd hit German soil on
Sunday. After flying into Frankfurt International Airport, he was
transferred to Erfurt where he used the afternoon to rest from the long
journey and recover from the jet lag. Shortly after Byrd checked in,
Povetkin also arrived. For the past couple of weeks the 2004 Olympic
gold medal winner has been working out in Sauerland´s Max-Schmeling-Gym
in Berlin. Accompanied by coach Valeri Belov, brother Vladimir and
translator Anna, he travelled to Erfurt by car. It took them three
hours. "I am in great shape," Povetkin stated. "I am well prepared for
Chris Byrd. We had a good trip from Berlin to Erfurt and I am very
optimistic for the fight." Both fighters have brought their own cooks
with them, with Povetkin relying on Russian food. "It gives me the
power I need against Byrd," he added. Povetkin and Byrd will give the
local fans a first taste of their class tomorrow during the official
press training. Also working out will be Italy´s Simone Rotolo and his
opponent, European middleweight champion Sebastian Sylvester, as well
as former European super-middleweight titlist Mads Larsen.

This should be a good match. They are both good boxers who attack. It probably won't be boring.

No, Nevada. Povetkin is a "good boxer who attacks" but Byrd is a slick, defensive boxer who evades his opponents. It will be a good test of Povetkin's offensive ability, whether he can catch the elusive Byrd with some good punches and knock him out.

Oh right, I forgot that I'm not allowed to have an opinion in the boxing forum. JD, the guy who does not even understand how boxers make weight, is going to tell me what my opinion should be.

For what it's worth, I never thought of Byrd as much of an attacker, either, but more like what JD described - slick, evasive, hitting on the move. Byrd reminds me more of someone like James Toney, for example, than he does Mike Tyson.

neada, did you mean that Byrd doesn't get on a bicycle and avoid fighting all night when you said that Byrd is an attacker? If that's what you meant by being an attacker, I can agree with that. Edited by: White Shogun

There are plenty of good athletes over 200lbs in boxing today. Wlad and Vitali Klitschko could be superstars in any number of different sports. Maskaev is big and strong could be a very good linebacker [if Russians played football-but then the NFL would be all Russian!]Povetkin looks like a very good athlete, Dimitrenko with training could play in the NBA.
These Eastern European men go through the school system that really build's them into top shape unlike the gym classes here that teach duck duck goose. Also the men in Russia give two years to the Russian Army-tough training build's tough men-so they win at Hockey, Boxing, Sambo, Weightlifting, Strong man contests, UFC,Etc.
That is why they kicked butt in the Olympics every four years and took over boxing in less then a decade!!!

Some other good heavyweight athletes:

Tye Fields used to play basketball, and can throw 100 punches in the final round, as well as running marathons.

Joey Abell is a former football player.

Sultan has incredible hand speed.

Brian Minto is a former linebacker.

Bidenko appears very athletic, as does Sosnowski, Platov, Preskar, Cameron, Krasniqi, Meehan, and Mike Mollo.

Ther are a lot of athletic heavyweights today. Its just that they are supposedly the wrong color to possess athleticism.

FWIW, my bookmaker, which is pretty legit, has Povetkin around a five to one favorite as well.

I found my link to the Bute fight in the boxrec forum. Sometime you can find one at eastsideboxing, or boxingscene. This fight will be televised in at least 25 countries, so there will be a way to watch it on the internet, if we can find it.

That's what I do, JD, scan those boxing forums, plus the stupid one we were on before, and another one or two besides. Sometimes someone will post a usable internet tv link, or if not, somebody may be doing a more or less decent blow by blow. Someone said it will be on German channel ARD.

The winner of Byrd-Povetkin will fight the winner of Calvin Brock-Eddie Chambers.

Some are building up Chambers as the next Great Black Hope. It would be nice to see Povetkin give Chambers a dose of reality.
