The greatest qb ever has to be Steve Young. His qb rating is unrivaled by any players. He also could pick up yards with his legs which Manning can't.

Sorry Don.

Insert Don Music style frustration here:

I thought it was fairly new info and didn't bother to read the earlier posts. The thing about trying to determine the best QB ever is that it is dependent on the supporting cast on offense. Steve Young had a great offensive team around him, no to mention offensive coaches. Montana before him was pretty much the same way. Manning has been blessed to have an offense close to Young's in skill. Marino didn't have near the supporting cast around him that Manning or Young had. Drew Brees is another QB who fits into this Marino mold. He's a great QB, but hasn't had a world class offense around him, at least not yet. Despite it, he is doing some unreal things. To me, Brees is the modern Joe Montana, but with a worse team around him. Told he was too small, etc.

Remember when the great Drew Brees was proclaimed a bust by the media and DWFs very early in his career?

He still does not receive the attention he deserves, very little hoopla. He puts up great numbers, presents a wholesome image, is articulate, and likeable. What could be his problem?

The Rise of Drew Brees

People can say that Brett Favre and Peyton Manning are the "rare" athletes that are at the very top of the QB food chain, and I'm willing to admit that there's truth to that. Certainly, not everybody can play QB, year-in-and-year-out, at such an extremely high-level like Peyton and Favre.

QB is the toughest position to play in all of professional sports. But now we have Drew Brees! He makes our QB stable nearly complete. He's in his prime right now. Brees' will likely appear in the postseason this year.

Excluding Kerry Collins (191 TDs/187 picks) from the discussion - that would make Drew Brees essentially #6 among active leaders in passing yards and passing TDs (behind Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, McNabb, Tom Brady and Kurt Warner). Brees' will easily surpass Kurt Warner statistically. Now the real intrigue begins!

Comparing McNabb to Brees...

Brees' - 1st pick of the 2nd Round by the Chargers (32nd Overall Pick) in 2001

He turns 31 next January. 27,956 passing yards; 182 TD passes. A 64.1 completion percentage for his career. He's only been sacked 143 times.

Onto McNabb - Top 10 Overall Pick by the Eagles in 1999

According to his ESPN profile, he turns 33 in November. 29,932 passing yards; 199 TD passes. A 58.8 completion percentage for his career. He's been sacked 331 times.

Could McNabb be "less athletic" than Drew Brees? Could he have less "pocket presence" than Mr. Brees? Those are all interesting questions. Since neither of them have a Super Bowl ring, I consider them even in that department. A few years ago, the sports media would have practically guaranteed 45,000 career passing yards for McNabb, but that is truly in jeopardy right now. If he somehow manages to stay healthy and reaches that pinnacle, I will be impressed. That doesn't happen everyday in the NFL.
___________________________

My conclusion/projection:

Drew Brees' numbers have absolutely skyrocketed the last few seasons. The media has been forced to acknowledge him. Unless something catastrophic occurs, Brees' will surpass McNabb in passing yards and TDs thrown, and it will happen in the near future. The trend of Brees' rising and McNabb stagnating is likely to continue. Brees' throws into really tight coverage all the time, and his interception numbers aren't bad at all. McNabb doesn't have much of an advantage in any statistical category.

I knew Brees' had superior eye/hand coordination, but some of the differences were bigger than I had expected (sacks, completion percentage). Drew Brees, Steve Young & Brett Favre are the prototypical athletic QBs. Heck, Brett Favre can still run around in the pocket at 40! Hopefully, Drew Brees' can do the same in his late 30's. It's a real treat to see such amazing eye/hand coordination, combined with athleticism and pocket awareness. Drew Brees' is a Top 3 NFL QB!

Passing TDs among active leaders:

Favre - 476
Peyton - 348
Brady - 212
McNabb - 199
Warner - 191
Brees - 182

Drew Brees update:

190 career passing TDs, with 6 regular season games remaining. He's also a thousand yards short of 30,000 passing yards.

If healthy, he will likely reach both milestones THIS season!

P.S. - Favre, Brady and Warner continue to be phenomenal! Brady and Welker were SPECTACULAR against the JETS.

I write an article about Brees, and then he happens to bring a Super Bowl to New Orleans. I have goosebumps!

Brees now totally owns Donovan McFlabb, who will probably never get a ring at this point.

"The Rise of Drew Brees" (could be the name of a movie) - hopefully his legend continues to grow.

Say good bye to another great quarterback. Brees signed with the Saints for $60 million. Can't blame him for taking the cash, but I doubt he'll ever see the Super Bowl with that franchise.

Goodbye Drew, it was a nice run you had there in San Diego.

And good luck to you as well - you're going to need it.

The above post was made nearly 4 years ago and was not unreasonable at the time. It is amazing what Drew Brees accomplished in New Orleans.

Either Drew Brees is one of the most amazing men who've ever lived, or this is another reason not to believe anything emitted as "fact" by the "mainstream media":
Saints QB suits up as monarch of Bacchus, one of New Orleans' biggest Carnival parades

By MARY FOSTER , Associated Press

One of the most accurate arms in the NFL had no trouble finding receivers Sunday night.

Thousands lined the streets to catch small, foam footballs thrown by Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees while he served as monarch of Bacchus, one of the biggest parades of the Carnival season that culminates in Mardi Gras.

The New Orleans Saints quarterback threw 10,000 black and gold footballs, along with the usual beads and doubloons, from his perch atop the float that was desined to look like a Roman chariot. Brees dressed as the Roman god of wine in a short gold and red tunic, gold boots and cape and a crown of gold grape leaves.

Assuming Brees threw a football every 5 seconds, it would take 14 hours non-stop at that rate for him to throw 10,000 of them, not to mention he was also throwing beads and doubloons at the same time.

Adding to the irony is that he plays in a city with a very high black population percentage, as Mayor Nagin would say, a "chocolate city". Meanwhile in DW America, fans are sad because MICHAEL VICK should get the award.

New Orleans-proper is a majority black city. However, population of the surrounding metro area is more than 3/4 white. Most of the white folks in the Superdome at a Saints game drive in from Metairie, Kenner, St Tammany, and beyond (Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and SW Mississippi).

Drew Bress has been superb the last few weeks. He had a stretch of sub-par games by his standards. Some say he had an undisclosed injury. He has seven Td's and over a thousand yards passing in the last three games. Just as important as the stats, he's been deadly in do or die situations

Drew Brees, one of my favorite athletes, will open up the playoffs on Saturday in San Francisco. I'm amped for this game. If New Orleans wins, they are a LEGIT threat. Likewise, if San Fran wins, they'll be dangerous.

It may be just a negotiating ploy, but even so it's a stupid thing to say.

Saints GM Calls Brees 'Very Good' Not 'Great'

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports that the New Orleans Saints see Drew Brees as merely a “very good,â€￾ not a “great,â€￾ quarterback and are looking to pay him accordingly.Cole cites three sources saying that Saints GM Mickey Loomis corrected others calling Brees “greatâ€￾ during a conversation about Brees’ contract negotations this week at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.

Brees and the Saints reportedly remain $5 million apart on a new deal for Brees, who finished up a six-year, $60 million deal in New Orleans this past season. The Saints are looking to clear up salary cap space for other moves, including a guaranteed deal for defensive end Will Smith.

Brees set an NFL single-season record with 5,476 passing yards in 2011. His accomplishments in his six years with the Saints include four playoff berths and a championship in Super Bowl XLIV.

I understand what Mickey Loomis is saying here. After all, Brees is a short, slow, white QB, so he can't be "great", especially in light of the godlike sCam Newton on the Panthers and the demi-god "RGIII" in the upcoming draft. Now THOSE are "Great" QB's

Drew Brees had a great day. He had over 500 yards passing and tied an NFL record with 7 TDs in a Saints win.

Brees has had a Hall of Fame career and adds to his laurels every week.

Drew Brees is still at the top of his game as he approaches his 41st birthday. I wonder if he'll outlast Tom Brady agewise. I'd say he has a good shot.

Great game tonight setting the all-time record for TD passes, though Brady is right behind him. He has claim to being one of the top five best quarterbacks ever, and maybe even higher than that.

Pretty amazing - I still remember when he was in San Diego and was inconsistent and they brought in Rivers. It's great to see a young QB develop into on of the top 10 qbs in league history over the course of his career.

A second Super Bowl title in February will cement Brees' legacy as one of the five best ever. The Saints look as tough to beat as any team at this point of the season.

Regardless, I've always enjoyed watching Brees play. His accuracy is unprecedented and he's smart as hell, quite a combination.

The single-game completion percentage of 96.7% (29 of 30 passing) is one that might take awhile for Lamar Jackson to break! :p

I take back everything I’ve said bad about Drew Brees now that he’s squarely drawn a bulls eye on himself by making comments supporting the flag and country.

The blowback is going to be horrendous. I expect he will end up retiring. I also expect a groveling apology any minute now.

Let's hope he stands tall against the attacks of the Lefty Commies. If he does retire he should be able to take every penny of that new contract he signed!

I tweeted at him, that I supported him and to never waver in his beliefs. Probably won't see it but I thought all the bad stuff that was about to come his way he needed some support.
