This might be an unpopular opinion but it's OUR never-ending appetite for drugs that is helping to fuel these cartels.

Living. Does it matter?
Yes it matters. They endangered themselves and the children by "living" in a place known to be in a state of anarchy. What the hey, why not Somalia or Afghanistan, just as stupid. They didn't die of being shot. They died of terminal stupidity. I have heard this type of thing far too often to have sympathy for them (except of course for the children and babies). As far as the "men" in their lives, damn them for letting their women go anywhere down there without a male escort.

From the article:

“Family members describe themselves as part of a Mormon community of about 3,000 members, living in their own agricultural community in Mexico.”

So these people chose to live in one of the most violent and dangerous areas of the Western Hemisphere, likely to be “left alone” to practice their unorthodox version of Mormonism as there is a lot of cheap land and privacy in the remote region of Sonora. They likely knew the risk when they settled there. That doesn’t mean they deserved this but the adults should bare some blame for putting their families in a dangerous situation.
