How is Patriots rookie Chase Winovich dominating the preseason? New England’s offensive tackles explain

by Andrew Callahan

It all comes back to the motor.

Chase Winovich can’t turn it off. Preseason opponents can’t slow it. Winovich’s teammates, who were first exposed to the rookie’s relentlessness in June and July practices, have been pushed to the point they’ve pushed back well after the whistle.

Offensive tackle Dan Skipper’s did so twice in training camp. But since then, Skipper’s wisened up to how to combat the indefatigable rookie, who owns a team-high 2.5 sacks halfway through the preseason.

DUUBOLGJEFGOHDGQMYRWY2IWTI.jpg

“Stuff breaks down as time goes on. Having the ability to be slippery late, that’s what a motor does for you," Skipper said. "The play’s never over (with him), which makes it tougher. It’s harder to be clean. You see a lot more fight reps and things like that.”

Opposing tackles might be better off simply squaring up from the start.

One week after Winovich chased down 1.5 sacks and four tackles in Detroit, he totaled five stops, a sack, two quarterback hits, two tackles for loss and several pressures at Tennessee. Not to mention the pair of drawn holds. He effectively turned the right side of the Titans’ offensive line into a turnstile.

After the 22-17 win — during which New England posted a second-half shutout — Winovich was asked why his maximum effort seems to differ from other players'.

“It’s weird. I really don’t know why I’m built like that," he said. "It might be a gift and a curse sometimes when it’s extremely hot and they’re just trying to run the ball away and I see the guy. In my head there’s a little part of me that’s like, ‘You’re probably not going to make this play, maybe this one you should stay for the next one when it comes to you.’

"But then you’ll see me just sprinting and trying to hit somebody.”

Relentlessness is one thing. When paired with raw power, quickness and speed, it becomes another entirely. And in those areas, Winovich also registers as elite.

At the NFL Combine last February, Winovich clocked a 4.59 in the 40-yard dash, a time that bested several attending wide receivers and running backs. Even better was his 6.94 in the three-cone drill, a New England favorite, which also registered among the best of the 337 players. Winvoich also cranked out 18 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press, showcasing an upper-body strength he’s since used to bench press opposing blockers into backfields.

Said Bill Belichick midway through training camp. “Chase is tough. He runs well. He’s got good size, good power.”

Patriots offensive tackle Cole Croston re-signed with the team barely a week ago after starting the summer on PUP and has already seen enough to recognize Winovich is on the path to regular-season impact. Perhaps even a long career. After mentioning his motor, Croston turned immediately to the rookie’s advanced technique in a post-game interview Saturday night.

“He’s great with his hands. Strong kid who’s really coming into his own. He’s working hard out there," Croston said. “He’s becoming a good player.”

Off the field, Winovich carries his unyielding approach into the film room. Skipper says he knows the Michigan product logs long hours studying tape. In there, Winovich is following a game plan laid out for him by former Patriots and longtime mentor Willie McGinest: rush with a plan and know your opponents.

Soon enough, they will know him. They will feel him.

The man with the motor that just won’t die.

Aside from his skills as a pass-rusher, Winovich is an interesting white athlete in that he appears to have a very flamboyant and outgoing personality...yet as I watched him at Michigan and over the past few pre-season games with NE, his smile fades and he seems to play very angry. In a few years, I could see him taking over for Gronk as the team's most popular and well know player after Brady.

Winovich also seems to be mildly racially aware. Below is something the posted on his Instagram account in which there is a video of him leveling a black RB, talking about his European "ancestors," and what his last name means in Serbrian/Croation...

https://www.instagram.com/p/BwhMcGXha7O/?hl=en
"A quick history lesson of my last name: Serbian/Croatian in its origin, Winovich is derived from “Vucji” which quite literally means Wolflike. Together with the Yugoslavian suffix “..ic”, it refers to the “son or descendant of the wolflike one.” Just as my wolf ancestors hunted to survive, I too must eat. Hungry like the wolf."

Patriots Mailbag: Why Chase Winovich Should Generate Excitement In Year 2

Let’s get into this week’s mailbag: @MKcCooper which rookie should we be most excited about heading into year 2?

Chase Winovich. He was good as a rookie, and he should be even better in his second year with a bigger role. Kyle Van Noy and Jamie Collins are free agents this offseason, and it seems unlikely both will be back. So, it would be unsurprising if Winovich has a starting role as an edge defender next season.

Winovich mostly was used as a pass rusher in 2019 with 81.8 percent of his snaps coming on passing downs. He was equally effective as a run defender during his time at Michigan, so he should be able to play on early downs in the NFL, as well. WInovich finished fourth among qualified Patriots defenders in Pro Football Focus’ pass-rush productivity metric with 23 total pressures. He only finished behind Collins, Van Noy and Dont’a Hightower.

Great to see Winovich end up as a Patriot and even better to see he has pride in his heritage. He really plays like a Son of a Wolf out there!

Chase Winovich Is in Elite Company Through Three Weeks of Regular Season

One of the highlights of the New England Patriots' defense in 2020 has been second-year pass rusher Chase Winovich.

After a strong rookie season in which he recorded 5.5 sacks and 10 quarterback hits in a limited role, the former Michigan product has taken a big step forward in his second season already.

This is most evident in PFF's pass-rush win rate statistic, which is essentially the percentage in which a pass rusher beats a blocker.

Here are the top four players that are leading the league in pass-rush win rate through three games:

1. T.J. Watt (PIT): 29.3%

2. Chase Winovich (NE): 27.5%

3. Myles Garrett (CLE): 26.5%

4. Aaron Donald (LAR): 25.5%

That's elite company to be in for Winovich. Watt, Garrett and Donald are three of the top pass rushers in the NFL, which is why it's also impressive to see Winovich in the ranks with them in that category.

Through three games, Winovich has 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, 10 total tackles and five quarterback hits, doing so while playing 66 percent of the team's total defensive snaps. His impact is evident through the eye test on Sundays, with his speed off the line of scrimmage helping him beat offensive tackles consistently, allowing him to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks at will.

Winovich's play is great value considering he is on his four-year, $3.83 million rookie contract.

Although Winovich is a couple years away from a payday, if he keeps up his production he will absolutely be in line to earn some serious cash from a team in 2022. Unfortunately, that team will probably not be the Patriots given their history of not paying out for pass rushers. So let's enjoy and appreciate the play of Winovich in a Patriots uniform while we can.

Here's background on Belichick's scapegoating of Winovich, who is as both of these articles note the Patriots' best defensive player this season. Belichick's gobbledyegook non-explanation makes about as much sense as Sean McVay trying to explain last year why he suddenly decided to significantly cut back Cooper Kupp's playing time in the midst of a season in which he was one of the top three receivers in the league.

Chase Winovich was arguably the Patriots' best defensive player over the first few weeks of the season, but he's played just 22 and 13 snaps the last two weeks.

Some pointed to his personal foul penalty against the 49ers following a Jimmy Garoppolo interception to his reduced playing time, but Bill Belichick said Monday that was not the case.

ESPN's Mike Reiss nicely detailed how it seems the team just doesn't view him as a three-down linebacker at the moment.

Speaking Tuesday, Belichick was asked what he's seen from Winovich on first and second down of late.

"Well, look, it's really all about team defense. I think, speaking for all of us, we've had some good moments and we've had some not so good ones and what we need is more consistency," he said. "That comes from everybody across the board. Chase plays hard, he's a great pursuit player, he’s strong at the point of attack, he can defeat blockers and can rush the passer. But, just collectively, we all have to be more consistent in our execution of the defense and our fundamentals in the defense. We’ve given up too many yards, however it's come – running game, passing game – the last two weeks in those situations. We've just got to coach better and we’ve got to play better. So, you could say that about everybody on the defensive unit, including all the defensive coaches and players and staff and everybody else. We just need to be better."

It was hard not to spot Chase Winovich over the first four weeks of the season. With his blonde mane escaping the grasp of his helmet, his hair flew around as he looked like the Patriots’ best defensive player every time he was out there.

The last two weeks, he’s barely been on the field.

After seeing 66 percent of the snaps against Las Vegas, Winovich was on the field for 34 percent against Denver and only 13 total snaps in Sunday’s loss to San Francisco.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss tweeted that on the fourth play of Sunday’s game, the Patriots had 10 defenders on the field; on the next play, with the same personnel grouping. Winovich was also flagged for a blindside block after Devin McCourty picked off Jimmy Garoppolo, and CBS cameras caught New England coach Bill Belichick screaming at Winovich.

As for the lack of playing time, Belichick said he expects him to continue to play.

"I think he's been the same player," he said. "Some of it’s situational and game plan and the way things worked out the last two games, but he’s a good player for us and he'll continue to play."

Monday, Belichick was asked if that was why Winovich saw a decrease in play, to which he answered “No.”

Tuesday, Belichick was asked if anything had changed in Winovich’s style of play since the beginning of the year, and he opened the door as to why the second-year Michigan Man saw the decrease in snaps.

“He’s been the same player. Some of it’s situational in game plan and in the way things worked out the last two games,” Belichick said. “He’s a good player for us, and he’ll continue to play.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Steve Belichick, Winovich’s positional coach.

“Every game plan is different. We just try and do the best we can putting guys in roles to succeed. You never know how the week is going to plan out.”

I'm getting a kick out of these Head Cucks disciplining Young White Players.. Another double standard when compared to the numerous black affletes that usually clog up rosters.. What a joke BB has become, not even a full season after losing his meal ticket, Brady! A couple more bad losses for The Pats should force their hand to play Winovich, but Belichick is a stubborn SOB. This could get bad.

I truly think all Winovich did wrong was be an Alpha White Male in the heat of a moment. That's not allowed in NFL let alone Amerika these days.

We at Caste Football are familiar with this drill. A young player plays well, makes a couple mistakes and then blam! It's as if he's responsible for some horrible crime.

I suspect it's because of the black supremacists on the team and in the media. The want to get rid of all white men so they can have 100% "diversity." I also think that most blacks believe that if a white man has anything whatsoever, be it a job or a car, it can only be achieved because of "racism."

WInovich committed a silly foul and compounded his troubles by arguing with BB. Probably warranted being benched a series or two. But the whole second half? Come on. Isn't it ironic that the Pats worst defensive performance of the year is the game where Winovich barely played. And their second worst performance was when Chase played his second least. I see a pattern. But BB is the genius. The same genius that chooses useless draft picks year after year. Dalton Keane is a fine player but he is basically a fullback. In desperate need of a tight end he passes on both Cole Kmet and Harrison Bryant.

The same genius who picked up Cam Newton off a clearance rack after the rest of the league passed on him.

BB is a smart guy and a very good football coach. Is he a genius? Well sort of. Only when Tom Brady is on the team.

I saw Winovich was on some radio station and said he thought the JFK assassination was a coverup and mentioned Epstein. Kraft can't have that. Winovich is too alpha for the oligarchs reminds me of Bill Romanowski

Winovich played five, count 'em, five snaps yesterday against Buffalo, or 8.6%. The team's best defensive player's playing time has dropped off the cliff the past four games while his team struggles big time. This is one of the most blatant and outrageous screwing over of a White defensive player I can recall.

Pure BS. Belichek is looking more petty every day and less like a genius. He talks about having to play young players and give them experience due to the "cap issues" the Patriots are in but he keeps Winovich on the bench.

Belichick could be working to build up his anti-white street/locker room cred by benching Winovich for when it's time for Belichick to look for a new job. That's likely part of it. The other part is simply Belichick's own fragile ego - Winovich questioned him, so he has to react with a wildly out of proportion punishment.

Bingo, it's BBs ego. He lost a Super Bowl because he was in a spat with his best DB LOL.

Belichick's lies, er "explanation," for Winovich's benching:

Chase Winovich played a season-low five snaps on Wednesday, the fourth week in a row his usage has decreased. Asked directly about Winovich's status on Monday, Belichick indirectly claimed that diminished role will change. "It's been situational. He'll play," the Patriots' head coach told reporters. "He's a good player, he'll play."

Winovich is indeed a 'good player.' Despite taking a back seat for the past four games, the 2019 third-round pick still leads the Patriots with 2.5 sacks. The rest of the team has just four sacks since his playing time started to dip in Week 6. Asked if something changed since the start of the season in regards to Winovich's standing, Belichick said his usage has "been a week-by-week" thing.

Does that mean the potent pass rusher will see an uptick in field time next week against a Jets team that has allowed the fourth most sacks (25) in the NFL this season? In a game that the Patriots should be ahead in, it would be a logical choice. If he's not, it's a major red flag. https://985thesportshub.com/2020/11...planation-for-chase-winovichs-decreased-role/

It's looking like Belichick may be headed for an ignominious end a la Don Shula/Tom Landry to his coaching career.

All the signs are pointing that way.

Chase has been getting jerked around as an elite player since his teenage years, when as a 4-star 216 lb linebacker in 2015, Harbaugh sent him to the fullback group. He was bounced back and forth between blocking tight-end and h-back (and never featured over those first two years) before the staff finally planted him at his NFL role. He weighed 236 before his junior year and still reports at an even "250." At Michigan, he earned all-conference team recognition as a junior and All-American second-team plaudit as a senior.

Winovich played 67% of the snaps in Week 9, apparently he's out of The Genius's doghouse for now.

Winovich Embraces New Role

Chase Winovich jumped back into the lineup in a big way against the Ravens, playing 98 percent of the defensive snaps, often off-the-ball in a new positional twist for the second-year defender.

After seeing his playing time bottom out in back-to-back losses to the 49ers and Bills, Winovich had his best defensive game as a pro and possibly found a new role going forward.

"I have always said that I am a football player just looking for opportunities to help the team win in any way possible," said Winovich after the victory over the Ravens. "This was a really fun game for a lot of reasons but getting to play off the ball again was definitely something I enjoyed since I view myself as a pretty versatile football player. I am just grateful to my coaches for giving me the opportunity to expand my role."

The difference in the speed and athleticism on the field for the Patriots jumped off the field Sunday night and Winovich's speed and motor were a big part of it. With a slate of mobile quarterbacks on deck, that speed should play a big role for the Patriots defense.

"Chase can run, he can tackle," said Jerod Mayo on Tuesday morning via Webex. "He hustles on each and every play, his motor is one of his key attributes and I thought he did a good job [in the game]."

Winovich recorded six solo tackles and was around quarterback Lamar Jackson a lot, creating the kind of game-changing pressure that was apparent in the first weeks of the season. The Patriots defense is at their best when Winovich is being disruptive and this new role could provide more opportunities for that.

"One thing about Chase, he's always willing and ready to do whatever you ask him to do," said Bill Belichick on Tuesday. "He learned the assignments on that and what to do and I thought I did a good job of it."

The "genius" is at it again:

Winovich had played more than 80% of the snaps for four straight games leading into this week, but he saw just 24 snaps (38%) this week with most in the second half after the game was out of reach. This seemed to backfire, however, as the Rams rushing attack had a lot of success so perhaps the Patriots will turn back to Winovich next week.

Winovich has too big of a personality for lame stream media and ol Bill. They like their White Athletes more subdued.

Another example of a White Man held to a different standard based on his race. The NFL is full of clowns with attitude problems and they want to single out Winovich. I say get off his nuts and unleash the beast. Let the man be himself.

White men in the NFL these days are expected to be "aw shucks"/"take one for the team" type players, and any one who doesn't toe the line is singled out for negative attention. Josh Allen (with BSPN's recent vicious attack on him) is another good example.

After bottoming out at just 9% of the New England's snaps in Week 8, Winovich played from 81% to 98% snaps in Weeks 10 through 13, before dropping the past two games to 38% and 26%. There's no rhyme or reason to it, just "The Genius" playing childish head games with a talented young player.
