Marion Jones Admits to Steroid Use

By Amy Shipley

Track star Marion Jones has acknowledged using steroids as she prepared for the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney and plans to plead guilty Friday in New York to two counts of lying to federal agents about her drug use and an unrelated financial matter, according to a letter Jones sent to close family and friends.

Jones, who won five medals at the Sydney Olympics, said she took the steroid known as "the clear" for two years beginning in 1999, according to the letter, which was read to The Washington Post by a person who had been given a copy of it. A person familiar with Jones's legal situation who requested anonymity confirmed the relevant facts that were described in the letter.

Jones said her former coach, Trevor Graham, gave her the substance, telling her it was the nutritional supplement flaxseed oil and said she should take it by putting two drops under her tongue. Graham, contacted by telephone today, said he had no comment.

Jones's admissions could cost her the three gold and two bronze medals she won in Sydney. In December 2004, the International Olympic Committee opened an investigation into allegations surrounding performance-enhancing drug use by Jones, once considered the greatest female athlete in the world.

In the past, Jones has vehemently denied using steroids or any performance-enhancing drugs.

Jones said she "trusted [Graham] and never thought for one second" she was using a performance-enhancing drug until after she left Graham's Raleigh, N.C.-based training camp at the end of 2002. "Red flags should have been raised when he told me not to tell anyone about" the supplement program, she said in the letter. She also said she noticed changes in how her body felt and how she was able to recover from workouts.

The clear, also known as THG, is a powerful steroid that was found to be at the center of the performance-enhancing drugs scandal known as Balco. More than a dozen track and field athletes have faced punishments for their use of the clear, which drug-testing authorities could not detect until Graham sent a sample of it to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency in 2003.

Baseball players Gary Sheffield and Jason Giambi admitted during grand jury testimony to using the clear, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Barry Bonds also admitted using a substance that he had been told by his personal trainer was flaxseed oil, the Chronicle reported.

The federal probe surrounding Balco, a nutritional supplements company based in Burliname, Calif., has resulted in five criminal convictions. Jones's coach, Graham, was indicted last November on three counts of lying to federal agents connected to the investigation. He has pled not guilty and his trial is scheduled for November.

The head of Balco, Victor Conte, has repeatedly and publicly accused Jones of using drugs.

Jones, who recently married to former sprinter Obadele Thompson, said in her letter she planned to fly from her home in Austin, Texas, and meet her mother in New York to enter the plea. She said she faced up to six months in jail and would be sentenced in three months. Federal sentencing guidelines call for a maximum of five years in prison for one count of lying to federal agents.

"I want to apologize for all of this," she said, according to the person reading the letter, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "I am sorry for disappointing you all in so many ways."

Reached at their Austin home, Thompson declined comment on the letter, portions of which were read to him, saying "the process has to go through before you can make any comments . . . I'm sure at the appropriate time, all necessary comments will be made." He did not dispute the contents of the letter.

When questioned in 2003 by federal agents investigating Balco, Jones said she lied about using the clear even though agents presented her with a sample of the substance and she immediately recognized it as what she had taken at Graham's behest, according to the letter. The letter said she lied because she panicked and wanted to protect herself and her coach.

Jones also said in the letter that she lied about a $25,000 check given to her by track athlete Tim Montgomery, the father of her young son who pleaded guilty in New York this year for his part in a multimillion-dollar bank fraud and money-laundering scheme.

Jones said she told investigators she knew nothing about the deposit, even though Montgomery told her it was from the 2005 sale of a refurbished vehicle and was partial payment for $50,000 she had loaned him.

"Once again, I panicked," she wrote. "I did not want my name associated with this mess. I wanted to stay as far away as possible."

She was so adamant in her denials previously, going so far as to promise libel suits. What a hoaxer. The main art form a person has to master to be a public figure in this country is to be an accomplished liar.. .

We have the same testimony from Bonds and yet it's still not enough for Emporer Selig. Until the king cheater is taken down, all these other clowns are just bit players.
It's good that another pretender was exposed, though.

I think they will be as the US lost a relay 4*100 gold in Edmonton. This was taken away from the US when Tim Montgomery admitted steroid abuse to a grand jury. Funny side note South Africa was given the gold and their team was predominately white.

Jones will lose her medals from the Sydney Olympics. It`s about time.
Next up should be Flo Jo, although most in the mass media would be afraid to probe into the past of someone who is dead. Of course it was just a natural death....

But...
But...

I thought only Whites needed the dope to compete against God's Chosen (all natural, of course
smiley2.gif
) natural affletes?!

I thought it was only Whites doping for the Tour de France. We are told that it has been permanently ruined and we should avoid it.

Should we finally start questioning the legitimacy of track results? Will the powers suggest that track is irredeemably ruined and should be avoided?

Inquiring minds want to know why black dominance equals naturally "gifted" ---- while White dominance automatically equals chemically enhanced. This subversive marxist myth needs to be crushed.Edited by: Deadlift

I have been reading some of the track and field forums this morning. The T&F world is crushed and needs to be put on suicide watch. Twenty years after Ben Johnson was caught and many others since, people are still shocked that Jones cheated. IMO, every track result since the early 1980's (about the time that white sprinters could no longer compete) is tainted.Edited by: SteveB

I agree with you SteveB. The cover up by the American Officials for the last 30 plus years has been nothing short of remarkable. I'm really suprised that they are making an example finally of a few of these sprinters. There are countless athletes that have been caught but yet will allowed to compete and continue to use the peds to win medals. Now maybe some people will realize that the US is the king of the cheaters.

They also do it in Jamaicca and all through the Caribean. I just hope that in the future we will someday have a more level playing field. I'm not going to hold my breath on it. Cheaters will always cheat. Just like in the other sports.

This could get uglier before it gets good. A known drug cheat handing over her gold to an "obvious" drug cheat, this is like OJ getting away with murder and then suing LA County for malicious prosecution....

ATHENS, Greece -- Katerina Thanou's lawyer insists the Greek sprinter deserves the 100-meter gold medal from the 2000 Sydney Olympics after finishing as runner-up to Marion Jones.

Thanou, however, was at the center of a doping scandal at the Athens Games four years later. Her lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, said she should still be considered a worthy winner.

"I believe that since [Jones] used banned substances and undeservedly won the race with the use of illegal means, it would be correct for her to lose the gold medal. It should deservedly be awarded to Ms. Thanou,'' Dimitrakopoulos told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Jones could be stripped of her five Olympic medals after pleading guilty Friday in suburban New York to lying to federal investigators when she denied using performance-enhancing drugs. Jones also pleaded guilty to lying about her role in a check-fraud scheme.

Lamine Diack, president of track and field's governing body, said Jones "will be remembered as one of the biggest frauds in sporting history.''

"A lot of people believed in the achievements of Marion Jones and this confession leaves a bitter taste, and tarnishes the image of a sport in which a majority of athletes are honest and clean,'' he said.

However, Diack said he was also satisfied with Jones' confession because it meant the anti-doping message was working.

"This case shows that it doesn't matter how big a name you are, or when the offense was committed, if you are doping, we will get you in the end," he said.

Thanou and fellow Greek runner Kostas Kenteris failed to show up for drug tests on the eve of the Athens games, claimed they were injured in a motorcycle accident and eventually pulled out. Both were later suspended for two years.

Thanou and Kenteris returned to competition in February, and were to be tried in a Greek court last month on perjury charges related to the doping test. The hearing was postponed until June 19, 2008.

The International Association of Athletics Federations will work with the IOC to determine whether Jones should be stripped of her medals from Sydney and other results.

Under statute of limitations rules, the IOC and other sports bodies can go back eight years to remove medals and nullify results. In Jones' case, that would include the 2000 Olympics, where she won gold in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 1,600-meter relay and bronze in the long jump and 400 relay.

Jones won a gold (100 meters) and bronze (long jump) at the 1999 worlds in Seville, Spain, and two gold (200 and 4x100) and a silver (100) at the 2001 world championships in Edmonton, Alberta.

The PTI guys, Kornholer and Wilburn did a piece during halftime of Monday night football. They were gushing about the great appology she gave. Even went as far as saying, "if Mcgwire appologized like Jones did he would be in the hall of fame".

You would think, after listening to them, she is a victim. I was even starting to feel sorry for her, until I came to my senses and realised the ever present media objective.

After lying about her use for several years she gets caught, fesses up and is hoping to get sympathy points for saying she is sorry. Why bring McGwire into the picture? He didn't lie for years and years and make adament denials. Wilbon and Kornwiser just doing their thing.

Apologize for what?
There has never been any evidence that McGwire ever used any illegal or banned performance enhancing drugs. The only confirmed performance supplement that McGwire used was Androstenedione. Andro was not banned, not illegal, and not a prescription drug. You could walk into f*cking Wal-Mart and buy the stuff! Yet the fix is in with the Hall voters. McGwire is 'Guilty for Life' for doing nothing. Meanwhile, Barry Bonds is confirmed to have used The Cream and The Clear (and HgH by rumor), the most potent illegal PEDs the world has ever known, and he is not only guaranteed to make the Hall on his first ballot, he is still getting paid millions to play the damned game. He has never suffered any penalties for his permanent butchering of baseball history. Not a fine, not a suspension, not even a 'statement of disapproval' from Emperor Selig. IMO, behind Osama and Bill Clinton, Barry Bonds is the world's biggest villain.

Amen brother, exactly how I feel and well put. He's got nothing to apologise for and BTW he never lied about it either.

I was going to post this myself, thanks for setting the record straight. This guy was vilified and practically ran out of baseball for using a substance that was not even banned at the time. Compare that to how Bonds, et al have been treated for using a banned substance AND lying about it.Edited by: White Shogun

Exactly, I clearly remember McGuire admitting he took Kreitine to add power to his swing and it was not illegal as far as the law or MLB at the time. MLB has since banned the substance, but at the time had not.

McGuire's feats were accomplished legally. You could say the legal drugs he took gave him an advantage over the Babe Ruth's and Hank Aarons of the past, but it doesn't mean he should be denied Cooperstown! McGuire should have the record of most HRs in a season not that fraud Barry Bonds!

Sorry to make two posts in a row, but my personal theory in regards to roids is that European Sprinters use them too, but at a lower rate than the Carribeaners and Americans. Kenteris was on roids when he ran his 19.8 IMO.

But that withstanding, I think that roids work better on people of West African decent which has taken whites away from being competitive in the short sprints like we used to be. The top white on roids might be able to run a 9.90, but the top black on roids can run a 9.74. The top clean white the world has ever seen might run a 9.95. The top clean black the world has ever seen might run 9.90. There are genetic differences on how blacks and white's bodies respond to roids, which is why we don't see lots of Valeri Borzovs and Armin Harys at the top of the class like in the old days. This is the only explanation I can reasonably conclude!

Did MLB ban creatine? It is a very popular supplement. It is a natural substance found in many foods, particularly red meat. An athlete eating a couple or three beef steaks in a day would consume the same amount of creatine that is found in the typical daily dosage used for maintenence. I have been on an exercise program and bought creatine monohydrate. It seemed to make my muscles harder and I found I could get a couple more reps in my weight lifting routine and seemed to have a bit more stamina and power. I gained a few pounds after a couple weeks, but since then the muscles have softened somewhat and my weight is the same as it was before using the stuff. I have done some reading on the subject and my experience is not uncommon. Some writers suggest creatine should be cycled otherwise it will not be effective.

Androstein is the supplement Mcguire took that was banned. Creatine is legal and works allot better anyways. Andro is crap.

Maybe if sports organizations instituted stupid punishments (life in prison, million dollar fines, etc.) as a consequence for stupid behavior (cheating in competition) it would reduce the inappropriate behavior.
