Dylan Windler erupted for 41 points (on 12-20 shooting) and 12 rebounds last night in a Belmont victory.

Fletcher Magee scored 30 (11-15 from the floor) in another Wofford win.

Sam Merrill dropped 35 (10-20 from the floor) at San Diego State in a loss.

Utah State is a young team that usually starts 3 or 4 White players, but they frequently have 5 White players on the court when they go to their bench. they’re small, but they’re a good shooting team that does a good job defensively. Aggies might be trending in the right direction.

looking back through this thread, i didn’t see another small school player with BIG talent: senior Nick Mayo of Eastern Kentucky.

Mayo is a man amongst boys in the OVC (and on his poor team), being named freshman of the year AND first team all-conference as a freshman ... and every year sense. the 6-foot-9 stretch four is dominant on both ends of the floor, scoring nearly 23 points per outing, grabbing better than 8 boards, swatting nearly 2 shots and better than 1 steal per game. he is adept in the post, where he favors a fade-away over either shoulder, and on the perimeter, knocking down better than one three-pointer per contest. and just when you think he’s content to let his skills do the talking, he’ll drive to the rim and dunk on your head!

EKU is not fun to watch, but Nick Mayo is the real deal. he has NBA-level talent, but that doesn’t mean he’ll get a fair shot at playing in the Association.

Kyle Guy scored a game-high 20 points, including back-to-back three-pointers in the final two minutes to clinch a win for #4 Virginia over #8 North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ty Jerome added 15 points and 11 assists (with just 2 turnovers), and UVA’s defense completely disrupted any offensive rhythm the Tarheels hoped to find, holding UNC to 35% shooting from the floor for the game. a hat tip goes out to Virginia center Jack Salt, as well, whose stellar defensive contributions rarely make much of a mark on the box score.

the win was a nice bounce back after a tough (and crazy) loss on Saturday at Duke. as an aside, isn’t it “weird” how White players “can’t play defense,” yet Virginia starts three White players, almost exclusively plays man-to-man, and are one of the nation’s elite defensive units? they also get solid contributions off the bench from the long and athletic Huff.

for Carolina, Luke Maye struggled to score but pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Dylan Windler was named the College Basketball National Player of the Week after his stellar performances in Belmont’s two most recent contests. quoting from a recent press release:
The senior wing went on the road and helped Belmont keep its at-large case respectable thanks to wins at Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State. The Bruins are 19-4 and coach Rick Byrd seems to have one of his best teams ever.

Windler averaged 30.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals last week, highlighted by a career-high 41 points in the 96-86 win against Morehead State. In that game, Windler hit eight 3-pointers. The 41 is one point short of Belmont's single-game record since the program went to Division I in 1999-00.

In the previous game, Windler has 20 points and 14 boards against EKU. Per Belmont, Windler is the only player in college basketball putting up better than 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. (His exact averages: 20.3, 10.3, 2.6.)

With a true shooting percentage of 64.7, Windler is one of the more efficient players in college basketball. Plus, he ranks as one of the elite defensive rebounders, grabbing 25.5 percent of Belmont's boards on that end of the floor when he's in the game.

Windler shoots better than 40% from three-point range, as well, which was on display again the previous week when he scored 20 consecutive points for his Bruins in a seven-minute stretch to rally Belmont and mount a comeback win over Austin Peay. he scored 33 points in that game (on 12-15 shooting) and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Windler has been named one of 10 finalists for the Julius Erving Award, given to the nation’s top small forward.

***********************

Wofford’s Fletcher Magee has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week (again) after his historic 3-point shooting performance. he averaged 31 points and shot 57.1 percent from the floor in leading the Terriers to wins against ETSU and Western Carolina. he also moved into second place (ahead of J.J. Redick) in NCAA Division I history in career 3-pointers and into the top 10 in career scoring in SoCon history. the sharpshooter went 15-24 from long range in the two games, and has shot 54% from deep over his last five outings.

if their terrific seasons continue, it looks like both Wofford and Belmont could earn at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament, even if they get upset in their conference tourneys. if so, these two players would finally get a chance to shine on the national stage.

if you want an under-the-radar prospect with out of the world athleticism and “upside,” then the name Daulton Hommes is for you. Hommes is a late-blooming, 6-foot-8 shooting guard who can jump out of the gym and fill up the stat sheet. a junior, he plays at a tiny school out West where he is scoring better than 22 a game while shooting WELL above the dream-line of 50-40-80 from the various marks (field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and free throw percentage for the non-hoopers among us). he’s also effective on the glass and as a rim protector.

rumor has it that he’s eligible to transfer after the season and be immediately eligible, and (just to give credence to my hype) at least a third of NBA teams have sent scouts to check him out. the best part about him, other than his eye-popping offensive repertoire that is, is the fact that he’s still very much learning to play in his body. he’s a true late bloomer. for example, he’s grown another inch since the video below from last year.

Matt McClung continues to impress. He scored 22 pts in a huge win over 17th ranked Villanova last night. McClung has really improved his shooting and was hitting 3 pointers
all night long. Some of his made 3 pointers were from 5 to 8 feet beyond nba range. The kid is amazing. As I've said before if he can continue to shoot the lights out, he becomes an
even bigger nightmare for any defense in the country. The kid can jump out of the gym, has strong ball skills, and all of the other intangibles needed to play in the nba. The only thing
I would say for him to work on alot is to continue to improve his defense. Georgetown has 16 wins at the moment & I 'm hoping they can put on a winning streak and find a way to sneak
into march madness. We need to see M.McClung in March putting on a national show!

do any of you remember those boring old days of Indiana contending for conference and national championships with a bunch of boring White overachieving gym rats? well, thankfully those days are over!!! now the Hoosiers have REAL talent with nary a blue collar to be seen on the floor! blue gums? well, that’s impolite, so nothing will be said.

the Hoosiers, have gone 8 deep so far tonight, and they’ve featured nothing but game-changing, electrifying, phenoms. with all that otherworldly talent, they’re sure to rise to the top with their 13-13 record. er, what? so much for that White privilege ...

Good observation JC. I doubt Miller will be coaching in Bloomington next year. His team has zero passion or intensity. His Star named Romeo is wayyyyy overrated and can't shoot a lick(23% from 3 last time I checked).

Miller, himself a former overachiever who could flat out fill it up, in an (i’m assuming) obviously boring and blue collar way, has gone out of his way to ignore players who look anything like the player he himself was. that being said, the 9th and 10th players to see the court tonight for Indiana were of the gym rat variety, including 6-foot-10 senior forward Evan Fitzner who promptly ignited his team with 6 quick points and a rebound. one wonders how this probable-racist was allowed to play.

...and the bright Iowa team (4-5 on the field as I’m watching) has a better record and is playing tough.....Down 2, 10 minutes left.....
The overachieving Davidson is beating RI.....Both games on Directv.

Iowa escaped. They needed this win bad. They should be considered a top 25 team. They just haven't been very consistant lately but this is 2 wins in a row. Start slow and build
some momentum before march madness begins. This was their 21st win of the year tonight. So glad they beat the Hoosiers.

Iowa is ranked in the Top 25, #21 if i recall correctly. the Hawkeyes need to figure out what has gone wrong with their offense, though, as they have really struggled, requiring late game/last second heroics from Bohannon (twice) and Weiskamp (once) in their last three wins (sandwiched around their loss to Maryland).

in related news, did you hear that Iowa’s basketball announcer was suspended for the remainder of the season for saying the big post player from Maryland was King Kong at the end of the game. he, of course, grovellingly apologized and said he would seek aid in “dealing with his unconscious bias.”

it seems we are surrounded by losers and cowards.

how is it possible, considering the “truth” of black superiority in basketball, that Northwestern has a losing record (now 12-15 after tonight’s loss to Wisconsin) when they only have one White scholarship athlete on their team? shouldn’t they be a dominant force in the relatively-White Big Ten conference with all those “phenoms?”

how do the “experts” explain such a “talented” team not being highly successful?

i guess they do what Andy Katz did for Indiana the other night, and keep using terms like “mouth watering” and “dynamic” despite loss after loss after loss and then explain how they should STILL be in the NCAA Tournament. seriously. he said that about Indiana.

Thanks for the insight. Absolutely love stories like this. Guy comes out of nowhere To possible NBA Prospect. Be interesting to see where he ends up, I'd like to see him end up playing a year of ball in a Power 5 Conference. Prove himself amongst the big boys.

Kinda reminds me of Zach Hankins who I know you're well aware of. D2 Stud last season who is having a really under the radar year at Xavier. 10ppg 5rpg and 1bpg in 20mpg average.

Duncan Robinson is another, though this Hommes may be better than both!

Coming into Saturday VA G Kyle Guy was on a tear but he had an off game yesterday in a road win. Virginia is considered one of the favorites to win the title and I tend to agree with that assessment.

Purdue's C Matt Haarms is a raw 7'3" C that needs to develop his game but lately he has been a real menace. Just a sophomore he is a fantastic athlete so it is a matter of gaining strength and improving his basketball skills. If he can do those things he probably has a shot at the NBA level. But there is a lot of work to be done especially on the offensive end.

Another player that has been mentioned several times in the past is Davidson's Jon Axel G (his last name is a bear) and he has been superb of late too. Just bagged a triple double against RI Friday night in a key win. Just a junior and not on the NBA radar (not yet at least) it will be interesting to watch his upward development over the rest of this season and next season.

Yes Indiana has gone nearly full caste and they are recruiting a lot of black "athletic" types but along with Kansas I think most people are surprised of how poorly IU are playing this season especially of late. I agree their head coach Miller doesn't seem to have them focused but I for one want them to continue to struggle since they have a high flying caste heavy team. And Romeo Langford is another one of those media heroes that grates.

Strange pretty much covers the Duke at Syracuse game. For starters HC Boeheim ran over and killed a pedestrian the other night. It was deemed an honest accident but you could tell he was shaken and that is something no one wants hanging over their head. Of course the family of the deceased are the biggest sufferers.

Meanwhile Duke avenged an earlier loss without media hero Zion W but just as I was giving up all hope on Alex O'Connell's season as a bench wipe up player, Coach K started him and he responded with a 20 pt. 5 rebound game going 6-9 from the field including 5-8 from three! He also had a highlight reel dunk. He has great hops and is a terrific athlete.

I don't think this O 'Connell starting thing will continue since Zion is expected back soon ( unless he shuts it down for the NBA which is unlikely) but F Jack White, who has been cold from the field for a long time, didn't play.

What is shocking though is Coach K inserted freshman F Joey Baker into the lineup which burnt his redshirt season. Baker didn't play well in his limited moments but you wonder what this all means? Will Baker start seeing more playing time or will his freshman season become basically a waste? A stunning development since it is highly unusual to burn a redshirt this late into a season.

Thanks for the heads up on Daulton Hommes JC. During HS he tore his ACL twice but seems to have recovered so now it is a matter of will NBA teams show interest in a player from a low level league?

Yes it has been a very frustrating season for Alex O'Connell this season. It is very hard for bench players, whose minutes are randomly scattered, to find a comfort zone.
But sometimes patience, which is a rare quality in this day and age of instant gratification, is rewarded. Perhaps by his senior year Alex will become a star. But you can see all of his untapped talent in his little highlight reel from last night's game.

See below.
