Interesting article about Joe.

What coach Mike Holmgren wanted was reliability. He knew Jurevicius, 31, was the classic, oversized - 6-5, 235 - possession receiver. But he's shown better speed than expected and a wicked stiff-arm that has allowed him to gain even more yardage after he catches the ball. Plus, his consistency has helped create a better receiving environment that has cut the drops nearly in half - from 43 to 23.

"I don't know where we'd be without him," Holmgren said. "He's a better receiver than I believed. He has great hands, he's a tough guy, but he's a little faster than people think he is. And he has a knack, I would say, to find the open spot. And I think my feeling is, the bigger the game, the better he is. And that's a good thing right now.

The latest issue of The Sporting News says that the Eagles may make a strong push to sign Jurevicius, a free agent, this offseason. The way it's phrased it sounds like they want Joe as a starter. Philly also reportedly covets DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, another free agent.Perhaps Andy Reid and Mike Holmgren aren't quite as blind, deaf and dumbnow when it comes to white football players. Better late than never as both are successful head coaches in the NFL.

I think Koren Robinson and TO may have had an impact on them. The Holmgren comments about Joe make me shake my head. He gives quite a lot of praise to him, which is understandable, then makes a revealing comment. " He's a better receiver than I believed."How can this be? Those of us who post here at Caste Football knew of Joe's ability. What, didn't Holmgren watch any game film of Joe, or did he fast forward to get a better look at the black receivers? So, after being a coach in the league for many years, he recently discovers Joe is pretty good? It would have been nice to see Joe get more playing time at the age of 25 instead of 31, but what the heck.Edited by: Bart

Ditto to everything you said Bart. Joe Jurevicious has been dominating cornerbacks with his speed and size since his days at Penn State and when he has been given the opportunity, the nfl. It's very revealing to hear Holmgren say he's better and faster than I thought, It's a shame that people like us who make posts in cyberworld know how to scout a football player(white) better than a sitting nfl coach. I wonder sometimes if a nfl coach will ever stumble over this site and what would they think if they did?

Nice praise.

Damn, he's 6-5 and weighing 235, too bad he wasn't born black, he'd be
the go to reciever. Joey is always clutch. I recall is acrobatic
catches for Tampa Bay a few years back. The man is good, give him his
recognition.

I found these highlights from Joe's three years with Tampa (2002-04). It's not easy to find YouTube highlights of White players who played more than a decade ago.

Jurevicius was drafted by the Giants in the second round in '98, during that run in the 1990s when the Giants were the league's closest thing to a caste-busting organization, as they also drafted Ed McCaffrey in the third round in '91, RB Sean Bennett in the fourth round in '99, and Jason Sehorn in the second in '94, before devolving into Ghana's Team. Jurevicius also played for Seattle and Cleveland, ending his NFL career with 323 catches for 4,119 yards, with a single season best of 706 yards with the Giants in '01. He was always underused compared to his talent level.

Jurevicius physically and talent wise was a lot like Jeff Samardzija, though Samardzija likely would have had a better NFL career as he was faster than Joe, who had average NFL speed for a receiver.
