Nigeria militants kill school children in Maiduguri

Suspected Islamist militants in north-east Nigeria have killed at least nine school children, the second targeted attack on students in recent days.

Gunmen believed to be from the Boko Haram group opened fire on the pupils, who were in school uniform, at a school on the outskirts of Maiduguri.

Boko Haram said the attack was to punish youngsters for helping the army.

Some survivors said it was a response to the emergence of vigilante groups in the town.

North-eastern Nigeria is under a state of emergency as the government tries to defeat an Islamist insurgency.

Witness Ibrahim Mohammed said he was taking exams in a classroom at Ansarudeen School when gunmen stormed the building.

"I saw five students sitting the exams killed on the spot," he said.
"Four others were killed as they were entering the school premises."

Hospital workers confirmed that the bodies of nine children, still in their uniforms, had been taken to the mortuary in Maiduguri.

A spokesman for Boko Haram handed a message to local journalists saying that the attack was to punish youngsters for assisting the army.

The BBC's Will Ross in Lagos says vigilante groups have been springing up in Maiduguri with young men wielding metal pipes, clubs and machetes handing suspected militants over to the army.

A military spokesman said all those handed over would be given a fair hearing.

However, with hundreds of people being held in detention and few ever coming to court, there is a danger that the vigilante groups could be used to settle scores, our correspondent says.

On Sunday, a school in Damaturu was attacked by suspected Boko Haram gunmen and 13 people including students and teachers were killed.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan imposed a state of emergency on north-east Nigeria last month and thousands more troops were sent to fight the Islamist militants.

So far there is no evidence to suggest that large numbers of Boko Haram fighters have been killed, our correspondent adds.

Nigeria's Zamfara state violence 'kills 48'

_55783677_nigeria_zamfar_1011.gif

Gunmen have killed 48 people in an attack on a village in Nigeria's Zamfara state, an official says.

They arrived before dawn riding motorbikes, a state spokesman said.

They then climbed a hill overlooking the village and opened fire indiscriminately before carrying out house-to-house attacks, he said.

The attack is said to be linked to an on-going feud involving cattle thieves in the northern state - there were similar attacks last year.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous state and biggest oil producer, is also battling an insurgency by militant Islamists.

However, the latest violence is not believed to be linked to the insurgency, says BBC Nigeria correspondent Will Ross.

"There was an attack by armed bandits early Tuesday on Kizara village where 48 residents were killed in apparent targeted killings by cattle rustlers that have been terrorising the state for some time now," said Zamfara government spokesman Ibrahim Birnin-Magaji.
Those killed included the local chief, the chief imam and the head of a vigilante group in the village, he added.

Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen arrived in Kizara before dawn on motorbikes, our correspondent says.

Mr Birnin-Magaji told AFP news agency the attackers took positions on a hill, before shooting indiscriminately.

"They later moved house to house, telling residents that they were looking for members of local vigilante [groups] whom they said had been disturbing them," he is quoted as saying.

7-Year-Old Girl Raped to Death in South Africa

This sadly is not a unique story. In South Africa horrors like these are no longer shocking.

In my article this week, South Africa’s Hell on Earth, I briefly described some of the big picture statistics about what South Africa has become.

South Africa has the most rapes per capita of anywhere in the world. 3,600 rapes happen in South Africa every day. 40% percent of South African women will be raped. In one survey, 1 in 4 men admitted to being rapists. 1 in 10 of those admitted to raping little girls. Children are believed to be the victims of 41% of the rapes in the country.

28% of the schoolgirls in one area were HIV positive and where 1 in 3 girls have been sexually assaulted before their 18th birthday. A third of pregnant women have been found to be HIV positive making it a curse that is being passed on to the next generation.

Convoy attack kills 3 children, 19 adults in Central African Republic

(CNN) -- Gunmen launched grenades and used machetes against Muslims being evacuated in a truck convoy in Central African Republic, killing at least three children and 19 adults, a humanitarian group said Saturday.

At least 23 more people, including children, were injured in Friday's attack and were being treated in a hospital in Bouar, in the northwestern part of the country, said Michael McCusker with Save the Children in Bangui, the nation's capital.

The African country has been wracked with such serious religious and ethnic violence, including between Muslims and Christians, that the United Nations has said it fears a genocide could be brewing, and aid groups warn of a humanitarian crisis.

The convoy was carrying mostly Muslim families from the village of Vakap when a grenade was launched into the trucks, said officials with Save the Children, a U.K.-based aid group.

Attackers hacked many victims with machetes, the group said.

Eyewitnesses in Bangui said a crowd accused the man of being a Seleka member, before members of the Central African Armed Forces (Faca) stabbed and kicked him and pelted him with rocks.

"They proceeded to mutilate his body and then set the body on fire," Peter Bouckaert, Human Rights Watch's emergencies director, who was at the scene, told the BBC.
"It was yet another horrific scene - one of many we've seen over the last few days in the capital Bangui."

Mr Bouckaert said that as he was taking pictures to document what he described as a "crime", a group of uniformed soldiers "rushed to the body to pose smiling with the burning corpse in front of us".

Nigeria attack: Scores killed in Katsina state

At least 69 people have been killed in an attack on villages in Katsina state, north-western Nigeria, officials and witnesses say.

Witnesses say the attackers rode motorcycles into villages in broad daylight and killed whoever they found. It is not clear who carried out the attack. Witnesses say some of the assailants were ethnic Fulanis but so were many of the victims.

Islamist militant group Boko Haram has also carried out attacks in the region.
Nigerian newspapers describe the assailants as cattle rustlers.

Local MP Abdullahi Abbas Machika said 47 people were buried in one village alone in Katsina state following Wednesday's attack.

Nigeria: Stampede in Abuja's stadium kills jobseekers

A stampede among jobseekers taking a recruitment test in the national stadium in the Nigerian capital Abuja has left many people dead and injured.

A journalist for French news agency AFP said he had counted seven corpses.

The stampede came during a recruitment exercise by the immigration department. Tens of thousands had turned up to take the test, according to reports.

There is a high level of unemployment in Nigeria especially among young people. In 2011, it stood at 23.9%.

Survivor Rosemary Ogida told AFP that she could remember being picked up by three men.

"I cannot even imagine the number of people that stamped on me," she said.

Rwanda is beginning a week of official mourning to mark the 20th anniversary of the country's genocide on Monday.

From April to July 1994
, some 800,000 people were slaughtered in Rwanda by ethnic Hutu extremists. They were targeting members of the minority Tutsi community, as well as their political opponents, irrespective of their ethnic origin.

Anywhere negroes inhabit is hell on earth but Liberians seem to engage in another level of savagery.

Since liberals believe in extreme egalitarianism and that all peoples are the same, how do they explain Liberia? They have the same constitution at the USA. Shouldn't that bring them prosperity? Shouldn't they at least be better off than other African nations that don't have the "magic document"?
