With equal opportunity, the ultra-versatile Rex Burkhead could become a player in the mold of Falcons RB, Devonta Freeman. Both have similar builds (Rex is 2" taller and slightly heavier) and measurables (Rex had a better 10-yard split and 3-cone drill), run tough, block well in pass protection, and have great hands out of the backfield.

At the very least, Burkhead could become a heavily-rotated 3rd down back similar to Theo Riddick, Charlie Sims, Duke Johnson, Gio Bernard, Ryan Matthews, or the elite Danny Woodhead (who just led the NFL in receiving yardage for a RB with 755 yards). But instead, Rex is stuck behind the plodding Jeremy Hill and the talented, yet injury-prone Gio Bernard.

Rex seems like a great guy, I hope he gets a fair chance and becomes a star...

Rex is a helluva an athlete! As an 8th grader he was throwing down dunks at 5'8 ! He's a legend in Plano and beloved by Nebraska fans and CFB fans nationwide. All he needs is a Damn chance! He would be a versatile threat if given 10-15 carries and 5-10 targets receiving a game. This is a bold statement but he has 1000 yard rushing and 1000 yard receiving potential. Will he ever get a chance?! Apparently only if the Patriots sign him, what the hell.

**Also McCaffrey dude not to nitpick. But you just posted a thread about a 5'10 160 walk-on to Wisconsin that is probably about 10the string right now. Show respect where respect is due. Rex had a decorated HS career(4Star) with offers from Nebraska, Auburn, Louisville, Cal,Michigan, Stanford , Mississippi, Texas A&M , Va Tech, and Texas Tech.. Maybe he's no Christian McCaffrey(Elite Freakish Talent in his own right), but not many guys are. Both are needed to make a crack in the system. There will be no great white RB that will turn the tides, instead we need 5-10 prospects every year!

I would like to see Rex get a fair chance. In my opinion he could be a starter but we know no team is jumping to take a chance on him. Didn't the Bengals change his postion to more of a wideout? They have not used him the right way and his prime years are never coming back. Hope this doesn't happen to more of our guys. It's so rare that a white rb gets a chance to start yet alone play.

Burkhead had a great preseason game the other day but of course is still buried on the depth chart behind Hill and Bernard. In a league where running backs go down weekly, on the Bengals they've stayed pretty healthy since Burkhead was drafted. His rookie contract is up after this season, but what team is going to pay for a White running back who's been in the league four years and almost never run the ball? It will take injuries in 2016 if he's ever to get an opportunity to show off his talent. This article portrays him as the stereotypical "good soldier" White backup, who apparently even has a room brightening smile.

Patient Rex Burkhead reminds of his ability

by Paul Dehner Jr.

WEST CARROLLTON — Few positions in the NFL take more pounding than running backs. Across the league last year, teams were forced into second, third and fourth strings. The running back by committee is more the norm than exception.

Yet, in Cincinnati, for the last two seasons Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard have been stalwarts. One of the two started each of the last 34 games in the backfield.

Behind those two, waiting patiently has been Rex Burkhead. Now entering his fourth season and final year of his rookie contract out of Nebraska, he has fewer carries than any running back in his 2013 draft class still in the league. His 13 carries rank 21st out of 21.

At that position, you’d expect frustration, depression, malcontent, maybe even lobbying for a trade.

Not here. Not Rex. For the consummate good guy with a permanent smile, reality is the exact opposite, actually.
“Of all the running backs on our team, he might be the least maintenance guy we have,” running backs coach Kyle Caskey said. “He comes, does his job, everybody cheers him on because he finishes so well and he’s always running fast to the ball. People follow him even though he’s buried a little bit farther down on the depth chart.”

Burkhead produced new reasons to cheer him on Thursday in Detroit. Given his most significant playing time at the position since beating out Dan Herron as a rookie, he broke into the open field often with seven touches for 73 yards.
“The line did a tremendous job, even AJ (McCarron) checking the ball down to me,” Burkhead said. “It was fun. I think I was able to show multiple things doing the kick return as well. Getting a tackle on special teams too. A good opportunity for me and I enjoyed it.”

The other 31 teams should enjoy it as well. Burkhead is good enough to play in this league, but had the unfortunate position on this roster. But with the Detroit film on the record and two more weeks where he’ll get even more chances, this could end up his final audition for the 2017 season as a running back. Whether in Cincinnati or possibly another city where more opportunity is available. Thinking about that is only natural, but Burkhead tries to keep it to a minimum.

“You do a little bit, but at the same time I want to focus on this year,” he said. “That’s my main focus to get this team in a position where we can win the Super Bowl. Whatever role on the team I can help out the team I want to do. Whatever happens after the season happens.”

What’s happening now is the latest creativity to find ways to involve him. Last year, he spent a good portion of the season learning receiver. He is back to the running back room now, but spent time running the Wildcat formation as well - now inserting into the kick-return rotation.
He’s as versatile as any offensive player.

“When you get buried behind a couple guys like Jeremy and Gio we have to find different avenues to get him involved and get him the ball,” Caskey said. “It’s a good problem to have because he is so talented it gives you another weapon. With the running back situation it’s hard to say we are going to take one of those two guys off the field. But he’s fully capable if he ever gets a chance which he proved the other night in Detroit.”

Burkhead hopes the momentum carries over to the next two games even with the understanding that he’ll then revert back to playing the role of offensive afterthought. Just don’t expect any complaining or even anything but a wide smile and focus on his role.

“Just try to stay positive and stay patient even though it’s Year Four,” Burkhead. “That’s all you can do. Any time when you get an opportunity just try to make the most of it.”

Rex Burkhead finally gets his shot in Bengals’ loss to Ravens

The Bengals sixth round pick from the 2013 NFL Draft is finally getting a chance to show his worth. And, he played a great game on Sunday in Baltimore, proving to the Bengals he deserves more touches.
by Rebecca Toback@Rebecca_Toback

When Giovani Bernard went down with a torn ACL in the Bengals’ Week 11 loss to the Bills, it signaled an opportunity for Rex Burkhead to finally get his shot at proving his worth in the NFL.

Burkhead got just that in Week 12 as he played 38 snaps in the Bengals' loss to the Ravens, which is actually one snap more than starter Jeremy Hill played in the game.

“Gio is a very big part of what we do, but we still have to go forward,” Hill said after Sunday’s game. “Rex did a really good job for us today.”

That he did. Burkhead was the Bengals' leading rusher with 29 yards on five attempts (a 5.8 yard per carry average), including a long of 17 yards. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when the Bengals' leading rusher notches only 29 yards. Burkhead added to his total yardage on the afternoon with two catches for 19 yards. Coincidentally, he also had a 17 yard catch. The Bengals were slow to put their trust in Burkhead as he only carried the ball five times, and they will need to —and should— trust him more in the weeks ahead. Jeremy Hill had 12 rushes for 21 yards on Sunday, (a 1.75 yard per carry average), with the Bengals inexplicably running the ball only 17 total times (not including Andy Dalton's three running plays). Even against a tough defense like the Ravens’, the Bengals typically don’t succeed when they abandon the run game.

“It felt good to get out there, to get your hand on some balls and get some touches,” Burkhead said after the game. “I feel like I could have played better, of course. I’m never satisfied. I always look for ways to improve, but my number one priority is to get a win for this team, and we didn’t do that today.”

In the fourth quarter, Burkhead did the bulk of his damage, getting his hands on the ball five times, including three consecutive run plays where he accumulated 28 yards and netted the Bengals first downs on two of the three plays.

Prior to Sunday’s loss to the Ravens, Burkhead had 70 career rushing yards, 167 receiving yards, 1 rushing touchdown and 1 receiving touchdown. He has mostly made an impact on special teams during his time in Cincinnati, including being used as a return man this year. On six kickoff attempts this season, Burkhead has accumulated 114 yards including a long of 26 yards (averaging 19 yards per attempt). His impact is sure to increase in the five games ahead on offense. And, for Burkhead, it’s good timing as he’s set to become a free agent in March 2017.

“I haven’t had that many opportunities in my career, so finally I got some chances, and it felt good. I got into the rhythm. I was comfortable in the run game. I just went out there and tried to do my best,” Burkhead said.

Prior to last season, there was significant hype surrounding Burkhead and the impact he could make as a pass catcher. But, the Bengals have hardly utilized the player who many have referred to as an X-factor. Burkhead sounds like his has the right attitude and all the motivation necessary to try and steal some wins in the Bengals’ final games of the season.

“We’re disappointed, but we’re going to keep fighting,” he said. “That’s what this team is made of – high character guys who are going to keep fighting.”

Burkhead figures to be a big part of that fight for the rest of the season.

Results from Week 16:

Jeremy Hill: 7 carries for 8 yards, no receptions
Rex Burkhead: 12 carries for 42 yards, 4 receptions for 25 yards

Burkhead has outperformed Hill in average yards per rush in each of the five games since Giovanni Bernard was injured.

Hill starting with Week 12: 12/21; 23/33; 25/111; 20/43; 7/8. Total: 87/216, 2.5 yards per carry average.

Burkhead starting with Week 12: 5/29; 8/38; 9/45; 7/32; 12/42. Total 41/186, 4.5 yards per carry average.

Hill averaged less than 2.2 yards per carry in four of those five games; tonight was Burkhead's first game averaging less than 4 yards per carry at 3.5 but it was far better than Hill's pathetic 1.14. And other than possibly New England (which has a pretty good starter in Blount), the odds right now are that no teams will be interested in signing soon-to-be free agent Rex this offseason to be their starter.

Rex Burkhead could have been an every down back. For some reason he got burried on the depth charts. Gee I wonder
why that could be? They said he was always very good in practice yet they didn't want to play him in games. The coach even moved him to wide receiver for a while. Anything to keep a white man from being a running back. Racist NFL.

In a fair world, Rex would replace Hill, who is very mediocre even by AA black standards. Gio Bernard would serve as a good change of pace to Rex, the primary back.

Congrats to Rex on surviving his racial apprenticeship, it's taken him 4 years to get a shot but has proven he is by far the best healthy Bengal RB on their current roster! He's averaging 4.8 yards per carry(225 total) and is averaging 6 yards per catch. Bengals will probably stick with their overrated RBs in Hill and Bernard, but Rex SHOULD be generating interest amongst the rest of the league.

I knew James Starks is bad, but didnt know he's that bad since Packers "activate" Ripkowski's role to carry some balls, and I have the same feeling when check Hill's stats...
Give Burkhead more snaps!

And the best running back on the Cincinnati Bengals in 2016 in a runaway was Rex Burkhead:

Burkhead: 74 carries for 344 yards for an average rush of 4.6, well above the league average.
Jeremy Hill: 222 carries for 839 yards for an average rush of 3.8, below the league average.
Giovanni Bernard: 91 carries for 337 yards for an average rush of 3.7, below the league average.

Burkhead is also a better all-around back than the other two, as Hill is weak as a receiver and Bernard is too small to carry a heavy rushing load. Rex is the only complete back on the Bengals.

Please, Rex, don't quickly re-sign with the Bengals, who will only demote you behind the other two again. At least test the market first and see if there's any interest in paying you starter money or as a co-starter in an RBBC (running back by committee).

Good article on Rex.

"He proved today, man, he can run the football. I’d take him as a No. 1 any day of the week," Whitworth said. "I don’t think there’s too many teams where he wouldn’t fit. He runs the ball well. He’s got great agility. He’s got eyes, he’s got it all. The whole team has wanted him to get his opportunity and see what he does. Especially the defensive players because they know what Rex used to do to them. He’s a talented kid."

Burkhead's Week #17 performance made him the only white RB to rush for over 100 yards during the 2016 season.

About time he was given the ball. Amazing how poorly other players must play for a more talented white player to get into the starting role.

Truth on Burkhead

Truth about Rex Burkhead.

Stigma's such as these have followed him his entire career:

Power Back
Plodding
Lunch Pale carrying
Deceptive
Hard worker etc. etc.

Truth is:

He is a freak and top notch athlete with incredible football knowledge.

Lets compare him to the Bengals 2nd round and 1st RB pick of the 13 draft:

40 Yard Dash:
Gio 4.53 Ranked 8th

Rex: 4.73 Not Ranked

Bench Press:
Gio: Not Ranked
Rex: Ranked 13th

Vertical Leap:
Gio:33.5" Ranked 15th
Rex: 39" Ranked 2nd

Broad Jump:
Gio: 10'2" Ranked 6th
Rex: 10'5" Ranked 2nd

3 Cone Drill:

Gio: 6.91 Ranked 9th
Rex: 6.85 Ranked 4th

20 Yard Shuttle:
Gio: 4.12 Ranked 3rd
Rex: 4.09 Ranked 2nd

60 Yard Shuttle:
Gio: 11.41 Ranked 3rd

Rex: 11.51 Ranked 5th

So in head to head physical athletic tests Rex beats Gio: 5 tests to Rex and 2 to Gio.

Now you go and check out the NFL combine draft score and they show GIO as the #1 ranked RB draft prospect, yeah right ROTFLMAO.

Lets go to the highlight tape:

http://www.youtube.com/embed/XnxHQ2dhMF8

vs

http://www.youtube.com/embed/PyfpctaI99Y

NOT EVEN CLOSE, yet the bias there is in Marvin Sanders is obvious.

During the draft recap he stated Rex Burkhead played some FullBack at Nebraska. No he didn't.

Burkhead is a complete runningback. He can catch, block, read defenses, and most importantly RUN. His combine 40 was his only mistake and he is no 4.7 second back. He is a legit sub 4.6 and anything else that is required by an RB he has produced elite athlete type of numbers.

But Bennard from what Marvin Sanders is saying in code is basically he is safe, assured a spot and Rex will have to beat someone out and if not may be practice squad material.

Total BS.

Rex has as good or better agility, acceleration, vision, power, size, hands, and imo most importantly combination of all those skills. The only thing I would give Bennard is top speed and Bennard doesn't possess much more of that like many would like to think.

By the way, been lurking for awhile and decided to join, tired of the anti-white athlete BS that is taking over every sport imaginable in the U.S espeically college and especially NFL football.
Great post!

This is from Weenieworld's "Daily Dose" of NFL news. Guess who isn't mentioned? (Though the writer mentioned, Paul Dehner, does tweet "Rex will have shot at more $$ & opp elsewhere.")

I pray Rex doesn't re-sign with the Bengals. Even if he ends up being screwed by another team, that's still better than rewarding the organization that's screwed him for four years already by allowing them to keep doing it.

Jeremy Hillmay end up as Cincinnati’s “backup” running back in 2017, according toPaul Dehner of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Dehner expects the Bengals to add a running back through the NFL Draft andGiovani Bernard(knee) should return to a prominent role, which may leave Hill in the dust. The 2016 season was certainly not memorable for Hill, as he averaged 3.8 yards per carry and wasn’t able to excel in Bernard’s absence. If we cherry pick through Hill’s 2016 resume and remove his two outings against lowly Cleveland, Hill averaged just 3.0 yards per carry and did not top 100 yards against all other competition. A role as a goal line bruiser may be Hill’s ticket to staying fantasy relevant in the future.

Rex called an "under the radar" player in free agency. The sinister Pro Football Focus features prominently in this article, declaring that Burkhead "probably isn't an every down back." If there were no black starting QBs and one flashed the talent Rex has, every media outlet would be campaigning for him to become a starter, the blatant racist double standard that's fueled Amerika 2.0 for a long time now. And notice the pattern among the other "under the radar" free agents -- five of the six listed are White.

Rex Burkhead an under-the-radar player in NFL free agency

Rex Burkhead's value in free agency will be one of the toughest to project this offseason.

While the talented running back showed plenty of potential in his brief time as a featured back this season, he did it in only a handful of games, after never really playing significant snaps in his four year NFL career.

That’s why Pro Football Focus doesn’t have Burkhead among their top NFL free agents, but they do have him among their topunder-the-radar guys to watch for.

9. Rex Burkhead, RB,Bengals(74.5 PFF Grade)

Burkhead is an intriguing free agent this offseason, as he shows good ability to make defenders miss, with an elusive rating of 49.9 (albeit from a limited sample size). Burkhead has good vision and burst, with very little wear and tear with just 89 career carries. This past season, Burkhead finally got his chance following the injury toGiovani Bernard, and graded very well. On 74 carries, Burkhead averaged a solid 4.6 yards per carry, with 3.0 coming after contact. In the final game of the season, the Bengals fed the former Nebraska Cornhusker 27 times; he turned those opportunities into 119 yards, two touchdowns, and two missed tackles forced against one of the best run defenses in the NFL (Baltimore). While Burkhead probably isn’t an every-down back, he should be valuable to teams looking to add a change-of-pace back.

Other under-the-radar free agents PFF acknolwedged in their ranking include Ravens right tackle Ricky Wagner and fullback Kyle Juszczyk, Patriots safety Duron Harmon, Vikings receiver Adam Thielen and Packerscenter J.C. Tretter.

Rex Burkhead’s Deal Signals Major Role With Patriots
March 15, 2017 1:17 PM

ByMatt Dolloff, CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) — The Patriots signed free-agent running back Rex Burkhead on Tuesday, a signing that on the surface appeared to be a replacement for free agent Brandon Bolden as a key special teams player and backup running back.

The specifics of Burkhead’s deal are out, and they indicate that the Patriots envision a role for Burkhead that’s much bigger than that.

ESPN’s Field Yates tweeted the details of Burkhead’s contract with the Patriots on Wednesday. It’s a one-year deal with a $1.8 millionbasesalary, $1.1 million signing bonus, and $250,000 in per-game roster bonuses – a total cap hit of $3.15 million.

That’s no special-teamer.

The Patriots’ signing of Burkhead has the potential to be the replacement for free-agent back LeGarrette Blount. At 5-foot-10 and 214 pounds, Burkhead’s frame and skill set would certainly make him a candidate to carry the ball on early downs and in goal-line/short-yardage situations. He can also catch the ball, reeling in 17 of 20 targets for 8.5 yards per catch in 2016.

But what makes him even more of a candidate for that role is, again, that $3.15 million caphit. According to Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal, Burkhead is the first Patriots running back to be paid more than $2 million since Fred Taylor in 2010. It’s possible that Burkhead earns his keep by taking Blount’s early-down running role and assuming Bolden’s role on special teams; Mike Lombardi described Burkhead on Twitter as “the perfect four-down back for the Patriots.”

Whatever Burkhead’s role turns out to be, it’s clearly going to be more than a minor one. Bill Belichick loves versatile players and Burkhead can certainly deliver in that department. Belichick might literally never take him off the field.

Nice article.......I've been letting the DWFs on several forums know that T-Rex wasn't signed to play special teams........now that we know it is $3.15 and the biggest contract for a NE RB since 2010......it's pretty obvious he will be expected to play a significant roll at RB.

By the way......does anybody have the old video of Rex and Plano running all over Dallas Carter when he was in HS. I've looked for it but can't find anything......

Burkhead's signing by the Patriots is hands down the best news of the off season. He could really thrive in New England with his skill set and the way the Patriots use their running backs. Now if the Packers draft McCaffrey......

Burkhead was also the option quarterback when he played at Nebraska. Darn good one, too.

This is stupendous news. After the Patriots added several high-profile black free agents (Gilmore, Ealy, Allen, Cooks) this off-season, there was a feeling that the team was getting darker. However, the addition of Burkhead is one of the best signings the club has had in years. Dion Lewis and James White are talented scat-backs who rarely receive carries (aside from shotgun-based draw plays), but Burkhead every bit as talented as a pass-catcher. He also has a much larger frame and is a far better pass-blocker. Blount will be 31 years old next season and is seeking a big payday in free agency after an admittedly stellar 2016 season. It's doubtful he returns to NE. Brandon Bolden, also a FA, received 3 touches all of last season and clearly doesn't fit into their offense. He could return, but likely as a special teamer.

With so much offensive talent in the receiving game (Gronkowski, Edelman, Cooks, Hogan, Mitchell, Burkhead, Lewis, and White) and given that Burkhead plays the slot so well, it might actually be for the best that Danny Amendola is released. Perhaps he can sign with another team and flourish in the twilight of his career? I'd rather see him move on than ride the bench in NE and wait for one of the starting WR's to get hurt.
