Colonel Reb, i hope you don't mind a little help. i got excited about Kyle Bell, and wanted to take a look at what is going on with the CSU Rams this year. so here are the white starters as of the end of spring ball.
QB Caleb Hanie (all 5 scholarship quarterbacks are white, including multi-dimensional red-shirt freshmen, Sean McDougal and Nick Neuenfeldt.)
RB Kyle Bell<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
WR Luke Roberts
H-back (CSU rarely uses a fullback) Kory Sperry (who i think is white, but might be mixed)
TE Chris Kawulok
LT Cole Pemberton
LG Scott Benedict
C Nick Allotta
RG Adrian Martinez
RT Sane Stratton

RE Jesse Nading
DT Blake Smith
NG Erik Sandie
LE Wade Landers
WLB Jake Pottorff
MLB Jeff Horinek
FS Klint Kubiak
SS Mike Pagnotta (both safeties are backed up by white athletes, Zac Bryson at free and Jake Galusha at strong)

CSU looks to be starting 10 whites on offense, and 8 on defense.

athletic QBs McDougal (whose brother is the 5th all-time leading rusher for the Rams) and Neuenfeldt (6-4 and runs a 4.5) could eventually be moved to another position, but they are both going to get a shot at QB. Johnny Mosure is in the mix for the back-up tailback spot after looking impressive in the spring.

CSU may be my favorite team to root for this fall, along with BYU.

a couple of blurbs about the two dual-threat redshirt freshmen QBs...

The most recognizable name among local fans is Arvada West quarterback Sean McDougal, who would have caused a family insurrection had he committed to any other school.

McDougal has two older brothers who played for the Rams. Matt was a kicker in the mid-90s. Kevin, CSU's standout running back in the late '90s, is the fifth-leading rusher in school history.

The latest McDougal to put on the green and gold is projected as a run/pass quarterback in the Bradlee Van Pelt mold.

For obvious reasons, CSU coaches are fond of that Van Pelt era...

With Wednesday's signing of Arvada West's Sean McDougal (6-1.5, 200 lb) and Scottsdale, Ariz.'s Nick Neuenfeldt (6-4, 240 lb), Colorado State will have five scholarship quarterbacks on its roster for the first time in several years. Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Dan Hammerschmidt said the Rams have been playing with fire by only carrying three the past few years, but thanks to the latest signees, they now have depth and a lot of healthy competition.

The Rams had intended to take just one quarterback in the class, and after getting a commitment from their top quarterback target McDougal in December, were assumed to use their final few scholarships in other areas. But, Neuenfeldt's athleticism was too good to ignore. He threw for 1,866 yards (on 113-of-171 passing) and 16 touchdowns his senior season, and added 302 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. He has been clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.52.

"They were too good of football players to pass up," Hammerschmidt said. "And when it comes down to it, you just have to take the best players. Obviously, you can't take eight quarterbacks. But one thing about us, we went with three (scholarship) quarterbacks for three to four years. You've got to have a minimum of four guys on scholarship. I bet if you checked a lot of the people, they've got four to five and some people with six."

McDougal, who threw for a Class 5A-leading 2,888 yards and 37 touchdowns vs. 6 interceptions during his All-Colorado senior season, committed during his official visit in December -- the same weekend that Neuenfeldt was on campus for his visit. The two were standing next to each other in a food line when McDougal proclaimed he was committing to CSU.

The fact that the Rams had received a commitment from one quarterback already didn't deter Neuenfeldt from remaining interested in CSU. According to Hammerschmidt, Neuenfeldt wasn't put off by the competition, but simply wanted to know that regardless of how many quarterbacks the Rams had on their roster, that he would get a legitimate shot to play the position.

That was one of the reasons more big-name schools weren't showing up as finalists on his list of college choices. And the lack of other schools' interest is baffling to Hammerschmidt.

"I do not know," Hammerschmidt said when asked why other schools passed on Neuenfeldt. "That's the big question -- I have no idea. He's a great student -- had Ivy League schools after him. I think it was because he wanted to get a shot a quarterback. And, UTEP said he could and a couple other people said he could. Arizona State and three or four other schools -- I don't know who they all were -- but a lot of people were saying H-back, running back, linebacker. That kid was being recruited by some big schools at other positions. He wanted a shot at quarterback. He didn't want anybody to promise him that he is going to be the quarterback or play quarterback forever, but he wants to go give a shot at playing QB and see whether he can do it or not. We might as well give him a chance."

****************************************

As for the new guys, McDougal and Neuenfeldt will redshirt in 2006, barring a flurry of injuries ahead of them, and both will work out at quarterback through next year's spring ball. The player that shows the most improvement and the most promise for the future will remain at quarterback. The other player will then likely switch positions. For McDougal, that switch would probably be to safety. For Neuenfeldt, head coach Sonny Lubick said he could play any number of positions, including tight end, running back, linebacker, or safety.

It's easy to see that with Lubick's defensive background, he wouldn't mind seeing both players on the defensive side of the ball someday, but that both could contribute and excel in various areas -- including quarterback.

"We liked (Neuenfeldt) as an athlete," Lubick said. "He can run the football. He's a good student. He's 6-foot-3 and about 240 lb, and they timed him at some camps at 4.5 (forty-yard dash), which is pretty darn good. Let's say he (runs a) 4.6, there's a good safety, there's a good linebacker, there's a running back. Plus, there's the fact he did play quarterback a lot for his high school team. We'll give both guys a good look and see how it goes and see how it develops. This will work itself out kindly for all of us because they're both excellent athletes."

Lubick also talked about how the Rams' were fortunate that McDougal has family ties to CSU, otherwise, it might have been tough for the Rams to get him. Sean's dad Mike played linebacker for CSU in the 1960s, his brother Matt was a punter in the mid-90s, and brother Kevin was a star running back in the late 90s.

"I'm glad the other two young men (Matt and Kevin) had great experiences here, because that could go either way," Lubick said. "If one of the older brothers said they didn't get a fair shot or didn't have a good experience, then that's the end of that family forever. I guess it's like going into get a beer, you have one bad beer, you don't go back again or something like that.

"I think what happens is that Sean, as we all know, is one of the better quarterbacks in this state. Usually the youngest brother ends up being the best of all, although Matt and Kevin were should good contributors and great players for Colorado State. I do believe a lot of people were talking to him early on, and I don't think he got an honest shot (with other schools recruiting him) probably because everyone assumed he was going to go to Colorado State."

Now that both McDougal and Neuenfeldt are coming to CSU, the Rams have a total of five athletic, mobile quarterbacks on the roster ready to fight for their spot. Let the battle begin.

I didn't count Sperry as white last year, but either way, CSU will be one of my favorite teams to watch. I am waiting for the BYU/CSU game in Provo. Thanks for the post Jimmy!

Some CSU news: Rocky Mountain News reports that black backup DT Devin McWilliams was arrested Sunday for disorderly conduct and prohibited use of a firearm. His punishment from Coach Lubick has not been announced yet.

Also, FS Klint Kubiak is getting better from a leg injury he had during the off-season. He is participating through half of the daily practice time.

Colorado State started 9 whites on Defense (using the on screen pictures as a reference) today v. Colorado. The Blacks being the two corners.

The Senior Quarterback looks very good. Bell has been impressive behind a suspect O-Line. Of course the announcers have mentioned that he isn't fast. In fact as I type this they just said he is Big, Slow and can read holes. Funny, he seems to be outquicking the Black Defenders pretty reguarly.

On the other side of the field, Cody Hawkins looks very impressive as well at QB for the Buffs. They have a White Wideout who of course had to walk on, who has some nice catches.

Of course Colorado State had a Black WR make a catch then go into his chest pounding, "I'm so Bad Ass" routine that cost the team 15 yards. Its amazing that you don't see that from the White Atheletes.

The Rams held tough against #10 California losing 34-28. The same Cal team that whipped Tennessee last week 45-31. Bell had a good game rushing 26 times for 102 yds and 2 TDs.

Yes, Coach Lubick was "ushered" into retirement with a large press conference/honor ceremony. I hate to see the man go, but maybe his successor will be as open minded about his white backs.

Lubicks son is still a coach with the program, hopefully he has the same mindset on white athletes as his father.

Well, to do so, he must regain his starting spot from "Predator" Johnson. I believe he can, but we'll have to see what the coachng changes are, as they may have a profound impact on whether Kyle is given a chance to start again.

Bills assistant Fairchild to return to CSU as coach

DENVER -- Sonny Lubick was Steve Fairchild's mentor at Colorado State. Now, the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator is Lubick's replacement with the Rams.

Fairchild, a former Colorado State quarterback and assistant coach, was hired as the school's 19th head coach Wednesday.

"We are pleased that Steve Fairchild, with his significant coaching expertise and history at Colorado State, is going to return to his roots as a champion for our football program," Colorado State president Larry Edward Penley said in a statement released by the Fort Collins school. "His positive reputation precedes him."

Lubick, who was let go last month after 15 mostly successful seasons with Colorado State, was in Montana for family reasons and couldn't be immediately reached for comment. His son, Marc, an assistant coach for his father, said his dad is pleased with the decision.

"He likes Steve and is impressed with him," Marc Lubick told The Associated Press. "The hire makes sense. I think Steve was the best guy they could've gotten. He worked well with my dad and he's been successful at the next level."

In a statement released by Colorado State, Fairchild said, "I am honored by the opportunity to return to Colorado State University as head coach. This is an exciting time for my family, as well as myself."

Fairchild has already started to assemble his staff, bringing back former Colorado State assistant Larry Kerr as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator, and Marc Lubick in a role to be determined. Fairchild will also keep Tom Ehlers in the position of director of football operations.

The 49-year-old Fairchild was a member of Lubick's first staff at Colorado State, along with Kerr. Fairchild was the quarterbacks coach from 1993-96 before taking over as the Rams' offensive coordinator for four seasons. Colorado State won five conference titles in his eight years as an assistant coach.

He left for Buffalo in 2001 to serve as the Bills' running backs coach for two seasons. Fairchild is in his second season as the Bills' offensive coordinator after tutoring under Mike Martz with the St. Louis Rams.

"I really think a lot of Steve Fairchild," Bills coach Dick Jauron said after practice Wednesday. "You never want to lose a tremendous coach. But you do want him to advance."

Fairchild won't leave the Bills until after the season. The Bills (7-6) are in the middle of the AFC playoff race with three games remaining in the regular season.

"I do appreciate CSU and the Bills for allowing me to finish out my responsibilities here in Buffalo prior to assuming my new role," Fairchild said.

Colorado State officials understand his commitment to the Bills.

"We knew from the outset and were comfortable with the dedication he has to his team," said CSU athletic director Paul Kowalczyk, who will have an introductory teleconference with Fairchild on Thursday. "It is that type of value system -- commitment, integrity, honesty, accountability and responsibility -- that had him at the top of our list since the beginning."

The Rams are borrowing a page from Mountain West Conference rival Air Force by hiring an NFL assistant coach to take over the program.

The Falcons hired Troy Calhoun last year after the retirement of Fisher DeBerry. Calhoun, who was lured away from the Houston Texans, was the league's coach of the year after guiding the Falcons to a 9-3 record and a spot in the Armed Forces Bowl.

The Rams are hoping the approach serves them well, too.

"He [Fairchild] has had a reputation of developing young players and helping them reach their maximum potential," Kowalczyk said. "That is an attractive trait in our program."

Colorado State linebacker Jeff Horinek was just thankful the process was complete, and the Rams know who will be running the show next season.

"He has a solid reputation," Horinek said of Fairchild. "He seems to be a good fit."

Sonny Lubick was asked by Kowalczyk to step down a few days before the Rams' season-ending win over Wyoming on Nov. 23. But Lubick refused because he did not want to quit on his team.

He led the Rams to nine bowl games and at least a share of conference titles in six seasons, compiling a 108-74 record along the way.

Lubick has been asked to stay on with the school as a fundraiser, but hasn't made a decision yet.

As white friendly as Colorado State has been in the past, the bottom line is that anything is possible from here on out. The new regime may decide to go in a new direction, and plan for the future, meaning seniors (no matter how good they are) will lose time to developing underclassmen.

If I were Kyle Bell, I'd seriously consider transferring. When healthy, this man is an elite runner. Any coach who takes the time to watch 2005 game film of Bell would easily see what he brings to the table.

Kyle Bell needs to pretend like he is in high school again and go through the recruiting process all over again.

The problem with transfering is that it has to be downward, unless he has his redshirt year remaining. At least that's how I remember it when I was playing college sports. It was something like you had 5 years to play your 4 years and transferring requires you to sit out one of those years. I know there are exceptions and all, but I'd hate to see Bell transfer somewhere like Northern Colorado, or pick your D1AA school, and allow the scouts to totally discount him based upon his level of competition.

I think that's the biggest flaw with the way the NCAA does business, and that's saying something, that they allow coaches to come and go, but don't allow athletes the same courtesy when a coach does decide to leave.

Thought the Rams needed some time in the spotlight. Has there been any news on the new coaches view of Kyle Bell? I see that they are also recruiting Brent Michaels a physical runner with great speed. Although they they havent offered him yet.Edited by: celticdb15
