Kelly Poppingamust bethe younger brother of BYU alum Brady, who starts at OLB for the Packers despite being routinely cited by the Caste media for an alleged lack of athleticism.

It's great to see you doing the College Football startinglineups again, Reb.

Yes, Kelly is a good one, just like Brady. Don, I've been planning on starting these sooner, but computer problems, women, and a busy schedule have kept me away. I'm glad I have some help this year, as Jared is doing the PAC 10.

Anyone know if Max Hall has QB potential? The QB factory of BYU was started up again with John Beck, hopefully it will continue.

BYU has had a starting all-white defense for a number of consecutive years
now. I love playing with them on NCAA Football for playstation 2. I always
had them as my team in college.

Sorry warrior16, but since I arrived on campus in 2005, BYU has had one black starter at CB, Justin Robinson, and he has now graduated. I don't know when the last all white starting defense was at BYU, but I can tell you that it could not have been any more recent than 2004, and I doubt it was that year either. BYU is more white right now than they were when they won the 1984 National Championship. They started 5 blacks that year.

My apologies Colonel_Reb. That is a sage point you made about the teams
now, compared to the 1984. My freshmen year of college was in 2001 at
Auburn, and to this day, my favorite game of all-time is that years battle
between BYU and a virtually all-black Miss. State team, that BYU won - I
think - 41-38. I believe that is the game Luke Staley was injured though.

Yep, that was an awesome game. I think a lot of us accidentally overstate the number of whites on a team for a few different reasons. No need to apologize for it, as I have done it myself more than once.

I think BYU is on the road back to prominence again. The program has been in disarray for a few years now, but QB John Beck brought them back and now it will be up to Max Hall to pick up where John Beck left off

Draft Daddy has Austin Collie listed as one of the top sophomore WRs in the country, so he's obviously back from his two-year mission. He looked like a big-time receiver as a freshman, hope he gets some serious playing time this season.

Yep, Austin is back! I read an article about him in Athlon's magazine. Here's a quote.

"It is unusual for a team's best receiver not to have played the past two seasons, but it can happen at BYU, where many athletes serve two-year church missions. So the Cougars welcome back Austin Collie, who caught 53 passes for 771 yards and 8 TDs as a Freshman in 2004."

I hope that Collie has an even better year in 07 than in 04. If he does, he'll no doubt start some games late in the season and next year.

My college football knowlage is still limited but I like the look of this team. Do they not get slated by the media for having such a white team? I'm guessing they must be one of the most intellegent college football teams out there!

I haven't recently heard BYU get slammed by the media for playing so many whites and I have been going there for 2 years, TheEnglishman. They are definitely one of the most poised teams out there, because the average age of the players is higher than most other schools. As far as team intelligence goes, yeah, probably one of the most, because they have so many whites, and because BYU is a very academically selective school. The enrollment has been capped for several years now so the student body will not grow anymore.

they lost the game, but what a game it was! and every play was made by a white guy except for the two catches by Watkins. i can't wait to see Austin Collie in action again.

Part of an interview with Freshman RB J.J. Di Luigi.

What was it like to win the California state title and defeat the No. 1 team in the nation?
That was amazing. It was the greatest feeling in the world and it just makes me want to push myself for more. Now that I am at the next level, I want an even bigger game than the one I have played in.

What do you say to people who comment on you size as a running back?
I say size doesn't matter. I say it's the size of the heart, not the size of the player.

What player would you say you are most like?
I've been said to play like LaDainian Tomlinson or like a Barry Sanders. Being able to stop on a dime and making cut backs and make defenders miss. So, I would say one of those guys.

it seems Kayle Buchanan is still holding on to the starting corner spot opposite Ben Criddle. i hope that continues, because how awesome would it be to see a team lime-up with two white corners?!?
smiley32.gif

speaking of Ben Criddle, here is a story that shows his tenacity and self-confidence... but it also includes the mandatory caste speak about white athletes, some of which even Criddle seems to believe about himself.

i have highlighted the troubling lines... i mean, why would the top corner in the Mountain West self-identify as a safety?

<DIV =timestamp>PROVO â€â€￾ During the week of the TCU game nearly two years ago, a walk-on named Ben Criddle entered BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall's office to discuss his status on the team.

"He told me it wasn't very probable that I'd get any playing time that season," Criddle recalled this week. "So I said, 'I'd like to redshirt because I'm going to start the next two years and be All- Mountain West Conference."'

It seemed like a brash, audacious statement from a non-scholarship player who failed to attract attention from any Division I schools after playing at Glendale Community College in Arizona.

Mendenhall remembers the conversation. What was his reaction to Criddle's bold declaration that he would be a two-year starter and an all-conference performer?

"I discounted it immediately," he recalled. "I don't remember what my response was, other than internally knowing that it would play out as it needed to."

As it played out, Criddle locked down the starting cornerback job the following spring, which he's held ever since. He was sidelined for the Las Vegas Bowl last December due to a foot injury and in January was awarded a scholarship. After sitting out of spring drills after undergoing surgery, Criddle says the foot is doing well.

While he's dealing with a swollen ankle, he says he'll be ready for the season-opener against Arizona on Sept. 1.

Remembering his conversation with Mendenhall, Criddle smiles, knowing he has unfinished business. "I still need to get All-Mountain West Conference for me to fulfill my promise to him, which I feel I can do this year."

After recording 53 tackles, two interceptions and nine pass break-ups, Criddle deserved consideration for All-MWC honors last season.

"You could make an argument with his statistics that he might have been considered," Mendenhall said. "He's one of the few players that has come into my office and made a statement like that, then actually backed it up."

From the outside, what Criddle has experienced the past year or so looks like a meteoric rise up the depth chart. But for the 6-foot, 185-pound senior, it's been a long road.

"I feel extremely blessed," he said. "I don't know how to describe it other than, it's living a dream. I really wanted to come here to BYU, walk on, and live a dream. I worked hard to get to this point, and I plan on continuing to work hard. I definitely feel blessed to get this far."

Two years ago, Criddle showed up to the walk-on tryouts on the first day of school. While he made the team, he was simply regarded as just another walk-on. "They allowed me to be part of the team," he said.

"I wore a white helmet with no 'Y' on it. I was a player on the scout team."

Criddle attributes much of his success to the offensive coaches who saw him in practice. Offensive coordinator Robert Anae, running-backs coach Lance Reynolds and former offensive line coach Jeff Grimes repeatedly told Mendenhall that Criddle was a playmaker.

"From the minute school started, he demonstrated against our offense on the scout team that he was a competitor," Mendenhall said. "It's not incredible athleticism, it's not fantastic ability â€â€￾ though he does have solid ability. He is passionate about football. He probably studies more game film than anyone in our secondary, along with (safety) Quinn Gooch. He loves the game, and he's been a joy to coach."

Criddle watches eight to 10 hours of film every week prior to a game. "If you're a student of the game, then you can anticipate things that are going to happen before they happen," he said. "It helps me prepare. I don't run a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash. I'm actually a safety playing corner. I need all the help I can get. If I can have a mental edge on somebody, I have to use my intellect to be better than someone else. Watching film helps me do that."

Even with a scholarship and a starting role, Criddle is not satisfied. He has his sights on becoming an All-MWC cornerback. "I've always had a chip on my shoulder," he said. "I have to prove myself every single day, every single week. I want to be the best, and I'm driven to that goal."

so far this fall, it looks like Ben Criddle and Kayle Buchanan are holding onto their starting spots at corner.

Buchanan, whose talent has never been the question mark but has been injury-prone, is the healthiest he's been in two years, and is having the best camp he's had as a Cougar.

safety Dusti Gabriel is out for the year due to foot surgery, and the starting safety spotalongside Quinn Gooch is still up in the air.

receiver Austin Collie has been looking good in camp, as has true freshman tailback J.J. DiLuigi.

another young receiver has entered the mix. red-shirt freshman Tyler Kozlowski has taken advantage of injuries to upper classmen.

You always hear about thoses "missions" that guys at BYU take, always making them older prospect, I'd like to know are those mandatory, or it something that you just have to do to get your degree if you go at BYU ?

Gi-15, A male mormon BYU student doesn't have to go on a mission, but it is highly encouraged for guys to go on them when they are around 19. BYU has non-mormon students, so of course it is not a requirement for graduation. Missions for mormon males used to be less common, but in many respects is more of a status issue now, because you are seen as having succeeded if you can pay for all your sons to go on missions. That was totally different 50 years ago. There are still plenty of young men who go on missions out of a sense of religious duty and devotion though.
