BYU wins in a huge upset at Texas Christian University! What a win for BYU and against the Caste System. That ended the nations longest winning streak. Zac Collie had 2 catches for 44 yards. Matt Allen had 2 for 42 and a nice TD, McKay Jacobson had 3 for 37, plus 2 kick returns for 44 yards, and Jonny Harline had 3 for 34 and a TD. RB Joe Semanoff had a 6 yard kick return. LB Cameron Jensen had a great pickoff. Nathan Meikle had 3 punt returns for 13 yards. QB John Beck went 23 for 37 for 323 yards and 3 TDs. Punter Derek McLaughlin averaged a good 42.8 yards on 5 punts. Great game Cougars! Now, lets get the MWC Championship!

TCU coach cites lack of white players for struggles

FORT WORTH, Tex. -- TCU coach Gary Patterson, expressing frustration Thursday with the No. 17 Horned Frogs' loss to unranked BYU, attributed the defeat in part to the Cougars having more white players who "are very, very smart."

Patterson, in his 6th year at Texas Christian University, first mentioned the school's lack of white players compared to other Mountain West Conference programs while talking to reporters Thursday.

He said TCU needed to recruit smarter players. "We were looking at things, like you don't see many white athletes in our program," Patterson told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

When questioned about the remarks during his weekly luncheon Friday, the coach didn't hesitate to elaborate.

"It just seems to be that way, that white kids are very, very smart. That doesn't mean that Afro-American kids and other descents aren't smart, but it's very obvious to me that whites are especially smart," Patterson said.

Won on the road too! Good deal. Sad when even TCU is a pure caste team. Thank God BYU went back to their traditional uniforms. I HATED that experiment a couple years back. Now if only the Patriots would go back to the Minuteman hiking the ball...

I like BYU but I think Air Force and Wyoming have more White players.I'd like to see all 3 teams do well this season.

Those teams do have as many or more whites than do BYU. When I listed a few of the western teams, I also included a few pacific islanders who aren't at the skill positions. BYU has 3 starting this year, so in reality they have 16 white starters or 19 non-black starters. Air Force is the whitest team because they don't have pacific islanders starting this year. Wyoming is just behind them, along with BYU and a couple other teams. It is really something how the Utah sports guys keep talking about how CSU stinks because they don't have Kyle Bell. The big game for BYU before the annual game with Utah will be the Air Force game, which will be played at Colorado Springs. I will root for Air Force over BYU this year, as long as Air Force goes on and wins the MWC title. I also have another reason to root for them, but I'll keep that to myself.

Colonel, you didn't answer my question about Kayle Buchanan... is he getting any PT?

wouldn't it be awesome if BYU started both him and Criddle? what would the jock sniffers have to say about that... especially if they kept winning!

Jimmy, Kayle has played a very small amount in 3 games, but has only registered one tackle. He is listed behind Ben Criddle at the Right Corner position.

BYU crushed UNLV 52-7 behind 1 rushing and 4 passing TDs by John Beck, 2 to McKay Jacobson and 2 to Jonny Harline. 2nd (H)WR and 3rd TB Mike Hague (a freshman) ran for 123 yards and a TD on 9 carries as the second RB for BYU Saturday. 2nd FB Joe Semanoff ran 4 times for 21 yards. I hope to see a lot more out of these guys in the next couple of years.

The bad news for the future of Mike Hague, Joe Semanoff, and Isaac Taylor is that they will have to compete with Manase Tonga, Wayne Latu, Isaac Taylor, and Ray Hudson, Harvey Unga, and Fui Vakapuna (already a fan favorite) for the carries. The good news is that they have plenty of time left to do it.

i was flipping through the channels late last night on the DirecTV, and i stumbled across the BYU-UNLV game.

i have to say, the youngsters for BYU looked awesome! Hague's 87-yard touchdown run showed power, determination, and speed! it came on a simple dive play where he hit it up the middle. the defense clogged up the line, with a couple of d-linemen getting their hands on Hague. he kept his feet moving and spun out of the pile, coming around the left end. when he got to the corner, he hit the gas and it was over! nobody from UNLV got close to him!

McKay Jacobson looked impressive at wideout, as well. he put a move on the corner for his first TD catch that was so good, the DB fell down!
smiley32.gif
and on his second catch, he out-jumped the corner to grab an underthown ball in the endzone. he has tremendous potential.

on the defensive side of the ball, Ben Criddle showed shut-down coverage skills at corner, as well as showcasing his ball skills when the pass is in the air. early in the second quarter, he broke on a comeback route that looked to be a sure completion, but his closing speed got him to the receiver as the ball arrived and he broke up the pass. later in the first half, he intercepted a pass in the end zone. great game for Ben!

additional players who looked good in the secondary for BYU were safety Cole Miyahira (who showed tremendous speed catching a UNLV receiver from behind on what looked to be a sure TD and also had an interception), back-up corner Kayle Buchanan (he looked very impressive in the second half as BYU played its reserves), and back-up safety Corby Hodgkiss (who showed an aggressive nose for the ball).

all in all, a dominant performance by BYU. as an aside, why isn't QB John Beck getting more national pub? that guy is pretty darn good.

for UNLV, their two young receivers (sophomore Casey Flair and true freshman Ryan Wolfe) showed flashes of greatness mixed in with the expected inconsistency. Flair had 4 catches for 41 yards and a TD. while Wolfe, who was coming off a 9-catch, 176-yard, 2-TD night, had 4 for 97. safety Jay Staggs had 7 tackles.

all in all, BYU freshmen had a HUGE day for the Cougars...

Yes, we do have some promising youngsters, and I can't wait to see what kind of players they turn into. Remember though, that these guys will probably be gone next year on missions, but hopefully get back and be ready to go.

I'll call this post John Beck's Facemask Follies.
smiley36.gif

I was looking at some pics of him earlier today and noticed that he has worn a different style facemask every year he has started as QB at BYU. I don't know if this is superstition or just a change in preference. Anyway, you don't see college QBs change facemasks often, let alone every year. I know Archie Manning had 3 different ones at Ole Miss the 3 years he started and wore a different one every year he played in the NFL which must be some kind of record as far as switching facemasks go. One thing is for sure, he's a great QB that I hope gets a shot with an NFL team. Anyway, here is Beck's progression.

BYU beat Air Force in a battle between the whitest I-A teams in the country.

Johnny Harline was the game's leading receiver with 4 for 68 and a score. John Beck threw to 11 different receivers. I was hoping Freshman McKay Jacobson would catch that TD pass, but there's always next week. Beck was 23 for 31 for 258 and 3TDs. Joe Semanoff had 1-8 yard run and 1-9 yard catch. Zac Collie had 2 catches for 26 yards, and Nathan Meikle had a 16 yard catch. Bryce Mahuika had a 14 yard catch and Matt Allen had a 13 yard catch.

Air Force QB Shaun Carney ran 10 times for 50 yards and a score. Chad Hall had 6 runs for 13 yards and Beau Suder had 3 runs for 6 and a TD plus a 7 yard catch.

McKay Jacobson led all receivers in the game with 3 receptions for 106 yards, while Jonny Harline had 6 grabs for 60, Zac Collie had 2 for 36, and Matt Allen 3 for 31.

Something I have noticed is that CSU's WR Dustin Osborn has been under-utilized this year. He only had 1-5 yard catch today.

Last night BYU demolished Wyoming 55-7, clinching at least a share of the MWC conference title. A win next week against New Mexico will give the outright title to BYU. Except for 1 lapse late in the 4th quarter, BYU's defense played like professionals. CB Ben Criddle intercepted a pass to end the first half, and FS Quinn Gooch intercepted a pass to start the second half. My favorite player, former walk-on Nathan Meikle was 2 yards away from a game opening TD kickoff return. He ended the game with 2 catches for 30 yards, the 84 yard KO return, and 3 punt returns for 31 yards. TE Jonny Harline led all receivers in the game with 6 catches for 104 yards and a TD. WR McKay Jacobson had a very athletic and alert 77 yard punt return for a TD, plus 3 catches for 26 yards. WR's Bryce Mahuika and Zac Collie had 1 catch each for 30 and 15 yards respectively.

On the running side of the ball, Mike Hague had 5 runs for 19 yards, and Jason Beck also had a 6 yard carry. Wyoming's SS John Wendling had a 16 yard carry from scrimmage.

BYU QB John Beck passed Jim McMahon in both career passing yardage and career total offense last night, going 20 for 26 for 313 yards, and 2 passing and rushing TDs. He picked apart one of the best pass defenses in the country, and BYU is 8-2 and really starting to look like a force to be reckoned with. They should win out and play in the Las Vegas Bowl against the number 4 Pac-10 team. I have been wondered what might have been for BYU had they not let the BC game slip out of their hands and also let Arizona beat them. I think as long as they win out with the conference title and win their bowl game, people will be satisfied.

wow! those are incredible numbers for Beck. Wyoming was ranked somewhere in the Top 5 in pass defense nationally. before this game, anyway. unreal!

that Wendling pic is something, too! he can really get off the ground.

BYU LB Cameron Jensen was MWC defensive player of the week last week, along with Wyoming's black RB Devin Moore and Texas Christian's kicker. This week, Jensen and the BYU defense shut Moore down. Only against a second team defense did Moore get lucky and break a long run. Jensen is called the general here in Utah and it is no wonder why. He is the leader of our vastly improved defensive unit.

John Beck was the MWC offensive player of the week for the 5th time this season. Freshman WR McKay Jacobson received his Mormon mission call last week. He will be serving in Japan for the next 2 years. I hope he comes back as good as he is now, but I hate to see him go.

i know its part of their mormon culture etc...

But being away on a 2 year mission certainly doesnt help the players football career....or the Football team itself.
