Black Punter in the NFL ? ?

I can't believe my eyes when I look to my favorite NFL teams "depth chart."
I know the season is a long time away. But come on. The Oakland Raiders had the best punter in the league for years in Shane Lechler. He split for free agency. (not to mention the great Ray Guy) So its kind of a tradition for the Raiders to have "top of the league" talent at the kicking and punting positions. Remember when Al Davis took kicker Janikowski with a very high draft pick. (I can't remember how high)
What is everybody's opinion ?

hey man.. welcome to the forum.
You talkin' about Marquette King (?), I haven't seen him kick yet (?)
Do u remember back in the day, the Dolphins had a Black punter (Reggie Roby). I don't think he was too bad; I remember homeboy was built like a linebacker.

I think the reason you don't see a lot of Black kickers is bcuz of the solo pressure put on that position. You only have 3 or 4 times a game to earn your paycheck.. Black guys (generally) don't seem to thrive in those circumstances. Same theory (I believe) applies to the QB position.. all the physical prowess in the world becomes faded in a continuously collapsing pocket, or regular last minute drive circumstances. White pocket passers keep winning Super Bowls, bcuz the position (like punting & kicking) requires unique will power & guts.. we'll see ~

Yes sir, it sounds like you are "on the money" with your analysis. I feel need to point out that I don't harbor any "racial superiority" crap. BUT this website has "opened my eyes" to a lot of bull**** that has been going on in American sports.

Reggie Roby for the Dolphins was actually pretty good. Have you ever wondered why the liberal sports media and DWF's have never clamored for more black kickers and punters? Its always the glamour positions they're after. That is why I despise ESPN and their black quarterback agenda.

The Vikings had a Nigerian place kicker, in the late '80s early '90s era, Donald Igwebuike, until his inner African took over and he was arrested for heroin smuggling. :afro:

Yes, both of you are correct. BUT We Are Talking about My ****ing RAIDERS !
(who, I feel the need to point out, 4 of the starting 5, "O-Linemen" are of European ancestry)
Oakland has that kicking, punting tradition. I guess when you suck like they have lately, you NEED A GOOD PUNTER ! he he he.

Welcome to the board, Vince_C! When I discovered CF a few years back, I was a dedicated Chiefs DWF, and certified Raider hater.
I've since largely gotten over my team fannery and now pretty much root for whatever team is going to give white players a shot, and exposure. Especially skill positions. If the former "hated" Raiduhs start playing whites at WR, RB, LB, and DL, I'll cheer on the Silver and Black as well!

Probably wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if there were some black kickers, punters and long snappers in the league.

Seems most here know by now that the NFL seems to have some weird thing going on in which 24 to 26% of draft picks have been white almost every year, since the latter 90's. At the same, for a couple decades, the overall number of whites on 53 men rosters has held steady at 30 to 32% overall in the league.

The difference of 6% from the draft to the final 53 rosters is probably due to the fact punters, kickers and snappers are rarely drafted. In total, PK's, P's and LS' comprise about 6% of NFL rosters -- so that's how your 24 to 26% whites drafted turns to 30 to 32% on Fall Sunday's.

Anyhow, if there seems to be some sort of "covert quota" of total whites held at 30 to 32% on final rosters, I'd much rather have some extra white RB's and DB's making up that total, instead of punters and snappers, ect.

I think Sports Historian might've put it best when the topic of black kickers came up: He reckoned a kicker can only "make a kick" or "miss kick". Ergo, NFL teams need to find the best available players, as kickers are critical...Teams can hide a crappy WR, RB or LB and still win games, not so much with kickers?

Raiders-Chiefs Rivalry is Legendary

One thing I have always looked for is a team with a IDENTITY. Something that separates them from the rest of the league. You definitely could recognize it in the 1970's early 80's.
The Cowboys, the Steelers, the Bears. These are not just teams. Each had its own way of approaching the game, right? Some organizations have more rings. But all these well known teams had a individual impression they gave the fans. (In my mind a liest) But I think you know what I'm talking about.
Now my Raiders (win or lose) always had that "Silver & Black" philosophy going on. I know a lot of people have always perceived Oakland's identity as a "thug" type of attitude. But I don't think that is correct. First of all, the whole NFL is guilty of promoting African-American players. Other teams have had way more players with actual criminal records.

I have always perceived the Raider mystique as a positive, "Me Against The World" mentality. Or to put it another way, "the underdog castaway" that rises up and conquers.
And That My Friend, Is What Our European Ancestry Is All About. Right?

myriad of reasons, one of the biggest is that even today many kickers start out early in soccer.

there is no soccer in the hood

I was a big Raider fan back in the day. They had plenty of White ass kickers, Howie Long, Ted Hendricks, Lyle Alzado, John Matuszak, and my favorite Bill Romanowski. They also had some great running backs, Marv Hubbard, Pete Banaszak. QB's Daryl Lamonica, Kenny Stabler, George Blanda. Pass cachers like Todd Christianson, Fred Biletnikoff. Those days are long gone now though. A few White lineman don't polish the turd that the team has become. Terelle Pryor for Qb anyone?

Let's not forget Mark Van Eeghen, I believe he had 3, 1,000 yd. seasons as a Raider RB!

Ironically, Hubbard and Van Eeghan played their college ball at Colgate.
