We've mentioned him before but for the benefit of our newbies......
Jacko Gill is at this stage of his life the best Shot Putter who has ever existed.
16 years old and holds all under 20 world records for 5kg, 6 kg and 7.26kg. He needed one lazy throw to go top qualifier at these Games yesterday

I haven't checked yet to see if Gemili (our brightest sprint hope) is running, but for me this race is all about Amy Weissenbach v. Jessica Judd. Weissenbach is the staggeringly great American 800 m runner who burst on the scene this year and who--oh, yeah--also scored over 2300 (out of 2400 for you foreigners unfamiliar with the exam) on her SATs. Jessica Judd is her British equal. I want to see these two sharing the podium with Laura Roesler at the Olympics someday. There is an 800 m renaissance on both the male and female sides.

both young Aussie sprinters qualified for the finals, each winning their heat. the times were much slower than the earlier round due to strong headwinds.

Hugh Donovan ran a heat-winning 10.83 (-2.0 wind), whilst Jarrod Geddes won his heat with a 10.76 (-2.0 wind). they are the only two White athletes to make the final in the men's 100 meters, but they both have a very good chance to medal.

on the girls' side, three White women made the 100-meter final: Galina Nikolova (11.83) from Bulgaria, Annika Drazek (12.05) from Germany, and Kamila Ciba (12.05) from Poland. Nikolova is likely the only threat to medal, however.Edited by: Jimmy Chitwood

Donovan (10.62) and Geddes (10.63) took fifth and sixth place, respectively.

for what it's worth, the lone Japanese runner took second with a 10.52, missing out on first place by a mere .01. judging by the tight-knit results (1st thru 8th were separated by a mere .18 seconds), it was an excellent race. it will be nice to eventually see the video.

on the girls side of the 100-meters, Nikolovafinished 4th while Drazek and Ciba were well back in seenth and eighth.

in the girls' 100-meter hurdles, Noemi Zbaren of Switzerland took second place with a sparkling 13.17.

Jacko just won by 4 metres.First youth over 24 metres with a 5 kg shot.
He's now 1.88 and 94 kgs (207 lbs) and not an ounce of excess. Iwonder what the future holds for this 16 year old.

I just dug up this info from 3 months back. He'll be a big help to his mum when he grows up LOL. These results explain his explosive power bursts in the shot.

Oh, he has a second string event too...just on 60 metres with the 1.5kg discus

"Didier Poppe who is a coach of New-Zealand´s shot put sensation Jacko Gill carried on a physical tests for his athletes to see their general physical form at that period of training. Gill had a 3 meter standing long jump, in which his lifetime best jump is 3.30 m, an outstanding 95 cm in standing vertical jump and a box jump on 1.5 m. He also ran 3.5 s (hand-timing) in 30 m. Most of the throwers are curious about his weight records so Throwholics is now honored to inform you with his best results. 8 reps at 140 kg (300 lbs)"Edited by: mastermulti

damn. i just did the math on that vertical jump of Jacko's (1cm = 0.3937 inches), and he's got a 37.4-inch vertical! very impressive.

for those who are math challenged, this non-"afflete" can easily leap high enough to dunk a basketball.

If you know anything about throwers before they bulk up, many of them could be high school level sprinters. I have seen some crazy times for guys of their builds ie low 11 second 100 meter dash times. They have to be able to generate tremendous powar in the oval to throw at world class distance. The morbidly obese guy who can't run can only advance so far in the throws....

He looks like he could be a sprinter. Or a decathlete. He's even a bit long-legged. And not so large that he couldn't learn to pole vault.
That's close to an 11' broad jump.

too right W/L. Our best Masters Shot Putter over here is 48 years old and has done over 18 metres last season. He was a low/mid 11 second sprinter at high school before bulking up. And I guess they need that speed in the circleEdited by: mastermulti

yep, 11' is a pretty decent standing jump, especially for a 16 year old. Here's a fitness/power test sometimes used.

scoring: The measurement is taken from take-off line to the nearest point of contact on the landing (back of the heels). Record the longest distance jumped, the best of three attempts. The table below gives a rating scale for the standing long jump test for adults, based on personal experiences. See some athlete results for the long jump test. You can also use this calculator to convert cm to feet and inches.
males
