2010-2011 Bowl Matchups

Yeah, those sideline "reporters" are pretty much worthless. They are essentially hires to help the networks reach their AA quotas for women. I pretty much expected Mich St to get beat, but thought it'd be much closer. Northwestern came on strong at the end and took it down to the wire, losing 38 - 45. I didn't care for Rodriquez either becoming head coach at Michigan, but it was better than Les Miles. Now Penn St throws for it on 3rd and about a foot and an INT by McGloin . Stupid call.

ESPN Sucks And Other Lessons From The Holiday Bowl</font>

can't be said enough and it bears repeating over and over again. ESPN's
coverage of the Holiday Bowl sucked root. It was one of the worst
examples of sports broadcasting that's been seen in half a decade, and
I'm a regular viewer of Fox Sports Northwest.

If you had the misfortune of tuning into ESPN at 7 p.m. to watch the
game then you know what happened. Rather than allowing West Coast
viewers to cut away to a game that has local relevance, we were treated
instead to an extra half-hour of the Music City/Elvis Velvet Painting
Bowl.




Although it was mildly entertaining to watch the Derek Tooley-led
Tennessee Volunteers completely implode as the clock ticked down, there
was no reason why it should have preempted a full half-quarter of the
Holiday Bowl, making us miss a forced fumble/recovery by Huskies
linebacker Victor Aiyewa which resulted in a Chris Polk touchdown.




Viewers were helpfully informed to switchover to ESPN3, ESPNU or
ESPN8 "The Ocho" or whatever, completely screwing over basic cable
subscribers and forcing others to thumb through six hundred channels
looking for a station that normally airs the Afghanistan Buzkashi League
on tape delay. You can still hear the collective screams of thousands
of Dawg fans on cyberspace as they updated their Facebook accounts to
vent their rage over their inability to watch.




The worse was yet to come when a couple minutes later the game was
preempted again to show garbage time in a blowout loss by the University
of Connecticut Huskies women's basketball team. Outside of Connecticut,
nobody gives a damn about UConn basketball. Particularly a regular
season non-conference game against Stanford which was essentially
meaningless. (And the fact that it was already being shown on ESPN2)





Don't get me wrong. We in Seattle love our women basketball players
and it's pretty neat that the Storm have already won two WNBA
championships. Personally I've done more than my fair share of covering
women's athletics and I appreciate the amount of teamwork displayed.




But UConn's 90-game win streak being snapped doesn't warrant OJ
Simpson white Ford Bronco-style breaking coverage on every single ESPN
station. Not when the game had devolved to desperation fouls, cut-aways
to Condoleeza Rice and free-throw shooters who missed half their shots.
And not when Sportscenter is going to be running non-stop
UConn's-Streak-Is-Broken stories for the next the next 24-hours. Just
like it's been doing for the past two weeks.




None of this comes as a surprise, since the quality of ESPN has
deteriorated markedly over the past several years and now basically
fills its air time by gangbanging tabloid stories about Tiger Woods,
Lebron James, Michael Vick and Alex Rodgriguez to death.

The game ends with a McGloin pick 6. Without question McLovin just gave one of the worst QB performances I've ever seen... . . . ..

Wow, this has been a horrible day for the Big 10, and a great one for the SEC. More days like this, and we could be in store for months and months of SEC adulation.

the two offensive lines in the TCU-Wisconsin game are regarded as very good. i wonder how that is possible, considering how there's only1 affleteamong the 10 starting o-linemen.

Wisconsin's snow plow is likely the best in the entire country. which brings me to a related thought ...

i wonder what kind of numbers SMU tailback Zach Line could put up running in the Badgers' system. Line, who played high school ball in Michigan, was completely ignored by the Wisconsin coaching staff, however. that seems odd, though, considering Line is exactly the type of back the Badgers typically covet: a big, one-cut, north-and-south power back who can also pick up the blitz. Line doesn't have elite speed, yet neither do most of the tailbacks that Wisconsin recruits (in fact, Clay is the only back with sprinter speed that i can remember them using), so that isn't the reason. and considering that Line has put up similar/superior numbers to the Badgers' backs running behind a MUCH less talented offensive line and without a fullback, one must suspect that it wasn't his lack of ability that was the reason for his shunning.

so, what is different about LinethanClay, James White, Montee Ball, John Clay, Zach Brown, PJ Hill, Ron Dayne, etc.? hmmm ...

i wonder if Wisconsin freshman tailback Kyle Zuleger has the same problem Line has, because despite being MUCH faster than the tailbacks ahead of him on the depth chart (even Clay) he has only 7 carries on the year ... and was a walk-on.

here's a good profile on Zach Line that talks about how he ended up at SMU. a poignant excerpt:

Line thought he'd run around the Michigan State Spartans'backfield, attending his father's alma mater and playing for the school he'd cheered for as a kid. But Michigan State, like the rest of the Football Bowl Subdivision schools, didn't offer Line a scholarship.

TCU's linebackers, Brock and Carder, were a BIG, HUGEpart of the Horned Frogs win today. They were everywhere, in on virtually every play. I wonder why more schools don't recruit more guys like them.....

Congrats to Andy Dalton and the great White athletes of Texas Christian on winning the Rose Bowl as a non-BCS school!

Carder was a difference maker. Agressive and athletic he can run sideline to sideline. No bullsh*t he reminded me of Urlacher...Edited by: celticdb15

TCU's linebackers (Tank Carder and Tanner Brock) and safety (Colin Jones) made plays all over the field. and especially gratifying is that even castephile Kirk Herbstreit was forced to comment on how fast and talented they are. now THAT, my friends, is a great way to start off the new year.

and i still stand by my comments on the Wisconsin running game on the bottom of the previous page ...

I'd love to know Nick Williams's 40 time. Each time he has run the ball back, he looked like vapor. I bet he's 4.42 or better. It's a shame Edsall doesn't let him contribute on offense. He has 2 kick returns for touchdowns this year. I bet he'd outplay the somewhat overhyped Todman.

you beat me to it, Riddlewire. i'd never even heard of this kid before tonight. talk about flying under the radar! 'cause he can really fly.

he'd lead the nation in kick returns if he had enough returns to qualify. just think ... 2 touchdowns on only 11 kick return attempts. wow! and he averages over 42 yards-per-return.it's "weird" that this explosive playmaker can't get on the field at his listed position of wide receiver.

of course, Robbie Frey can't get on the field either ... and his averages at tailback are superior to starting tailback Jordan Todman's. and considering that Todman is supposed to be one of THE best tailbacks in the nation, what does that say about Frey?

you have to wonder why the two incredibly explosive White athletes don't see more involvement in the offense. perhaps (and i say that in an attempt to give the coaching staff some credit) Williams struggles catching the ball, but what then is the excuse for Frey? he's clearly shown his ability to make plays at tailback, yet he might as well be invisible when the offense trots onto the field.

and it turns out that White people raised Jordan Todman. wow.

I might want a loss for Edsall, but what is the deal with these ESPN clowns picking on UConn's receivers? At least FIVE times during this game, they have disparaged UConn's receiving corps as a group. I've never heard anything like it.

Penn State was nothing less than a "patchwork" team. On ESPNs "Bowl Preview Special" (admittedly a Caste program which said that Notre Dame couldn't compete with Thug U..oops!)

..nonetheless they picked Florida over Penn State, and I couldn't really disagree with them. Somebody was going to win this rather-dull Bowl match-up, and I figured it would be Florida. Like has been said already, Paterno is a shell of his former self.

I don't think anyone on CF is crying for Denard and Rich Rod..

As for Michigan State, they could have played better, yeah, but they were facing an ANGRY Alabama that was still ticked about their Iron Bowl loss. Good to see Greg McElroy back after he got concussed against Auburn.. I felt really bad for him in that Auburn game. When he was taken off the field after being concussed, Alabama fans' showed their appreciation for him - so not everyone's a self-loathing DWF. Many people were upset about that loss, of course, but what CAN'T be questioned is McElroy's hunger. So, now, our warrior goes out on top, with a National Championship already under his belt as well.

Alabama also has huge linebackers, likely the biggest in the country.. they were the difference-makers. I honestly think a sumo -- like Marcel Dareus -- won't be able to stay healthy in the NFL. Who gets hyped-up on Michigan State? Pretty much bruthas like Greg Jones and Jerel Worthy (both have some ability of course), a few wideouts and their huge stable of running bLacks.

I like some of the things that their head coach has done, and I've mentioned that on previous occasions, but they just ran into a buzz saw today.

Unless Ohio State pulls off a miracle and avoids thier annual bowl game fold up the Big 10 will be made out to be a laughingstock. The announcers were all over it today. SEC fast, Big 10 slow, because the Big 10 has a few more white players, mostly in the non-speed positions, but none-the-less for the talking heads white skin is a disadvantage and they love it when a series of games gives that impression.

Penn State was hurt, Northwestern had some major injuries, Michigan State was clearly a phony champion (how the hell do you go 11-1 in a major conference and then get ass kicked like that?) Michigan did'nt deserve a New Years Day bowl, hell they didn't deserve one at all. Wisconsin played well but came up just short.

It's the same thing, bowl games are played in the south, its a big travel for the northern teams and there fans are outnumbered two to one so it's like a road game. Non deserving teams often get invited to bowls over there heads (Michigan) because they travel well.

None of it makes a difference to the caste clowns and this will mean another year of fans insisting that Big Ten teams recruit blacks from the deep south.

This UConn team has some phenomenal white athletes on it.
Such a shame they're almost all playing the wrong positions.
