The lack of star white receivers in the NFL is discouraging. In the past we have had guys like Mccaffrey and Chrebet. Kevin Curtis is going through injuries and isn't able to be a star at this point. Walter can be a star but isn't yet. Jordy Nelson and Austin Collie can also be in the future. I sure hope Jordan Shipley and Eric Decker change things for the better.

The Horns need to up the passes thrown to Shipley this season. The guy is too good a WR to only have 2 TDs...should be at 4-5.

I agree. Other teams' secondaries are giving him much attention: overs and unders, jamming, etc. so Texas his largely throwing to him short. Defenses just can't keep him down, not in the day of the spread.

Another solid game for Jordan Shipley

Another solid game for Jordan Shipley

By Alan Trubow
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
Sunday, September 27, 2009

About halfway through last season, Texas receiver Jordan Shipley had to add a piece of equipment to his uniform.

He started wearing a back flap.

He had to.

Shipley was finding a way to get open on short routes time and again. The immediate result: a reception.

And after that, a hard shot to Shipley's back by a defender.

"That's probably where I'm most sore when I wake up Sundays," Shipley said.

That could happen when he gets up today. The sixth-year senior hauled in 10 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown Saturday during the Longhorns' 64-7 victory over UTEP.

It was just another day for Shipley: It wasn't flashy. No single play stood out.

He just produced, again.

"I don't think there's any question Jordan Shipley is underrated," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "He's the same guy every day, has the same attitude every day. I don't think he's appreciated enough outside of our staff and team."

Through four games, Shipley is putting up All-America numbers. He has 36 receptions for 436 yards and two touchdowns.

And that's just as a receiver.

The Longhorns' punt returner also has 177 return yards and a touchdown.

"He can do everything," Texas quarterback Colt McCoy said.

Most of Shipley's receptions, including those against UTEP, go for between 5-15 yards, and there's a reason.

"A lot of receivers have tendencies when they release, but Jordan doesn't have any," Texas safety Blake Gideon said. "You don't think he can run certain routes based on the way he's running, and then he just does it. It's impossible to cover him. He just gets open because he's got such great footwork and agility."

On Texas' longest drive of the year, a 15-play, 88-yarder in the second quarter, Shipley was the biggest factor.

With the Longhorns backed up to their own 7 after a penalty, Shipley caught a 23-yard pass to give Texas room and get out of a third-and-long situation.

On the next play, he hauled in a 19-yard reception on the left flat.

His next reception was on third-and 10, and the 9-yard connection from McCoy allowed the Longhorns to go for it on fourth down.

They converted.

Five plays later, Shipley caught a 16-yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone.

He took a shot to his back when he was trying to reach into the end zone.

But that wasn't the biggest hit Shipley had to take against the Miners. That came on a punt return.

Shipley did not signal a fair catch, and UTEP's Melvin Stephenson made him pay, drilling him right as he caught the ball. Stephenson was penalized for not giving Shipley room to catch the ball.

Still, the Texas receiver bounced right back up.

"It's my fault," Shipley said. "I don't like calling for the fair catch and sometimes I should. If you're not going to call for the fair catch, you need to take the hit and get back up."

That's just Shipley being Shipley.

Every day. Every play.

Vote in this ESPN poll for Jordan Shipley for the Biletnikoff Award! He's already in the lead, but lets help make sure he stays there.

Jordan is currently 6th in receiving yardage in the FBS with 1,292 yards and 11 TDs on 99 receptions. Hopefully he'll have a great game against Nebraska this Saturday.

So both the Doak award and Biletnikoff award winners should be white, yet there are so few white WRs in the NFL and virtually ZERO white RBs..hmmmmm. Whites are amongst the VERY BEST in college when they get the chance, yet can't be numerous, but the NFL will completely snub them.

its a shame that he didn't win. I guess they couldn't have two White players winning awards for skill positions in the same year.

At least a majority of people in 49 states thought Shipley should win it, only Indiana had more votes for Tate, and even they had 30 percent of the votes going to Shipley.Edited by: dwid

Man, I feel like Jordan got robbed but Tate had excellent numbers as well so I won't complain too much. Also, with Toby winning the Doak Walker Award I am in really good spirits right now!

Fortunately, and unfortunately, many of these awards are based on final impressions. Fortunately for Toby Gerhart, in addition to playing well all year long, he finished especially strong in his final games, and especially the Notre Dame game. Unfortunately for Jordan Shipley, his last game against Nebraska was underwhelming, though not his fault, while Golden Tate had an amazing game against Stanford. If looked at for the entire year, Shipley had a superior season, but it's the final impression that seems to matter most.

I'm calling on our Draftdaddy buddy that must frequent this site to set the record strait. An article posted on your site talks about likely NFL prospects playing in the championship game tomorrow. As per usual, some very caste material has been spewed by some Drunk White Sports Writer about our boy Shipley. I'm sure this garbage has been noticed by you and will probably be pointed out soon on your informative site questioning the articles merit. I know you have to be careful for fear of backlash by the media race baiters but you always present the facts in an intelligent and tactful manner. Here it is for those who haven't had the misfortune to read it so far. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/football/nfl/01/06/titlegame/

No foot speed? Ha, Ha. And the dumbarse projects him to be a 2nd rounder, yet only a 3rd reciever on any given team. Why would any team draft someone in the 2nd that can only be a 3rd reciever? At least it wasn't a big magazine with a good reputation for accuracy.

I hope Jordan lights up Bama tonight for 150-200 yards & 2-3 TDs. This BS of him not being a 1st round NFL pick is (again) further proof of the ever-present caste system.

If he runs in the 4.4 range which he should there is no reason he shouldn't be a first round pick. As far as idiots saying he's a third receiver that is bs. He could be a number 1.

Didn't appreciate the back handed compliment of Brent Musburger saying that Shipley would be a successful "slot WR" in the NFL. Jordan Shipley is a deep threat with track speed and who could do more than be somebody's possession WR. He also compared him to Wes Welker which is a compliment but a limiting one in the sense he can't be a #1 playmaking threat such as Moss, Wayne, Desean Jackson, Miles Austin, etc...

guest301 you're absolutely right in your comments about Shipley and I heard the comment by Musberger as he spoke it and had the same immediate reaction as you did. These frickin announcers need to grow some kahones and give white players the same type of recognition that they automaticallygive black athletes.

I heard that remark too. Of all the NFL receivers he could have been compared to it had to be Wes Welker! Just ridiculous.

Jordan Shipley is ranked as Footballs(black)future's 8th best WR. Shipley is the only white man included, on the top 10 WR list, in this year of great white WRs...What a joke!
