BOAO, China - Action star Jackie Chan said Saturday he's not sure if a free society is a good thing for China and that he's starting to think "we Chinese need to be controlled."

Chan's comments drew applause from a predominantly Chinese audience of business leaders in China's southern island province of Hainan.

The 55-year-old Hong Kong actor was participating in a panel at the annual Boao Forum when he was asked to discuss censorship and restrictions on filmmakers in China. He expanded his comments to include society.

"I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not," Chan said. "I'm really confused now. If you're too free, you're like the way Hong Kong is now. It's very chaotic. Taiwan is also chaotic."

Chan added: "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."

The kung fu star has not been a vocal supporter of the pro-democracy movement in his hometown of Hong Kong. Since the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997, voters have not been allowed to directly elect their leader. Several massive street protests have been held to demand full democracy, but Beijing has repeatedly said Hong Kong isn't ready for it.

The theme at Saturday's panel discussion was "Tapping into Asia's Creative Industry Potential," and Chan had several opinions about innovation in China.

He said that early in his career, he lived in the shadow of the late martial arts star Bruce Lee. He said that during his first foray into Hollywood, he struggled to establish his own identity, so he returned to Hong Kong. After spending 15 years building his reputation in Asia, Chan finally got rediscovered by Hollywood, he said.

Chan said the problem with Chinese youth is that "they like other people's things. They don't like their own things." Young people need to spend more time developing their own style, he added.

The action hero complained that Chinese goods still have too many quality problems. He became emotional when discussing contaminated milk powder that sickened tens of thousands of Chinese babies in the past year.

Speaking fast with his voice rising, Chan said, "If I need to buy a TV, I'll definitely buy a Japanese TV. A Chinese TV might explode."

He is right the Chinese do need to be controlled. Democracy only works in an educated, white Christian nation.

And this prompted a BACKLASH.
To be honest, the dude doesn't know squat what he's getting at, he never finished any kind of formal education.

HONG KONG - Action star Jackie Chan's comments wondering whether Chinese people "need to be controlled" have drawn sharp rebuke in his native Hong Kong and in Taiwan.

Chan told a business forum in the southern Chinese province of Hainan that a free society may not be beneficial for China's authoritarian mainland.

"I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not," Chan said Saturday. "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."

He went on to say that freedoms in Hong Kong and Taiwan made those societies "chaotic."

Chan's comments drew applause from a predominantly Chinese audience of business leaders, but did not sit well with lawmakers in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

"He's insulted the Chinese people. Chinese people aren't pets," Hong Kong pro-democracy legislator Leung Kwok-hung told The Associated Press. "Chinese society needs a democratic system to protect human rights and rule of law."

Another lawmaker, Albert Ho, called the comments "racist," adding: "People around the world are running their own countries. Why can't Chinese do the same?"

Former British colony Hong Kong enjoys Western-style civil liberties and some democratic elections under Chinese rule. Half of its 60-member legislature is elected, with the other half picked by special interest groups. But Hong Kong's leader is chosen by a panel stacked with Beijing loyalists.

In democratically self-ruled Taiwan, which split from mainland China during a civil war in 1949, legislator Huang Wei-che said Chan himself "has enjoyed freedom and democracy and has reaped the economic benefits of capitalism. But he has yet to grasp the true meaning of freedom and democracy."

Chan's comments were reported by news outlets in Hong Kong and Taiwan, but were ignored by the mainland Chinese press.

Although Chan was a fierce critic of the brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in June 1989, which killed at least hundreds, he has not publicly criticized China's government in recent years and is immensely popular on the mainland.

He performed during the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics and took part in the Olympic torch relay.

Chan also is vice chairman of the China Film Association, a key industry group.

Chan better watch out. The Chinese leadership is not amused by criticism. I'm sure they have an opening for him in the Gulag out somewhere in the Gobi Desert where he can think over his ill advised remarks for the next 40-50 yrs or so.

I think he's right. All non-white people need a high level of social control. It's the reason why some asian societies are productive---rigid social control. Only white people, that's ONLY white people, have been able to create free and peaceful societies. The ideas for this were laid down by generations of our finest minds. And were only made workable by our development of Christian values. Minus Christian values and with significant non-whites living amongst us our society will devolve into the chaos of those other places.

No, Asians are generally well behaved in this country. They are also generally liberal, despite having the economic and social mores associated with conservatism. Those I've known who are Republicans have expressed the idea that Democrats are not sufficiently interested in controlling personal conduct.

Asians are not so much incapable of behaving properly in a free society as they are afraid of freedom, and unable to see it as an end unto itself. Chan's comments are typical.Edited by: White_Savage

Don't confuse good behavior with the ability to create a free society. Bee's have a very productive social system---not a free one. Asian prosperity is due to their penchant for parroting succesful societies (like ours) and the fact that after WWII Macarther instilled a rigid form of "free government" in Japan that was carefully monitored and controlled. As the japanese have has so much success, the other asian peoples have mimicked them to varying degrees of prosperity. Also as long as white people kept the hammer on them they did well (Hong Kong), let's see what the future brings.

I'm not a fan of Asians. Nor do I like it when whites praise Asians for being intelligent, well-behaved, etc., usually in the attempt to establish how non-racist the white speaker is.

America has fought five Asian wars; the Moro rebellion, the Boxer rebellion, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. There are few accounts of Asian civility and kindness from those who participated.

The most vicious war ever fought was the Tai'Ping rebellion, a civil war fought between the emperor and a man who thought he was a sibling of Jesus. 30 million, 40 million...no one knows how many died. Asians have little use for human life not their own.

The Chinese Triads were the first organized crime groups in the world. Their capacity for effective cruelty is unmatched. One happy example is the Chinese method of smuggling opium out of the Golden Triangle. A baby is purchased from a hill tribe family. Then killed, gutted and filled with contraband. Though dead a well-wrapped baby will retain a healthy glow and warmth for two to three hours, time enough to pass inspection by border officials.

Asians dislike wearing socks. Some brands of Asians will eat your household pet. There are rat restaurants in China. Chinese enjoy the fever eating rat induces.

Asians have compulsive tendencies. It is the rare Asian who isn't addicted to a vice such as gambling or some form of opiate.

Academics. A common trick for Asian students is to take a course for non-credit during the summer and then re-take the same course for credit. For virtually all their courses. On the taxpayer dime. And yes, they do pay ringers to take standardized tests.

Asians have two operating modes. Total obsequiousness and total arrogance. There is no middle ground. There used to be a breed of white man known as the 'Old China Hand'. They would view such concepts as 'Asian democracy' and 'fair trade' as thoughts of the insane.

When Jews and Arabs complain about Asian duplicity and sharp dealing, as they often do, it might be a good idea to pay attention.

Anything on two legs is better than blacks. But should that be the standard?

What about S. Korea? I may be wrong, but I thought that was a very open and free democracy.

Asians are losing some of their glow with me. Seems they just imitate, and they mainly build junk. A CD player that quit after about forty CDs. A bycycle tube with a bad valve stem. A can opener that stripped out after about fifty cans. A bike light that shuts off for no reason.
Just my own personal experience, along with all the killer dog food and baby food and other things that have been in the news.

Maybe that's why they're shipping all these third worlders in. They're more accustomed to such low standards.

I realize it may not have been the point of the post, and I've been criticized for my lack of knowledge in history in other posts, but I have to wonder how complaining about how Asians fought and treated enemy combatants in the Boxer Rebellion, the Moro rebellion, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and WWII means anything when outside of WWII (if that) we didn't really have a reason to be fighting them anyway.

the only war with an asian country that we should have been involved in is WW2, Korea and Vietnam came from anti-communist beliefs in our government and we should have let them work it out there selves.

Most all modern wars are initiated by the Globalist Elite...so that the Central Banking Cartel can fund both "sides". Most are also facilitated by false-flag ops via patsies (WWI, etc.). Have a read of USMC legendary Maj.General (& CMH winner) Smedley Butler's masterpiece "War is a Racket".
