CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Blood poured from his nose and onto his lip, chin and the court. The latest bruised face of college basketball's nastiest rivalry belongs to North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough.


Hansbrough had 26 points and 17 rebounds before suffering an injury that looked worse than it really was in the closing seconds of the No. 8 Tar Heels' 86-72 win over 14th-ranked Duke on Sunday, clinching the top seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.


But perhaps the lasting image of the intense rivalry is Hansbrough's bloodstained face, a scary-looking picture that evoked memories of center Eric Montross' bleeding, shaven head after he took an elbow in 1992. The latest injury came with 14.5 seconds left, when Hansbrough leaped for a layup. After the ball left his hand, he was struck in the face by Gerald Henderson's right elbow.


"He got our guys in the air, and I came down on him," Henderson said. "It's unfortunate that it turned out like it did, but I wasn't trying to hurt the kid or anything. It just turned worse than it was."


...Hansbrough crumpled to the ground, his nose bleeding onto the floor and down his face, before he jumped to his feet menacingly and had to be restrained from Duke's players while he was taken to the locker room. The officials reviewed the play and ejected Henderson, then later said in a joint statement that under NCAA rules he would be suspended for one game.

I'm surprised this racially charged incident hasn't garnered more attention on Caste Football. Has there ever been a black-white scuffle on court that wasn't started by the black player? I do remember when Larry Bird threw a punch at Dr. J some years ago, so assuming that there wasn't something "J" did to precipitate that, can anyone recall another like incident? I am so tired of watching video of the much larger white player lying crumpled on the floor, then rising up with a bloody face. How many times does this have to happen before some white players react by bloodying some black faces? This was an odd incident, in that Gerald Henderson is a black player on Duke's predominantly white team, and Hansborough is one of the few nationally known white basketball stars. I was shocked to hear Hansborough comment, a few days later, that there were no hard feelings between he and Henderson, and that he didn't believe the act was intentional. I don't know why this bothers me so much, but just once I'd like to see a black player crumpling, crying and beaten by some triumphant, confident white player. Then I'd like to see the black player humbly say that the act wasn't intentional and there were no hard feelings. Perhaps he could even proclaim how much he "respected" the white player who pummeled him. We can all dream....

The thread titled "Chimping Out" in the College Basketball forum is about this incident, but I know what you mean, B&R. I havewatchedwhat must behundreds of cases of violence in college and pro basketball games over the years, and most were a black being an aggressor against a white, who usually didn't fight back. Sometimes it's a black against another black, and rarely, two whites involved.


As I recall the Larry Bird-Julius Erving incident, Erving was the initiator and aggressor. Maybe someone else remembers it clearly and can fill in the details.


I can only think of one exception to the rule of black-initiated violence against whites, and it was a long time ago. A white NBA player with longish blonde hair went after a black player, throwing multiple punches at him as the black player back-pedaled and then ran off. That still sticks with me because it was such an extreme rarity.


Maybe the white dominance in boxing and some other factors will finally begin to change the dynamics of this situation. It's going to take whites getting fed up with the double standards and their second class status in sports and society at large, but that's easier said than doneunder a totalitarian systemwhich without fail stigmatizes and punishes whites who demonstrate, physically or mentally, any kind of racial consciousness or anger.

I remember in 1986 when Ray Knight cold-cocked Eric Davis and dropped him with one punch. Knight is an ex-boxer and had little trouble with the affalete Davis. His punch was short and straight, the complete opposite of what you see on the basketball courts when players start throwing these big looping punches that take forever to get there and have no weight behind them. Cincinnati kicked off the 1986 season April 7th with a 7-4 win over the Phillies. Despite the win, Cincinnati stumbled through the month of April and entered the month of May in the middle of a nine game losing streak. By the time the Reds snapped the losing streak (with a victory over the Braves), the Reds record was 6-16. The club was 8 games behind the division leading Astros. The Reds stayed seven to eigth games out of first place until July 8th. After a win over the Mets Cincinnati creeped within 6½ of the division leading Astros & Giants. The Reds manage to get within four games by July 19th. It would be the closest the Reds would get the rest of the season. The momentum seemed to have been lost after a bizarre 14 inning game on July 22nd in Cincinnati against the Mets.



Darryl Strawberry set the tone of the game, by being ejected after arguing a called 3rd strike in the 5th. In the 9th, Howard Johnson inadvertently kicks the ball after Reds catcher Bo Diaz drops a third strike. Johnson runs out of the baseline and is hit in the back with the throw from Reds pitcher Ron Robinson. Reds coach Billy DeMars is ejected for arguing the safe call. The Mets, down 3-1, with two out, tie the game when Dave Parker drops a routine fly ball. In the 10th, Mets manager Davey Johnson sends in pitcher Rick Aguilera to hit for pitcher Doug Sisk. Aguilera walks, but is stranded. In the Reds 10th, pinch-runner Eric Davis steals second & thrid and bumped into Mets third baseman (and former Red) Ray Knight. Knight punches Davis and both benches empty. After a 16 minute slugfest, Knight, Davis, Kevin Mitchell & Mario Soto were all ejected. Mets catcher Gary Carter moves to third base in place of Knight, McDowell comes in to pitch, and Orosco moves from the mound to right field. With two out and a runner on second in the 11th, Orosco returns to pitch and McDowell moves to left field, while Mets Mookie Wilson moves to right field. Rose protests to no prevail when Orosco is permitted eight warm-up pitches. Orosco goes on to strike out Reds batter Max Venable to end the inning. In the 12th, The Mets are forced to lead off the inning with Orosco and McDowell, and go down in order. McDowell returns to pitch in the 13th and gets Tony Perez to fly to Orosco in right. The madness finally is concluded when Howard Johnson hits a three-run homer in the 14th and McDowell retires the side in order.

I remember Ray Knight didn't take crap from anyone.


Another tough baseball player (and third baseman)was Graig Nettles. He was with the Yankees during the Reggie Jackson era in New York. At a party in the late '70s or early '80s, Jackson was being his usual obnoxious self and Nettles punched him in the face and knocked him out cold.


Nettles once said of Jackson: "The best thing about being a Yankee is getting to watch Reggie Jacksonplay every day. The worst thing about being a Yankee? Getting to watch Reggie Jackson play every day."

a consensus first-team All American pick, Tyler Hansbrough has vowed not to leave UNC without a national championship.

Over on ESPN.com's Andy Katz' blog, he reports that North Carolina All-American Tyler Hansbrough isn't leaving the school until he wins a national championship.

"That's a true statement," Hansbrough said of not leaving until he wins a title. "I don't really think I'd be satisfied without getting a title."

"It's a big part of everyone's goal on this team. Q [Quentin Thomas] is the only player on this team that went to a Final Four [in 2005] and played on a national championship team."

I watched him play in High School in Missouri and this kid was and is tenacious, that is how he got his nickname Psycho-T. When he sets his goals he will get them. Trust me. Also his brother Ben at Mississippi St. is not creampuff either.

The number #4 Ranked Tar Heels are playing really good this year and as usual it is mostly because of Tyler Hansborough. I would have to put him in a short list of players for the national college player of the year.

I can't wait to see him go up against Kyle Singler and Duke very soon. Tyler had a monster 360 degree slam dunk last night. Both of these kids can jump out of the gym but have the all round game to go with it.

Tyler was named the Sporting News National College Basketball Player of the Year. His number will be retired by North Carolina. That is quite an honor! Way to go Tyler Hansborough!

SAN ANTONIO (AP)â€â€￾Tyler Hansbrough, who topped the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring and rebounding and led North Carolina to the Final Four, was selected The Associated Press college basketball player of the year Friday.


The 6-foot-9 junior forward averaged 22.8 points, the highest mark by a North Carolina player since 1970, and 10.3 rebounds for the Tar Heels (36-2), who were ranked No. 1 for all but six weeks this season and were the overall top seed for the NCAA tournament.


Hansbrough was presented the award the day before the Tar Heels play Kansas in the second game of the Final Four.


He received 56 votes from the 72-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Freshman Michael Beasley of Kansas State had 15 votes and junior guard Chris Douglas-Roberts of Memphis got one in the voting conducted before the NCAA tournament. Hansbrough and Beasley both were unanimous selections as first-team All-Americans.

Defending National Player of the Year Tyler Hansbrough is out indefinitely with a stress reaction condition in his right leg. The Tar Heels forward was held out of practice on Thursday and an MRI revealed the condition.
"He'll be ok," Hansbrough's father, Gene, told ESPN.com's Andy Katz. "His leg's been bothering him for a couple of weeks. It's a stress reaction and he needs to rest a bit. He just needs time to let it heal. There is no reason for him to limp through it."

According to ESPN medical analyst Dr. Michael Kaplan, the MRI likely showed increased uptake in tibia (leg bone) suggesting a stress reaction. An overload or overuse type phenomenon occurs with inflammation and, ultimately, fatigue failure with stress fracture. This is a precursor condition to stress fracture. A period of rest is mandatory for tissues to quiet down or worsening injury will result.
There is no timetable for Hansbrough's return.

This is the second injury blow to the top ranked Heels. Senior swingman Marcus Ginyard will be out another five weeks after he had surgery to fix a stress fracture in his foot. The Tar Heels begin the regular season against Penn on November 15th.

Hansbrough's absence will mean Carolina will have to rely on junior Deon Thompson and freshman Ed Davis and Tyler Zeller to be the main options in the frontcourt.

Still not sold that he won't cut it in the NBA. Could see him as a David West or David Lee player. He has more going for him than the recent white flops like JJ and Morrison.

While watching the Pitt-Siena game on ESPN 2 , Tom Brennan , former coach of Vermont actually was honest about ridiculous NBA mock drafts where jock sniffers have Hansbrough as 19th. Brennan said "I don't believe there are 18 players better than Hansbrough". Brennan said Hansbrough should be a lottery pick. Play by play guys, IMHO are almost always morons. The pbp guy who was obviously no exception, ,said Hansbrough won't average double figures in the NBA.

Yeah, I heard that, but wasn't watching and when I thought about who said that, eliminated the former player and coach on the call, and figured it had to be the talking head.

Tyler Hansbrough has what it takes to be a force in the NBA. Of the white players I have seen play in college hoops in recent times, he plays with the greatest intensity on both ends of the court.

He attacks the basket with reckless abandon, defends anybody harder than you can ever expect him to. He plays the game at breaking point level. The problem I have seen why most college whites fail to adjust to the NBA is because of DEFENSE.

Many NBA coaches virtually stress defense to every player (especially whites) to breaking point level. Guys like Redick and Morrison can play defense, not exactly Defensive Player of the Year-level, but they can play defense.

But NBA coaches like Larry Brown and Van Gundy are expecting too from both Morrison and Redick to intensify their defense, to the point both players get injured.

I have witnessed the same thing in college hoops, too much defense. I have seen many promising white hoopsters sucumb to injury due to the defensive hysteria of these college coaches.

If Tyler Hansbrpugh is to suceed in the NBA, pray he goes to a team that doesn't expect too much of him on defense. He also needs to work on his outside game thats for sure.

Congrats to Tyler for breaking the all time UNC scoring record last night.

He already hold the free throws attempted record at UNC and will claim the rebounding mark as well if he stays healthy.

"Your story on J.J. Redick's and Adam Morrison's difficulty translating their college stardom into pro success left out an important factor. In his senior year Redick shot 229 free throws in the regular season while committing a mere 41 fouls. Morrison had similar numbers. But unfortunately for them, NBA refs don't seem to give a rip about which players the college basketball analysts had man-crushes on. I think you'll be able to reprint this article in a couple of years, just inserting the name Tyler Hansbrough. Jonathan Hamilton, Fenton, Mich."

The best NC Tar Heels ever, and he's white. Not even these caste lovers will ever forget him name in years to come.

I think this kid will be successful in the NBA. Sadly many mock drafts have him going around 20. It doesn't really matter if he gets drafted that low as long as he produces.

Tyler should be picked somewhere in the early to mid lottery, IMO; around 4th-9th if it were fair, but possibly even better depending on how he tests athletically. If he tests as good as Love, which he very well might, he should go around pick 3-6.

Tyler is a beast of a player and is an above average athlete for sure "compared to NBA starting PFs", but he isn't a FREAK for a prospect and is undersized a bit.

But from watching him; Tyler will be a great scorer and all out effort guy in the NBA who will be a tough rebounder. His defense will be SOLID also. He will test out better athletically than the pundits expect. He's a good athlete. The stupid Draft Annalists are saying he should go between pick 15 to EARLY 2ND ROUND...are they nuts?
