Pirates Hit Rock Bottom

I thought I had seen it all in the Pirates attempt to erase the whiteness of their team, but this hits the bottom of the barrel. We now are signing African "players".

The Pirates, trying to mine all areas to get prospects into their minor league system, hope they've found a diamond in the rough in Mpho Ngoepe from South Africa.

Ngoepe, 18, is a switch-hitting shortstop who signed with the Pirates about a month ago, then made a cameo appearance in the Instructional League in Bradenton, Fla.

"We need to find talent wherever it is," general manager Neal Huntington said. "It will be a great story if he makes it to the big leagues."

It also will be historic.

No player from South Africa has played in the major leagues.

"It's going to be a challenge for him," said Jeff Banister, the Pirates' minor league field coordinator who watched Ngoepe in Bradenton. "But he doesn't lack confidence. He's very inquisitive about baseball.

"He has the tools and skills of a young, athletic high school or junior college shortstop. I look forward to working with him in spring training."

Ngoepe, 5 feet 9, 165 pounds, is from Randburg, South Africa -- a suburb of Johannesburg -- and will play for his country in the World Baseball Classic next year. Then he'll report to the Pirates and probably will begin his professional career with Bradenton in the Gulf Coast Rookie League.

"He's an interesting guy," Huntington said. "He made a great impression in Bradenton. He's a good athlete. He has a chance."

Ngoepe's middle name is Gift -- and he would be quite the present for the Pirates if he makes it to the major leagues.

The Pirates sent scouts Tom Randolph and Jack Bowen to Pisa, Italy, in late August to watch Ngoepe in a showcase of European and African talent.

"He just started switch-hitting and he took to it easily. That intrigued me," Bowen said. "He's not polished. He's still learning the game. But he has good hands and good defensive actions. We'll see what happens."

Former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin worked with Ngoepe at an academy supported by Major League Baseball.

"That doesn't surprise me," Banister said. "Players usually take on some of the actions of players they like, and some of [Ngoepe's] actions are the actions Barry had."

"There have been a lot of people who have got me to where I am, but Barry took me up a level at the academy," Ngoepe told The Citizen, a Johannesburg newspaper. "I learned a lot from him and he kept on encouraging me, telling me that people were interested in me."

The Pirates demonstrated they were more than interested.

"It's a great feeling to be signed," Ngoepe said. "I've worked all my life for this. I've always wanted to be a professional baseball player."

In another move, the Pirates declined their $2.6 million 2009 option on outfielder Jason Michaels, 32, who will not get a buyout. Michaels batted .271 last season.

This is the start of a horrible trend for major league baseball. Not enough African-American players? No problem we will just get African players.

From several reports this guy is not even all that talented. So that gives me some hope that he will never make it.

But once they have found a new "breeding ground" for players of color I know they will not stop there.

This just goes to show how hard they are trying to sign anyone BUT white players. Why the rush to all of these other countries when there are tons of good, no great, players right here in America. It is sad.

I am sorry I did not get back to you till now. I got the story from the MLB.com official Pirate team site.
If not mistaken it also ran in some form in all the local Pittsburgh papers.

How many American white players would already be playing in MLB if they didn't allow all these foreign players. If they want latin players, why don't they have a team in the Dominican Republic and only allow carribean players to play there? However, they can't play for teams in the US.If people want to watch Pujols in person, they canmove to the Dominican Republic.

I am sure there are 1000 payers his age in the US as good as Ngoepe.

Let Africa start their own league as well as Europe. Baseball jobs aren't jobs that Americans don't want

Maybe they are copying soccer because there are a ton of African players in Europe now. It's a net loss for the US when African or Latin players come because they have no leagues that a worthwhile to play in for the displaced Americans.

The Pirates signed two more diversity picks, Patel and Singh from India, for crying out loud. Neither has ever played one single game of baseball but who cares. They are players of color AND from another country. That is all it takes, don't you know.Edited by: Skipperron

I was stunned when I saw this news, skipperron.

If they have some cash they want to blow on a couple "raw athletes," they should be able to find plenty of them in the U.S. looking for a chance.

I don't follow baseball ,especially since MLB is like watching the Puerto Rican winter league. So I'm not sure but aren't the Pirates in the midst of one of the worst losing periods in major league history? It's consistent that instead of really looking for MLB quality talent the Pirates are looking for politically correct publicity. I'm sure there's a long waiting list of "brothers" for season's tickets for next year.(sarc).

Yeah, Pirates have tied the longest all time losing streak for any team, any sport. They have had a losing season for the last 16 years. This should really help.

I talk to many fans on the Pirates sites. Incredibly many feel these signings are worth a shot. They feel it is good to try as many countries as they can in hopes of finding new talent, even though it is assumed that neither of these players will ever make it.

If you are losing the way the Pirates are I would not waste time or money on players that I know will not make it.Edited by: Skipperron

Man the Pirates are a sh*t organization. Neither of these Indian guys will ever make it past A ball. I heard one guy may reach the high 80's. Wow, what a joke. I feel sorry for all you guys who are Pirate fans on this site.

Edit- This reminds me of the publicity stunt the St. Louis Browns pulled when they signed midget Eddie Gaedel and gave him one pinch hit at bat in 1951. Its almost that absurd in my opinion.Edited by: Freethinker

Word is that the Pirates offered Jack Wilson to the Dodgers for the Asian shortstop Hu and black OF Delwyn Young. Thank God the Dodgers have turned that one down for the time being.

Man this Pirates team will be all black or foreign in another couple of yearsEdited by: Skipperron
