Age 24 Joey Dawejko is an American heavyweight.

He was matched very hard early on in his pro career and took a few losses, but since then has improved and is currently on an impressive winning streak.

On ESPN2 May 8th, he'll be fighting ex-convict Amir Mansour. The despicable Teddy Atlas will be discrediting and disparaging Joey on that night, as he always does to white boxers (especially Polish and Polish-American boxers).

It would be good to see Dawejko beat the loud-mouthed ex-convict.

I'll be tuning in for this free Friday night fight. What city is Dawejko based out of?

Figured he'd be based in Northeast. I know Chicago has huge Polish population with several Polish and Polish American boxers. Friday night fights featuring a white fighter?! Now that's a shocker.

I must admit, I'd never heard of Dawejko until about a half a year ago and even then I didn't know he was Polish. He has some skills but he's too overweight to be anything more than a fringe contender at this point in time. Hopefully I find a stream this Friday night, my horrible cable package doesn't have ESPN or ESPN2.

Yeah, he hardly looks very trim, especially compared with the guys from the east. If he totally trimmed down and got in top shape he'd probably weight 200 to 210.

I thought the same thing. He looks pretty fat and it's gotta be difficult fighting much bigger/taller heavyweights. He's listed at 5'10 so he may have some success at cruiserweight if he can get down to 200 without losing too much strength. He was stopped by Charles Martin a few years ago who is quite a bit bigger. Nevertheless, I hope he puts a beat down on mansour.

Never underestimate the importance of matchmaking in pro boxing.

Early on in a fighter's career, it's imperative that he is matched somewhat easily, against journeymen and designated "opponents". Even a couple easy opponents are good. This is to build confidence, and help transition to the pro's.

Many boxers who could have been champions were ruined because they were matched too hard early in their careers, lost or were KO'd, and then never recovered . David Reid is a good example of that. Vasyl Lomachenko is also an example of that, he lost to Salido, but the truth is he should have had 15 fights before fighting Salido. By then he would have won that fight easy and still be undefeated. Gabe Rosado another guy who could have turned out better with softer matchmaking.

To be honest, if I was managing someone like Dawejko, I wouldn't take this fight and Id match him easy for another year before taking a fight VS a contender like Mansour.

Weights From Philadelphia:

Amir Mansour 210.5 vs. Joey Dawejko 230.5

He looks like he should be a light heavyweight. At 5'10", he's definitely too small for heavyweight or even cruiserweight.

I dont know. This seems like its got disaster written all over it. You never know though. Lots of chubby White guys are pretty tough sons of guns. Im anxious to see this one because we will lean something about Joey.

There is a huge height and reach disparity for sure. But, Dawejko will bring power and skills into the equation, although on the surface this looks like a mismatch.

However, I used to think the same thing when looking at Big County Nelson, before some of his UFC fights against fitter, taller and darker opponents in which he came out the winner.

I know there's a difference between MMA and Boxing. Yet, power is a big eraser as they say, and I think we will see the same thing here. Victory by K.O. for Dawejko.

I thought the Philadelphia board of boxing or whatever it is ordered Dawenko to cut his beard. If they're allowing beards now and if I was still boxing I'd grow a big mountain man beard and let my curly hair get so long that I'd look like something Vince McMahon could introduce "from parts unknown" and punches would bounce off me!

It's hard to have any faith whatsoever in White American boxers.

They are notorious disappointments and just underwhelming across the board. They never seem to have the confidence, aggressiveness, and mental fortitude to win in tough fights. Maybe throw in Kelly Pavlik as an exception. But really in the last 30 years Pavlik is like the only halfway decent White American boxer. That's pretty pathetic to be honest when you consider how big USA is.

I believe there are cultural, social, and economic reasons for that. White America on the whole is very soft, feminized and of course it's usually blacks who are pushed as athletes. White Americans tend to lack the mentality required in boxing. There is also a lack of boxing infrastructure within the US aimed at whites.

Dawejko is from Philadelphia and was born in USA.

England is much smaller than USA but has pproduced far better in the way of white boxing talent. Froch and Calzaghe are better than any boxers out of USA in the last 30 years.

Canada has just 1/10 the population and Id even say Canada produces as good if not better White boxers than USA. David Lemieux, Steve Molitor, and Arturo Gatton are in my opinion better than any white American boxers in recent times (Pavlik as the only exception). That's sad when you consider USA has 10 X Canada's population.

Ireland has only 3 million people (1/100 of USA'S population) and yet they've managed to today produce better white boxing talent than USA (Fury family, Andy Lee, Nevin, Egan etc).

I think Dawejko loses this fight, likely by KO. He has a size and power disadvantage plus he probably has the lack of mentality I described above.

Hopefully he can prove me wrong though!

At 5,10", Joey will never make much of himself as a heavyweight these days. Worse still, he's not spry and nimble; instead, he's tough, strong, powerful, and simple. Wrong build wrong style wrong man. It would take me 5 years to convert him into an agile Cruiserweight. Not going to happen. He is and always will be a fringe contender for top 20 spot.

He gassed in the past few rounds, the scoring was fair.

Dawejko was ahead 3-2 after 5 rounds on my scorecard, but Mansour swept the last 5 because of Joey's lack of activity.

The idiot trainer Buddy McGirt told Joey he didn't need a KO going into the 10th.

For once Teddy got it right, " Joey blew it." Dawejko stopped fighting after the 5th round. You can't win when you do that (unless your Money Mayweather).
